Psychosocial correlates of adolescent cannabis use: data from the Italian subsample of the second International Self-Reported Delinquency study.

To provide a comprehensive picture of the whole spectrum of psychosocial factors potentially associated with adolescent cannabis use, bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to assess a variety of social, demographic, psychological, and behavioral correlates of last-month cannabis use and age of first use among 6,838 students. Results showed that only family problems, alcohol and/or other drug use/misuse, deviant behavior, and victimization were independently associated with either recent cannabis use or early onset of cannabis use when multiple, interacting factors were considered. Gambling Behaviors Among Oxford House Residents: A Preliminary Investigation.

The present study investigated the prevalence of gambling behaviors among 71 individuals recovering from substance-dependent disorders and living in self-run recovery homes (Oxford Houses). Residents were given the South Oaks Gambling Screen to assess gambling behaviors and pathological gambling, and 19.7% of the sample was identified as having probable pathological gambling. These residents reported proportionately more involvement in a variety of gambling behaviors than other residents. Engagement in various gambling activities was consistent with previous investigations and suggested that s

Clonidine ameliorates Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is a severe, familial neuropsychiatric disorder of childhood onset that is characterized by multiform motor, phonic, behavioral, and psychological symptoms. Clonidine hydrochloride, a centrally active alpha-adrenergic agonist, was observed to ameliorate the disorder in the majority of 25 patients who could not tolerate or did not benefit from treatment with haloperidol. Clonidine had a gradual onset of action. Compulsive behavior, frustration intolerance, speech difficulties, behavioral blocking, attentional problems, and tics were responsive to treatment. T

Autistic traits in children with comorbid Specific Learning Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: cognitive, behavioral, and teacher-reported predictors.

BACKGROUND: Children with comorbid Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often show elevated autistic traits, yet contributing cognitive and behavioral factors remain underexplored. This study compared cognitive-behavioral profiles of ADHD-only and SLD+ADHD groups and identified key autistic trait predictors using a multi-informant approach. METHODS: The study included 150 children aged 8-12 years, equally divided into ADHD-only and SLD+ADHD groups. Assessments included the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) for autistic traits, the Strengths and

Executive Functioning, Language, and Behavioral Abilities Related to Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Down Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is highly prevalent among individuals with Down syndrome (DS), and the nonphysiological consequences of OSA require examination to inform treatment planning. This study aimed to investigate the association between OSA and aspects of language, executive functioning, behavioral, social abilities, and sleep problems in youth with DS aged 6 to 17 years. METHODS: Multivariate analysis of covariance was used to compare 3 groups adjusted for age, participants with DS with untreated OSA (n = 28), participants with DS without OSA (n = 38), and participants wit

Pulmonary transcriptomic responses indicate a dual role of inflammation in pneumonia development and viral clearance during 2009 pandemic influenza infection.

Increasing incidence of problem gambling has led to prioritizing the problem from the point of view of public health. Additionally, gambling disorder has been recently classified as a behavioral addiction, with implications for both its diagnosis and treatment. However, the shared neural substrate of addictions, to substances and behavioral, is still discussed. Thus, this systematic review aims to provide up-to-date knowledge from the past five years (2017-2022) concerning the neural correlates of gambling related stimuli (cue-reactivity) on the basis of a previous review (Brevers et al., Cogn

Disease-specific quality of life in young patients with tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple tics and is often associated with comorbid behavioral problems. Research with generic instruments in child populations showed that comorbid disorders can have a greater impact on health-related quality of life than tic severity. This study investigated the usefulness of a newly developed disease-specific instrument, the Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome-Quality of Life Scale for Children and Adolescents (GTS-QOL-C&A), in assessing health-related quality of life in young patients with Tourette syndrome with and without be

High and low neurobehavior disinhibition clusters within locales: implications for community efforts to prevent substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of where substance use and other such behavioral problems frequently occur has aided policing, public health, and urba … tory control in locales where youth have high ND on average may reduce youth risk for SUD and other problem behaviors. As demonstrated by the present results, geospatial analysis of youth risk factors, frequently used in community coalition strategies, may be improved with greater statistical and measurement rigor.

Microdeletion/microduplication of proximal 15q11.2 between BP1 and BP2: a susceptibility region for neurological dysfunction including developmental and language delay.

The proximal long arm of chromosome 15 has segmental duplications located at breakpoints BP1-BP5 that mediate the generation of NAHR-related microdeletions and microduplications. The classical Prader-Willi/Angelman syndrome deletion is flanked by either of the proximal BP1 or BP2 breakpoints and the distal BP3 breakpoint. The larger Type I deletions are flanked by BP1 and BP3 in both Prader-Willi and Angelman syndrome subjects. Those with this deletion are reported to have a more severe phenotype than individuals with either Type II deletions (BP2-BP3) or uniparental disomy 15. The BP1-BP2 reg

Resting heart rate and the development of antisocial behavior from age 9 to 14: genetic and environmental influences.

