Life-History Traits of Spodoptera frugiperda Populations Exposed to Low-Dose Bt Maize.

Exposure to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins in low- and moderate-dose transgenic crops may induce sublethal effects and increase the rate of Bt resistance evolution, potentially compromising control efficacy against target pests. We tested this hypothesis using the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda, a major polyphagous lepidopteran pest relatively tolerant to Bt notorious for evolving field-relevant resistance to single-gene Bt maize. Late-instar larvae were collected from Bt Cry1Ab and non-Bt maize fields in five locations in Brazil, and their offspring was compared for survival, develop

Basal serum tryptase is not a risk factor for immediate-type drug hypersensitivity during childhood.

BACKGROUND: High serum basal tryptase (sBT) levels have been identified as a risk factor for both venom- and food-induced severe allergic reactions. The aim of this study was to compare sBT levels in children with different severity of actual drug hypersensitivity reactions (DHRs) with those of age- and sex-matched controls without any history of DHRs. METHOD: Patients between 0 and 18 years of age with a history of immediate-type DHRs manifested in 0-6 h after the culprit drug intake were included. Following ENDA (European Network for Drug Allergy) inquiries, patients were evaluated with ski

Evaluation of the Protective Effect of n-Hexane Oil Extract of Black Soldier Fly Larvae on Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Signaling Pathway Alterations in Acrylamide-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats.

BACKGROUND: The liver, the body's central organ for metabolism and detoxification, is continually exposed to environmental and dietary toxins such as acrylamide (ACR). ACR is commonly found in roasted and fried foods. Strong scientific evidence indicates that ACR exposure causes serious liver injury. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are an environmentally friendly insect, and their extract is rich in valuable bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of the n-hexane extract of black soldier fly larvae against oxidative s

Eilat virus (EILV) causes superinfection exclusion against West Nile virus (WNV) in a strain-specific manner in Culex tarsalis mosquitoes.

West Nile virus (WNV) is the leading cause of mosquito-borne illness in the USA. There are currently no human vaccines or therapies available for WNV, and vector control is the primary strategy used to control WNV transmission. The WNV vector Culex tarsalis is also a competent host for the insect-specific virus (ISV) Eilat virus (EILV). ISVs such as EILV can interact with and cause superinfection exclusion (SIE) against human pathogenic viruses in their shared mosquito host, altering vector competence for these pathogenic viruses. The ability to cause SIE and their host restriction make ISVs a

Eco-epidemiology of vectorial Trypanosoma cruzi transmission in a region of northeast Brazil.

Chagas disease (CD) is a parasitic zoonosis endemic in Brazil. Despite virtual control of Triatoma infestans, the main domesticated vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, vectorial transmission by other triatomine species persists in some rural communities. This study aims to characterize triatomines role in transmitting T. cruzi to dogs and humans in the district of Santo Inácio, located in the northwest region of the state of Bahia, Brazil. It also describes environmental factors in housings associated with insect occurrence and assesses the perception, knowledge, and preventive practices adopted by t

To assess whether addition of pyriproxyfen to long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets increases their durability compared to standard long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of pyrethroid-treated bednets for malaria control in sub-Saharan Africa is under threat because of high levels of resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in the vectors. Here we assess the durability of polyethylene nets with a novel combination of permethrin, a pyrethroid, with pyriproxyfen, an insect juvenile mimic (PPF-LLIN), in comparison with a typical permethrin-treated long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN). METHODS: This is a cluster randomised controlled trial of net durability in Burkina Faso, with clustering at the level of the compound and includes entomo

New strategies to combat filariasis.

Two of the major filarial infections, lymphatic filariasis (LF) and onchocerciasis, affect 150 million people, while 1 billion living in endemic areas are at risk of infection. Public health programs to control these infections have successfully existed for years and have evolved from activities driven by the WHO into global programs with public-private partnerships. Currently, these programs use yearly mass application of drugs that mainly kill the larval stages (the microfilariae), with the aim of preventing uptake by the transmitting insect vectors and thus, to block transmission and reduce

Impact of temperature on patient-derived dengue virus breakthrough infections in wMel-infected Aedes aegypti.

The wMel strain of the insect endosymbiont Wolbachia reduces the potential for Aedes aegypti to transmit mosquito-borne viruses such as dengue (DENV). Field trials that have introgressed wMel into Ae. aegypti populations have shown this approach significantly reduces dengue incidence. In a laboratory setting some wMel-Ae. aegypti develop infectious saliva following a viremic blood meal. Additionally, studies have demonstrated that exposing wMel-Ae. aegypti to heat treatment, particularly during the larval stage, reduces wMel density in key tissues such as the ovaries, midgut and salivary gland

Simulation and Prediction of the Potential Distribution of Spodoptera frugiperda Under Current and Three Future Scenarios Based on the Biomod2 Model Under Global Climate Change.

