Revealing the unrecognized climate burden of aquaculture systems: A global insight into greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation strategies.

Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing food production sectors and a significant yet underappreciated source of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Using the most comprehensive aquaculture greenhouse gas dataset to-date and robust modeling, we estimated that aquaculture systems globally emitted 63.90 (19.72 - 103.16) Tg CO2-equivalent per year, with methane being the main contributor. Although aquaculture systems account for <2% of the global lentic habitat area, they contribute 8.8% of the total CH4 emissions from these ecosystems. Per unit area, GHG emissions were lower in coastal systems than inlan

Human-induced biospheric carbon sink: Impact from the Taklamakan Afforestation Project.

The Taklamakan Desert, one of the world's largest and driest deserts, has traditionally been considered a biological void. Here, we demonstrate that large-scale ecological restoration is transforming this hyperarid environment into a carbon sink. By analyzing satellite and ground-based data, we find strong seasonal dynamics: During the wet season (Jul to Sep), precipitation increases to 16.3 mm/mo, enhancing vegetation coverage and photosynthetic activity and drawing down atmospheric CO2 by approximately three parts per million (ppm) relative to the dry-season levels. Long-term trends reveal s

Rock weathering can counteract river CO2 emissions induced by permafrost thaw.

Climate-induced permafrost thaw unlocks large stores of organic carbon that are mineralized and emitted as carbon dioxide (CO2) from rivers to the atmosphere1. Concurrently, warming and permafrost thaw can increase mineral weathering rates, thus affecting the release and sequestration of inorganic carbon2-4. Yet how these biological and geological carbon cycles interact and jointly affect CO2 dynamics (emission compared with drawdown) in permafrost rivers remains unknown5. Here we combine CO2 emissions, organic and inorganic solute concentrations, dual carbon isotopes (δ13C-Δ14C) and geochemic

A Systematic Review on the Association Between Water Fluoride Levels and Dental Fluorosis: Exploring the 'Halo Effect' and Confounding Environmental Factors.

Dental fluorosis (DF) remains a global public health challenge traditionally attributed to elevated water fluoride F-. However, the Halo Effect and environmental factors now complicate this dose-response relationship. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, this systematic review identified 20 observational studies (n = 21,780) via PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Inclusion logic utilized the PICOS framework, specifically selecting human studies that reported quantitative water F- levels alongside environmental or dietary confounders. Quality was assessed via the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Synthesis

Elevated water levels drive greenhouse gas mitigation in the riparian zone profile.

Wetlands are critical for climate regulation, with their hyporheic zone serving as sensitive interfaces for groundwater-soil-atmosphere exchange. These zones are active hotspots for carbon-nitrogen cycling and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (CO2, CH4, N2O), yet the impact of water level fluctuations on these emissions and their microbial drivers in freshwater wetlands remains poorly understood. This study investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of GHG emissions and carbon-nitrogen coupling processes along riparian soil profiles of Baiyangdian Lake during water level fluctuations. Employing st

Humidity-dependent viscosity and hygroscopicity after aging with SO2 of biomass burning single nanoparticle.

Although understanding the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles is essential to studying their impact on climate and health, information on the viscosity of nanoparticles composed of organic and inorganic salts, as well as the aging process with soluble polluting gases is still rare. In this work, based on a high contrast imaging device enabled by the photonic chip, we measured the hygroscopic growth factors (GFs) of nanoparticles of KCl and glucose mixed in different organic and inorganic dry mass ratios (OIRs). In addition, we also proposed a viscosity retrieval method to quantify the

GIS-AHP-based land suitability assessment for sustainable agricultural planning on Qeshm Island.

Sustainable agricultural planning necessitates a holistic approach that considers ecological, economic, and social dimensions, balancing agricultural yield with long-term ecological sustainability. In the face of intensifying environmental pressures, such as climate change, land degradation, and biodiversity loss, agriculture must adopt adaptive land use strategies to ensure long-term viability. This paper explores how integrating landscape ecology principles into agricultural planning on Qeshm Island can enhance landscape resilience and efficiency to guide land use strategies that preserve bi

Influence of Derecho and Management Disturbances on Ground-Dwelling Arthropods.

