Deafness is a common and often permanent neurological sequel of Streptococcus (S.) suis meningitis. Suppurative labyrinthitis, rather than direct auditory nerve infection, has been found to be the site responsible for deafness. Neuroimaging is important to localise the site involved in hearing loss and to assess the feasibility of a cochlear implantation. S. suis is very sensitive to penicillin. Although a relapse of S. suis meningitis is uncommon, it can occur despite an adequate duration of appropriate antibiotic therapy. We describe a patient with S. suis meningitis, who developed permanent…

INTRODUCTION: Bone anchored hearing implants (BAHI) are considered for conductive and mixed hearing loss, relying on osseointegration of a titanium implant. Limitations relate to constant skin contact, with resultant percutaneous infections and granulation. This study investigates whether patient characteristics and implant-specifications contribute to BAHIs' skin complications in a cohort with a uniform surgical approach.
METHODS: A 10 year (2014-2024) retrospective cohort study was conducted on BAHI procedures that were undertaken using a tissue-preserving 'punch' technique. Data on patient

This review is based on my 2025 Jepson Lecture and outlines my personal journey to restore hearing in people with a severe sensorineural hearing loss. My dream started as a 5-year-old as I told my kindergarten teacher when I grow up 'I want to fix ears' because my father is deaf. The journey resulted in a career in surgery followed by auditory neuroscience, engineering and audiology. While the key stages in the development of the multi-channel cochlear implant are highlighted, their importance in discovering the first restoration of a human sense, and in understanding brain function is present

Hearing loss is a significant health problem facing the world's population today. Approximately 3 in 1000 children born in the US are found to have hereditary hearing loss. Currently, hearing aids and cochlear implants represent the main treatment options for these patients. The field of gene replacement therapy as a treatment for hereditary hearing loss has advanced rapidly. There are now five ongoing clinical trials using gene replacement therapy to target non-syndromic autosomal recessive hearing loss DFNB9. The preliminary results from these studies are truly exciting. In this review, we s

This report describes a patient whose ability to understand speech had so deteriorated over 20 years time that she was being considered for a cochlear implant, despite the fact that pure-tone sensitivity loss had not deteriorated proportionately. An unusual combination of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and auditory evoked potential (AEP) results are described. Click-evoked and distortion product emissions were present and normal-appearing. Auditory brainstem and middle latency responses were totally absent but the N1-P2 complex of the long-latency response was present. The case illustrates the c

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is a rare and severe autosomal dominant disorder caused by mutations in a tumour suppressor gene. This article reviews NF2 and its treatment with auditory brainstem implantation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The review is based on the authors' experience with the disease and literature identified through a non-systematic search of PubMed.
RESULTS: NF2 is caused by loss-of-normal function of the tumour suppressor protein merlin. Merlin normally suppresses cell growth and proliferation. The clinical picture is dominated by neurological symptoms, caused by mu

OBJECTIVE: Excessive sweating in the head area may cause skin irritation, increased energy consumption, and functional impairment of hearing aids and semi-implantable hearing systems. This study investigated the frequency of sweat-related complaints and evaluated the effectiveness of intracutaneous Botulinumtoxin A (BoNT-A) injections for treating local hyperhidrosis in hearing aid and implant users.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this single-center observational study, 51 users of cochlear implants, active middle ear implants, bone conduction devices, or conventional hearing aids completed a 12-it

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic testing prior to ear surgery is an important part of the work of ear specialists in hospitals. To date, there is no national or international diagnostic standard. Rather, the test batteries used are dependent on hospitals' own doctrinal opinions.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to conduct a survey in German-speaking countries to determine the routine diagnostic methods used prior to various ear surgery procedures.
METHODS: An online questionnaire with 18 general questions on the hospital's equipment and availability of tests and 6 questions on specific ear operati

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) is an important rehabilitation alternative for patients who have conductive or mixed hearing loss. However, these devices use a percutaneous and bone-anchored implant that has some drawbacks reported. A transcutaneous bone conduction implant system (BCI) is proposed as an alternative to the percutaneous system because it leaves the skin intact. The BCI transmits the signal to a permanently implanted transducer with an induction loop system through the intact skin. The aim of this study was to compare the electroacoustic performance of th

Biofilms are structured communities of microorganisms encased in a self-produced extracellular matrix, and they represent one of the most widespread forms of microbial life on Earth. Their presence poses serious challenges in both environmental and clinical settings. In natural and industrial systems, biofilms contribute to water contamination, pipeline corrosion, and biofouling. Clinically, biofilm-associated infections are responsible for approximately 80% of all microbial infections, including endocarditis, osteomyelitis, cystic fibrosis, and chronic sinusitis. A particularly critical conce

The presence of a static magnetic field (Bo), a radiofrequency field (RF), a dynamic gradient which varies in time and loud noises during an MR examination could increase patient risk. Specifically, a magnetic field could interfere with ferromagnetic material leading to one of the following five dangerous interactions: 1) projectile effect, 2) twisting, 3) burning, 4) artefacts and 5) device malfunction. The projectile effect is when an object is attracted by the magnet with the risk, as reported in literature, of hitting the patient, operators and/or the instrument. Objects which typically ca

BACKGROUNDBilateral loss of vestibular (inner ear inertial) sensation causes chronically blurred vision during head movement, postural instability, and increased fall risk. Individuals who fail to compensate despite rehabilitation therapy have no adequate treatment options. Analogous to hearing restoration via cochlear implants, prosthetic electrical stimulation of vestibular nerve branches to encode head motion has garnered interest as a potential treatment, but prior studies in humans have not included continuous long-term stimulation or 3D binocular vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) oculography
