Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT) is a rare but serious cerebrovascular disorder affecting children from the newborn period through childhood and adolescence. The incidence is estimated at 0.6/100,000/year, with 30-50% occurring in newborns. Causes are diverse and are highly age dependent. Acute systemic illness is the dominant risk factor among newborns. Amyloidosis of the external auditory canal is extremely rare. Only 12 cases, including the present case, have been reported, and this is the second reported case attributed to dialysis. This case involved a 56-year-old man who had been on dialysis for 12years. A tumor was visible in the right external auditory canal and caused pain. The tumor was resected at another hospital, but subsequently recurred with rapid increase in size due to infection. We therefore performed further resection at our hospital. We report our experiences herein, together with a discussion of the literature.

Positive surgical indications for an only hearing ear were evaluated in order to improve patients' quality of life. Fifteen cases of surgery involving an only hearing ear over the past eight years were retrospectively reviewed. Of eight perforated chronic otitis media cases, seven underwent type one tympanoplasty and one underwent simple underlay myringoplasty regardless of otorrhoea at the time of surgery.
