A new restrictive procedure has emerged over the last decade known as the total vertical gastric plication or greater curvature plication (GCP). After our initial experience, the original technique was modified and a new standardized procedure was registered as the Stomach Sparing Gastric Sleeve™ (SSGS). The SSGS reduces the capacity of the stomach by in-folding the greater curvature with containment sutures, creating a sleeve-like stomach. Between March 2012 and August 2015 patients that met the National Institutes of Health (NIH) criteria for gastric banding underwent treatment with the SSGS

BACKGROUND: The management of an appendiceal mass remains controversial with 2 schools of thought; early surgical intervention vs nonoperative management with or without interval appendectomy. The aim is to determine the role and safety of early laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) in children with acute appendicitis presenting with an appendiceal mass.
METHODS: This is a prospective study of 88 consecutive pediatric patients who underwent attempted LA for suspected acute appendicitis at KK Women's and Children's Hospital, Singapore, between May and October 2003.
RESULTS: A total of 88 patients wi

BACKGROUND: Despite an increase in the incidence of kidney failure in Morocco, treatment with transplantation remains limited. Exploring the perspectives of individuals with kidney failure toward kidney transplantation is essential, as it can provide information on previously unknown barriers to care, guide public health efforts, and inform patient-provider conversations. The aim of this study was to identify knowledge, perceptions and willingness to undergo kidney transplantation among individuals with dialysis -dependent kidney failure in southern Morocco. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of large prostatic adenomas can be performed via open, endoscopic, or robotic approaches. A low-profile single-port (SP) robot was built to work in confined areas (ie, the bladder) and regionalize surgery.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the novel SP transvesical (TV) robot-assisted simple prostatectomy (RASP) and report clinical outcomes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: SP TV RASP cases were performed in an academic hospital by two surgeons from 2019 to 2023. A total of 117 cases were performed, and data from patients with at least 12 mo of follow-up were analyzed.

BACKGROUND: Single incision plus one port left-side approach (SILS+1/L) totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (TLDG) is an emerging technique for the treatment of gastric cancer. Reduced port laparoscopic gastrectomy has a number of potential advantages for patients compared with conventional laparoscopic gastrectomy: relieving postoperative pain, shortening hospital stay and offering a better cosmetic outcome. Nevertheless, there are no previous reports on the use of SILS+1/L TLDG with uncut Roux-en-Y (uncut R-Y) reconstruction.
AIM: To investigate the initial feasibility of SILS+1/L TLDG

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), laparoscopic cyst decortication (LCD) has been proposed as a means to relieve chronic cyst-related pain. We present our 7-year experience with LCD for ADPKD with regard to pain relief, hypertension, and renal function.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between August 1994 and February 2001, 29 ADPKD patients with chronic pain (N=29), hypertension (N=21), and renal insufficiency (N=10) underwent 35 LCD procedures. Every detectable cyst within 2 mm of the renal surface was treated. Pain relief was assessed using

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer has the highest mortality rate of all gynaecological malignancies with an overall five-year survival rate of 30% to 40%. In the past two decades it has become apparent and more commonly accepted that a majority of ovarian cancers originate in the fallopian tube epithelium and not from the ovary itself. This paradigm shift introduced new possibilities for ovarian cancer prevention. Salpingectomy during a hysterectomy for benign gynaecological indications (also known as opportunistic salpingectomy) might reduce the overall incidence of ovarian cancer. Aside from effica

OBJECTIVE: Repeat coronary artery bypass surgery has increased risks compared with the first operation, including low cardiac output and injury to patent grafts. The left thoracotomy approach has been advocated specifically in patients with intact grafts of the left internal mammary artery (LIMA) to the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) needing lateral wall grafting. We have evaluated this technique in conjunction with an off-pump procedure in all patients.
METHODS: There were 55 patients over an 8-year period, and 6 (10.9%) were female. The mean age was 63.2 years (range, 41-82

