OBJECTIVE: Premature adrenarche (PA), characterised by pre-pubertal adrenal androgen excess and hyperandrogenic symptoms, is considered a forerunner of polycystic ovary syndrome, which comes with increased metabolic risk. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Isolated premature menarche is isolated or recurrent vaginal bleeding in a female in the absence of appropriate secondary sexual characters.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients with premature menarche, followed by a telephone questionnaire. Charts of patients evaluated in the Pediatric Endocrine Clinic for premature vaginal bleeding from 1982-2013 were reviewed.

Premature pubarche is defined as growth of pubic hair before the age of 8 years in girls and 9 years in boys. In most cases, it is caused by premature adrenarche, which is a premature increased synthesis of androgens in the adrenal gland and is considered to be relatively harmless. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether, in girls with early onset of puberty, low birth weight is a risk factor for rapid progression to menarche and for short adult stature.
DESIGN: Longitudinal clinical assessment of 54 Catalan (Northern Spanish) girls followed from early onset of puberty (onset of breast development between 8.0 and 9.0 years of age) to final height. The timing of menarche and the final height were analyzed a posteriori according to birth weight, the cutoff level between normal and low birth weight subgroups being -1.5 standard deviation (SD; approximately 2.7 kg at term birth).

We report a newborn female with neonatal hyperthyroidism, born to a mother with Graves disease treated with potassium iodide and carbimazole. At four months she had some breast development, a bone age advance of one year, and elevated levels of FSH and estradiol. Later on the prolactin level was also raised, while LH and TSH values continued low. Posteriorly, irregular cutaneous pigmentation, brown in colour, was evident on the neck and trunk, and a McCune-Albright syndrome was suspected. The relationship between these conditions and treatment of them is discussed.