Spodoptera frugiperda is a highly polyphagous pest that poses a serious threat to global agricultural production. Understanding its species distribution is of great importance under the current context of climate change. In this study, we used the biomod2 platform to integrate six models, namely XGBOOST, Maxnet, Maxent, MARS, GBM, and GLM, to construct an ensemble model. This ensemble model was used to simulate the potential distribution of S. frugiperda under current and three future climate scenarios, and to analyze the main environmental factors influencing its distribution and their change

A two-stage OOD-aware approach for mosquito species detection based on RT-DETRv2.

Mosquitoes are important vectors of infectious diseases, and accurate species identification is essential for effective surveillance and control. Traditional image-based identification methods are labor-intensive, while existing deep learning models often exhibit limited generalization in real-world environments due to sensitivity to out-of-distribution (OOD) samples. To address these challenges, this study constructs a real-world mosquito dataset by integrating multiple publicly available sources, comprising 11,514 original images across 33 predefined species. To mitigate class imbalance, dat

Field implementation of the sterile insect technique against Aedes aegypti in Recife, Brazil: operational challenges and impact of release frequency on vector dynamics.

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT) is an environmentally friendly tool for suppressing Aedes aegypti populations. While promising in controlled settings, its application in large urban environments presents logistical and biological challenges. This trial focused on releasing sterile males, sent from a long-distance production facility to suppress the local mosquito population. METHODS: Sterile males of Ae. aegypti were mass-reared, irradiated, and transported 712.2 km from a central facility to Recife, Brazil. Releases were performed once (SIT 1 ×) or twice per week (SIT 2 ×). En

Bombyx mori lipase-1 reduces viral replication and proliferation by inhibiting the expression of the DNA-binding protein (dbp) gene.

Bombyx mori lipase-1 (Bmlipase-1) has strong anti-BmNPV activity, but the mechanism by which Bmlipase-1 resists BmNPV invasion has not been elucidated so far. In this paper, based on the construction of recombinant viruses overexpressing Bmlipase-1, we analyzed the effects of the recombinant viruses on the genes related to recombinant virus replication as well as viral replication and proliferation after the recombinant viruses infected BmN cells. In the presence of the virus, Bmlipase-1 localizes to the cell nucleus. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), northern blotting and western

Spider (Araneae) Abundance and Diversity Across Land-Use Gradients.

In agricultural insect pest control, there has been a movement away from broad-spectrum insecticide use towards more sustainable practises. These include lowering pesticide inputs and reducing the harm on beneficial invertebrates, and keeping a more diverse landscape to allow for a more holistic approach to agriculture. Spiders are the dominant and most abundant invertebrate predators in horticultural growing systems. Despite the known potential of spiders as pest reduction ecosystem service providers, they are generally understudied worldwide. We sampled spider populations in economically imp

Genomic population structure and insecticide resistance mechanisms in the malaria vector An. coluzzii across contrasting bioclimatic zones in West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Environmental barriers influencing the movement of insect vectors can govern adaptive gene flow, including the dispersal of insecticide resistance mechanisms that compromise population control. We sought to understand population connectivity of the major malaria vector, An. coluzzii, across the different bioclimatic zones of West Africa including Ghana, Mali and Côte d’Ivoire using SNPs from whole genomes and inversion karyotypes previously associated with environmental adaptation. METHODS: We used Ghana as a case study to investigate how adaptive alleles are shared across geograph

A Review of Japanese Encephalitis Vaccines with Respect to Potential Veterinary Use.

BACKGROUND: Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a reemerging vector-borne orthoflavivirus of significant public and animal health concern. Infection with JEV can cause inapparent, mild, or fatal encephalitis in humans and animals. The virus, which circulates primarily in Southeast Asia, has caused outbreaks in humans and livestock in nonendemic regions, leading to human disease and significant economic loss. The 2022 Australian outbreak of JEV led to renewed interest in JEV countermeasures available in the United States for veterinary use as the Australia outbreak primarily affected commercia

Optimizing irradiation dose for Drosophila melanogaster males to enhance heterospecific Sterile Insect Technique (h-SIT) against Drosophila suzukii.

The spotted-wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii), a highly invasive agricultural pest, poses significant challenges to fruit production worldwide. Traditional chemical control methods are costly and raise concerns about resistance and environmental sustainability. The Heterospecific Sterile Insect Technique (h-SIT) has emerged as a promising alternative. Sterile heterospecific males (Drosophila melanogaster) can be used to suppress D. suzukii populations through reproductive interference, primarily mediated by post-zygotic isolation mechanisms. Although this approach ensures the absence of via

Transcriptomic comparison analysis across seven developmental stages of the Triatoma rubrofasciata, a vector of Chagas disease.

BACKGROUND: Triatoma rubrofasciata is an obligate hematophagous insect and a primary vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease, with a widespread global distribution. In addition to Try. cruzi, T. rubrofasciata also serves as a vector for various other pathogens, including Try. lewisi, Try. conorhini, and Bartonella species. Despite its increasing epidemiological relevance in the transmission of multiple diseases, research on T. rubrofasciata remains limited. RESULTS: Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were associated with growth, development, carbohydrate metabo