Disturbance events and subsequent management practices significantly shape the ecological legacies of affected sites. This study evaluated the impacts of a 2022 derecho and the subsequent forest management on forest structure and arthropod diversity by comparing affected forests at Fogwell Forest Nature Preserve and Fox Island County Park with control forests at Blue Cast Springs and Hammer Wald Nature Preserves. Arthropod communities were sampled using pitfall traps, while forest structure was assessed through detailed surveys of understory, midstory, and overstory vegetation. Results indicat

Early Detection of Asymptomatic Human Infections in Vector-Borne Diseases: A Programmatic Model for Enhanced Surveillance.

Global control strategies for vector-borne diseases (VBDs) remain largely anchored in the detection and management of symptomatic cases, despite substantial evidence that a considerable proportion of infections-often exceeding 60% in several major arboviral diseases-are asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic. These asymptomatic human reservoirs can sustain low-level pathogen circulation during interepidemic periods and may amplify transmission once ecological, immunological, or entomological thresholds are crossed. Because vector-dependent transmission is shaped by environmental variability, ve

Greenland Emissions Contribute to Black Carbon Aerosols in the Arctic Marine Boundary Layer.

Black carbon (BC) is an important short-lived climate forcer that contributes to Arctic warming, yet observations of BC in the Arctic marine boundary layer remain sparse. Here, we report shipborne measurements of refractory BC (rBC) mass and particle mixing state during a cruise from southeast to west Greenland in May-June 2022. Using a single-particle soot photometer (SP2XR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we characterize both rBC concentrations and individual-particle morphology, representing one of the first ship-based SP2XR data sets in the Arctic marine boundary layer. rBC con

Spatial characteristics and driving factors of human brucellosis and plague infections in the Meriones unguiculatus plague focus in China.

The Meriones unguiculatus plague focus in China constitutes a key zoonotic-disease hotspot where brucellosis and plague co-circulate, posing a syndemic public-health challenge. An integrated spatial risk assessment framework was constructed to systematically contrast the spatial patterns and drivers of the two pathogens and to pinpoint potential interfaces for integrated surveillance. During 2022-2025, 17,289 blood samples were collected from 13,703 individuals. The overall seroprevalence was 19.50% for brucellosis and 0.47% for plague. Spatial analysis revealed pronounced spatial clustering o

Regional place attachment and meat reduction: The role of perceived availability of traditional vegetarian meals and attachment to culinary traditions.

Meat consumption is among the most environmentally impactful human activities. Therefore, reducing meat intake represents a crucial step in addressing climate change. While researchers increasingly recognize that meat consumption is influenced by individual, environmental, and socio-cultural factors, the latter remain underexplored. The present study examined the association between regional place attachment and intentions to reduce meat consumption, focusing on the mediating roles of perceived availability of vegetarian dishes at the regional level and attachment to regional culinary traditio

Matching the green wave: growing season length determines embryonic diapause in roe deer.

The roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is Europe's most widespread ungulate, notable for its unique trait of embryonic diapause (delayed blastocyst implantation after mating) and an ongoing debate regarding how climate change affects its parturition timing. Given the relatively constant timing of the rut, roe deer could cope with advancing greening by adjusting its diapause end. Here, we bridge the gap on factors influencing roe deer's diapause by analysing 390 uteri from legally hunted roe deer females in Germany (2017-2020), which we macroscopically examined for the presence of visible embryonic

The future of paediatric sleep medicine: a blueprint for advancing the field.

