Inherited bone marrow failure syndromes (BMFs) comprise at least one-fourth of children with aplastic anemia, and perhaps up to 10% of adults. The most common syndrome is Fanconi's anemia (FA), with more than 1,000 reported cases. FA is autosomal recessive, with birth defects in approximately 75% of patients. In order to shed light on the mode of HTLV-I infection by mother-to-child transmission, we examined sera of school children in a highly endemic town on two separate occasions at a 6-year interval. Improving respectful maternal and newborn care and quality of care around the time of birth has been identified as a key strategy in low- and middle-income countries for reducing the rates of stillbirths and maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity rates.