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery through a small transverse sternotomy is a new promising technique that can be considered an alternative in most cases to aortic valve replacement thus reducing surgical trauma and subsequent time of hospitalization. The need to avoid the risks associated with femoro-femoral bypass has lead to the interest in aortic valve replacement (AVR) operations without femoral vessels cannulation. We want to emphasize a few important points of our technique, which differs somewhat from the one applied by Cosgrove and associates.
OBJECTIVE: This study deta

BACKGROUND: The procedure of choice for the resection of ampullary tumors comprises transduodenal ampullectomy (TDA), endoscopic papillectomy (EP), and pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD).1 For neoplasms with low-grade dysplasia, TDA and EP have equivalent efficacies and lower morbidities than PD1. Compared with EP, also as an organ-preserving procedure, TDA could be applicable for tumors involving the pancreatic ducts or common bile ducts.2 Because TDA has a lower incidence of postoperative gastrointestinal bleeding and a higher R0 resection rate, its use could avoid the need to use multiple endosco

BACKGROUND: Protrusio acetabuli is a rare anatomic pattern of the hip in which the femoral head protrudes into the true pelvis. The increased depth of the hip and the excessive size of the lunate surface typically lead to severe pincer-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI); however, to our knowledge, there are no published mid- or long-term studies on results of circumferential acetabular rim trimming through a surgical hip dislocation for patients with this condition.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What is the 10-year survivorship of the hips treated with circumferential rim trimming through a su

BACKGROUND: The common approach of Lymph node dissection (LND) during laparoscopic radical cholecystectomy (LRC) is an anterior approach [1,2], which emulates the view of open surgery. However, isolating the post-pancreatic nodes and retro-portal nodes completely without any damage to neighboring organs can be difficult in laparoscopic surgery because the dorsal structures of hepatoduodenal ligament are embedded and it is difficult for a surgeon to expose them [3]. On the other hand, the lateral approach offers the better way to expose and dissect dorsal part of hepatoduodenal ligament and it

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel, minimally invasive technique for performing myomectomy, a fertility-sparing procedure.
DESIGN: This technique was developed based on similar techniques for other surgeries that showed a benefit. Liu et al. (1) described vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES) for myomectomy, in which a 6-cm myoma was resected transvaginally. An anterior colpotomy was made, and single-site surgical skills were used to perform the entire myomectomy without an abdominal incision and with minimal blood loss (1). Another study showed that this technique was

BACKGROUND: Coral reef aorta (CRA) is defined by the presence of heavily calcified exophytic plaques that protrude into the aortic lumen. However, the exact causes and development of this condition are still not fully understood. When the aortic branches are affected, it can result in various symptoms. Despite ongoing research, there is currently no established consensus on the best treatment for CRA. This review aims to examine the latest findings regarding the clinical presentation and approach to treating patients with CRA.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic electronic search of the litera

Introduction Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is traditionally performed under general anesthesia (GA). However, thoracic segmental spinal anesthesia (TSSA), where low doses of local anesthetics (LA), often with adjuvants, are used at thoracic spinal levels, is also being explored by some researchers. Shoulder pain is a common issue during LC, adversely impacting the patient's perioperative experience. A combination of hypobaric and isobaric LA at the thoracic level has been described to mitigate this complication. The primary objective of the study was to compare the efficacy of a combinatio

IntroductionThe great saphenous vein (GSV) is the preferred conduit for infrainguinal arterial bypass procedures, due to its long-term patency and resistance to infection. However, traditional harvesting methods, including open vein harvesting (OVH) with continuous or skip incisions, pose significant risks of wound complications, with reported rates as high as 40%. To address these issues, minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH) have emerged, promising reduced complications while maintaining graft integrity. This comprehensive review synthesises the current liter

BACKGROUND: Keyhole neurosurgery is the notion of safely removing brain and skull base lesions through smaller and more precise openings that lessen collateral damage to the surrounding scalp, brain, blood vessels, and nerves. The traditional frontal and pterional approaches require large craniotomies and this predisposes patients to significant and avoidable morbidity. With the growing expectation for minimally invasive surgery, we present our experience with the supraorbital keyhole craniotomy for surgical lesions in the anterior cranial fossa and parasellar regions.
METHODS: We retrospecti