Paediatric sleep medicine has rapidly evolved and expanded over the past half century as it became increasingly recognised as a unique field related to but distinct from adult sleep medicine. In looking forward to the next years, the focus of the following discussion is two-fold: to summarise a brief history of the field, recent developments and current trends, and to present a blueprint for the future across various key domains. Using Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory as a model for the interaction between the five interconnected ecosystems and sleep in children, we discuss a variety

Cancer- and non-cancer risk prioritization of regulated mycotoxins in Taiwan: Insights from the 2018-2022 official Mycotoxin monitoring survey.

The prevalence and residue levels of mycotoxins in food have emerged as a global public health concern, exacerbated by climate change. Despite routine monitoring of mycotoxin residues in foodstuffs by health agencies, comprehensive exposure assessments remain limited due to insufficient food consumption data and complex food classification systems. This study employed the Stochastic Human Exposure and Dose Simulation High-Throughput (SHEDS-HT) model, adapted for the Taiwanese population with National Food Consumption Database (NFCD), to estimate aggregate dietary exposure to six major mycotoxi

Centennial-scale atmospheric CO2 rise increased photosynthetic efficiency in a tropical tree species.

Tropical forests substantially influence the terrestrial carbon sink. Their contributions to the forest carbon sink may increase due to the stimulation of photosynthesis by rising atmospheric CO2 (Ca); however, the magnitude of this effect is poorly quantified for tropical canopy trees. We measured the ratio of two deuterium isotopomers of glucose derived from tree rings to estimate how photosynthetic efficiency (photorespiration-to-photosynthesis ratio) has responded to Ca rise at a centennial scale. Wood samples were obtained from Toona ciliata trees from three climatically distinct forests

Heterogeneous variations on historical of mercury, dioxins, and CO2 emissions from medical waste incineration process in China: Emission inventory, driving factors, and the impact of COVID-19.

Medical waste incineration (MWI) is one of the important sources of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), threatening the triple planetary environmental crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution. Utilizing the EMEP/EEA air pollutant emission inventory and the IPCC 2006 guidelines, this study develops a comprehensive inventory of anthropogenic mercury (Hg), dioxins (PCDD/Fs), and CO₂ emissions from the MWI process in China among 2014-2023, employing a bottom-up approach at the plant level. The findings indicate that national MWI emissions of Hg

Room-Temperature CO2 Monitoring Platform Enabled by Alkali Metal Functionalization of a Mg-MOF-74-Based QCM Sensor.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) detection is indispensable for monitoring climate change, ensuring air quality, managing industrial processes, and safeguarding human health. Nevertheless, the chemical inertness and stability of CO2 pose significant challenges in advancing detection technologies in practical applications. In order to overcome these challenges, nanoscale MOF-74 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) functionalized with alkali metals (Li, Na, and K) have been synthesized for the effective detection of the CO2 gas. The sensing results indicate that the Li-Mg-MOF-74-based quartz crystal microbalance

Machine learning-enabled non-targeted metabolomics reveals nutritional and metabolic responses of Brachypodium distachyon to drought and elevated CO2.

Rising atmospheric CO2 and intensified drought are reshaping nutrient dynamics in C3 plants, with implications for ecosystem function and food security. To investigate how these stressors jointly affect nutrient homeostasis, we examined Brachypodium distachyon, a model for C3 cereal grasses, grown under ambient (400 ppm) or elevated (800 ppm) CO2, factorially combined with well-watered or drought treatments. Integrative analyses of physiology, ionomics, transcriptomics, and non-targeted metabolomics revealed that plant elemental composition and metabolomic responses to elevated CO2 strongly de

Strategies to improve photosynthesis by modifying the RuBisCO system and its limitations.

RuBisCO (Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) is the primary enzyme responsible for carbon fixation in the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle, yet it remains one of the most inefficient enzymes in nature. Its slow catalytic rate, low specificity for CO₂ over O₂, and susceptibility to inhibition and heat stress limit photosynthetic efficiency and crop productivity, particularly under fluctuating environmental conditions. This review highlights current strategies to enhance RuBisCO performance. These include direct mutagenesis, ancestral protein reconstruction, and the incorporation of chim
