OBJECTIVE: Adults with hearing loss are at risk of negative impacts of the pandemic. Specific factors, such as hearing loss severity and location of residence, may disproportionately impact patients during the pandemic. The objective of this study was to assess the relative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hearing loss patients, based on hearing device type and location of residence.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional questionnaire study.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Adults with hearing loss.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Data included sociodemographic data, communication

The Bonebridge is an active bone conduction implant (BCI) that is primarily indicated in patients with conductive and combined hearing loss. However, many of these patients present with a radical cavity as a result of previous surgery. In these cases, the implant should not be introduced into the mastoid region, but rather via a retrosigmoid approach to maintain separation from the pathological alteration. To ensure the best possible acoustic transduction, the Bone Conduction-Floating Mass Transducer (BC-FMT) should be positioned near to the cochlea. This requires precise identification of the

Considerable progress has been made in the treatment of hearing loss with auditory implants. However, there are still many implanted patients that experience hearing deficiencies, such as limited speech understanding or vanishing perception with continuous stimulation (i.e., abnormal loudness adaptation). The present study aims to identify specific patterns of cerebral cortex activity involved with such deficiencies. We performed O-15-water positron emission tomography (PET) in patients implanted with electrodes within the cochlea, brainstem, or midbrain to investigate the pattern of cortical

We have distinguished two types of melanocyte within the intermediate layer of the stria vascularis in the cochlea of normally pigmented mice: light and dark intermediate cells. The light intermediate cells are present in the stria from birth and have the typical appearance of a melanocyte. They are large and dendritic with electron-lucent cytoplasm containing numerous vesicles that show tyrosinase activity, and pigment granules in various stages of development. These granules have the ultrastructural and histochemical characteristics of premelanosomes and melanosomes. The light intermediate c

As implantable medical devices become increasingly miniaturized while demanding higher power levels, longer lifetimes, and larger data throughput, conventional powering and communication approaches are reaching their practical limits. Consequently, wireless power and data transfer have emerged as key enabling technologies for next-generation implantable systems. However, designing wireless links that simultaneously satisfy these requirements while remaining compact, efficient, and safe remains a significant challenge. To address this, this paper introduces an exploration and evaluation framewo

OBJECTIVE: Education in microsurgery of the ear includes staged training to allow for mastering of the complex microsurgical procedures, particularly in the context of middle ear reconstruction and cochlear implantation. Traditional surgical training includes temporal bone preparations by cadaver dissection and supervised operating room practice. As these on-site trainings are limited, there is a need to broaden education facilities in an on-line format. Therefore, a first basic on-line training for otosurgery was developed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The system consists of an artificial temporal…

We examined the effect of neonatal deafening on frequency-specific pathways for processing of interaural time differences (ITDs) in cochlear-implant stimuli. Animal studies have demonstrated differences in neural ITD sensitivity in the inferior colliculus (IC) depending on the intracochlear location of intracochlear stimulating electrodes. We used neonatally deafened (ND) rats of both sexes and recorded the responses of single neurons in the IC to electrical stimuli with ITDs delivered to the apical or basal cochlea and compared them with acutely deafened (AD) rats of both sexes with normal he

PURPOSE: Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) are at increased risk for neurocognitive delays, which can have cascading effects on development. Associations between neurocognition and the content of parental language-specifically the use of mental state vocabulary-have been observed in typically hearing (TH) children. This study investigated the role of parental use of mental state language (e.g., vocabulary related to thought processes, desires, and emotions) in explaining variability in neurocognition in children who are D/HH.
METHOD: Dyads of 62 TH and 69 D/HH children who wear

UNLABELLED: A "gold standard" for quantitatively diagnosing inner ear malformations (IEMs) and a consensus on normative measurements are lacking. Reference ranges and cutoff values of inner ear dimensions may add in distinguishing IEM types. This study evaluates the volumes of the cochlea and vestibular system in different types of IEM.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort.
SETTING: Tertiary academic center.
PATIENTS: High-resolution CT scans of 115 temporal bones (70 with IEM; cochlear hypoplasia [CH]; n = 19), incomplete partition (IP) Types I and III (n = 16), IP Type II with an enlarged v

Objective. Established guidelines for safe levels of electrical stimulation for neural prostheses are based on a limited range of the stimulus parameters used clinically. Recent studies have reported particulate platinum (Pt) associated with long-term clinical use of these devices, highlighting the need for more carefully defined safety limits. We previously reported no adverse effects of Pt corrosion products in the cochleae of guinea pigs following 4 weeks of electrical stimulation using charge densities far greater than the published safe limits for cochlear implants. The present study exam

The effects of variables such as duration of hearing aid use and habilitation (duration of intervention) and the number of hearing impaired individuals in family are also considered during the evaluation.
METHODS: Sixty-five parents of children between 24 and 348 months of age (median: 80) participated in this study by returning the completed in The Family Needs Survey. Age at diagnosis of deafness varied from 1 to 84 months of age (median: 16). The duration of hearing aid use wa

BACKGROUND: Direct delivery of drugs and other agents into the inner ear will be important for many emerging therapies, including the treatment of degenerative disorders and guiding regeneration.
METHODS: We have taken a microfluidics/MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) technology approach to develop a fully implantable reciprocating inner-ear drug-delivery system capable of timed and sequenced delivery of agents directly into perilymph of the cochlea. Iterations of the device were tested in guinea pigs to determine the flow characteristics required for safe and effective delivery. For thes

INTRODUCTION: The auditory system helps control voice production, and the present case study illustrates this relationship and reveals how severe to profound post-lingual Hearing Loss (HL) impacts voice quality and dynamics and how uni- and bi-lateral cochlear implantation (CI) improves performance in spontaneous speech. The purpose of this study was to analyse acoustic and auditory perceptual measures of spontaneous speech produced by an adult with HL before CI, after unilateral CI and after bilateral CI.
METHOD: The study is a longitudinal, retrospective case report and explored voice quali…