The genetic and environmental basis of a well-replicated association between antisocial behavior (ASB) and resting heart rate was investigated in a longitudinal twin study, based on two measurements between the ages of 9 and 14 years. ASB was defined as a broad continuum of externalizing behavior problems, assessed at each occasion through a composite measure based on parent ratings of trait aggression, delinquent behaviors, and psychopathic traits in their children. Parent ratings of ASB significantly decreased across age from childhood to early adolescence, although latent growth models indi

Clinical and molecular characterization of a patient with a 2q31.2-32.3 deletion identified by array-CGH.

We report on a patient with a de novo interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 2 involving bands 2q31.2-2q32.3. The patient shows severe mental retardation, absence of speech, sleep disturbances, behavioral problems, and some dysmorphic features. In particular, he presents with macrocephaly, high forehead, thick and coarse hair, thick eyebrows, synophrys, increased inner and outer canthal distance, bifid nasal tip, high palate, micrognathia, dysmorphic right ear, and long and tapering fingers. Array-CGH analysis allowed us to identify and characterize a 2q interstitial deletion of a

Self-concept, academic performance and behavioral evaluation of the children of alcoholic parents.

OBJECTIVE: It has been shown that being the child of an alcoholic is a risk factor for the development of alcoholism in adulthood. Due to the suffering caused by living with alcoholic parents, other vulnerabilities appear in such children. Among these are low self-esteem, poor academic performance and behavioral problems. This work aims to comparatively evaluate children of alcoholic parents and children of nonalcoholic parents. METHODS: The study design was quasi-experimental, involving two comparison groups. Two groups of 20 children were selected. The groups consisted of 10- to 12-year-old

Long-term studies of metopic synostosis: frequency of cognitive impairment and behavioral disturbances.

Although the occurrence of cognitive impairment and behavioral disturbances in patients with metopic synostosis has been described, the incidence of this dysfunction has not been established. The records of 36 consecutive children with metopic synostosis followed at one craniofacial center from 1978 to 1993 were reviewed and parental questionnaires were completed to establish the frequency of mental retardation, learning disabilities, and behavioral problems associated with this synostosis. Documentation of syndromes, abnormal karyotype, and central nervous system anomalies also was done. The

Chronic TM disorder and non-TM disorder pain: a comparison of behavioral and psychological characteristics.

The purpose of this paper is to determine whether patients with chronic temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain manifest behavioral, experimental, and psychological characteristics similar to patients with other chronic pain illnesses. The Chronic Pain Battery (CPB), a multidimensional assessment tool for chronic pain patients, was used to compare several important variables between 78 TM disorder (TMD) patients and 98 non-TMD chronic pain patients. The study found that chronic TMD patients had lower "usual" pain intensity and suffering levels, fewer vegetative symptoms associated with depressio

Predictive validity of four factors derived from an 'hyperactivity/MBD' questionnaire.

Two studies were conducted to evaluate the differential predictive validity of four factors--hyperactivity/impulsivity, attention/socialization problems, antisocial behavior, learning problems--derived from Tarter's 'hyperactivity/MBD' questionnaire. One hundred forty five inpatient alcoholic men were evaluated in the first study and 34 first or second year college men in the second study. Our previous research had revealed significant relationships between the total hyperactivity/MBD score and psychopathology (MMPI, Psychopathic State Inventory), alcohol use patterns and consequences/and seve

Overly Regulated Thinking and Autism Revisited.

PROBLEM: Humans exist within a socially mediated dynamical system. Frequent demands are experienced to respond to change in the environment to adapt and flourish. People with autism have impaired behavioral and thinking flexibility and experience high levels of anxiety, as change and adaptation do not come naturally. The disability inherent in autism is by definition the impaired social and occupational functioning that results from lack of adaptation. The point of the behavioral triad of restricted and repetitive interests, activities, and behaviors has received relatively little attention as

Child and family characteristics in multisystemic therapy for child abuse and neglect (MST-CAN): Are there associations with treatment outcome?

Evidence-based indication for targeted interventions is a central approach in the field of child welfare and psychotherapy. This study explored the characteristics of children and families referred to Multisystemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN) in Switzerland and their associations with treatment outcomes. We sought to identify subgroups of children and families referred to MST-CAN and understand their specific needs and alignment with the program. We identified five distinct subgroups of children: (a) those characterized by clinically significant "social withdrawal" and "anxie

Situational social problem-solving skills and self-esteem of aggressive and nonaggressive boys.

This study was designed to assess specific social problem-solving, perceived competence, and self-esteem characteristics of 20 aggressive and 18 nonaggressive boys. Significant behavioral differences existed between the groups. The problem-solving measure provided for qualitative assessment of specific problem solutions that children consider, varying according to the interpersonal context of conflicts with peers, teachers, and parents and to the level of others' intent in conflicts (ambiguous frustration and hostile provocation). In univariate analyses, aggressive children had poorer self-est
