Superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome results from impaired venous return to the right atrium. While malignancy is the most common cause, benign etiologies such as mediastinal fibrosis are increasingly recognized. Endovascular therapy is considered the first-line treatment due to its high technical success and rapid symptom relief. We report the case of a 47-year-old woman with tuberculosis-related mediastinal fibrosis presenting with progressive SVC syndrome. She underwent uncomplicated endovascular stenting of the SVC using an uncovered stent. Twelve hours after the procedure, the patient develo

Several historical studies reported a higher rate of complications following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in women compared with men, especially major bleeding, vascular complications and stroke. More recent publications have demonstrated lower stroke rates following TAVR. The growing experience of modern TAVR operators played a crucial role in the reduction of early postprocedural stroke events. In addition, the improved transcatheter heart valve technology, the emphasis on a heart team-based selection process, and the inclusion of intermediate- and low-risk patients in the l

RATIONALE: Angioleiomyoma (ALM) is a rare benign tumor originating from smooth muscle tissue, and its occurrence in the oral cavity is extremely uncommon. Although a few cases involving the upper lip have been reported, most lesions are exophytic or superficially located. Here, we report an unusual solid, submucosal ALM in the upper lip, highlighting its distinctive clinical, imaging, and histopathological features.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 43-year-old male presented with a firm, painless swelling in the upper lip that had gradually enlarged over the past 8 months. The lesion measured 4.0 × 2.0 cm

Background and Objectives: Cardiovascular diseases are prevalent entities, especially in emergency patients. Arterial stiffness is a known predictor of cardiovascular risk and mortality and is quantified by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV). It is caused in part by vascular calcification, but exact details of the underlying mechanisms are yet to be elucidated, and current data suggest endocrine influences. This study thus aimed to assess the associations of endocrine parameters, particularly thyroid and parathyroid hormones, calcium, inorganic phosphate, and vitamin D, with cfPWV as …

Sturge-Weber syndrome is a rare congenital disorder with vascular malformations affecting the brain, skin, and eyes. Type 3 Sturge-Weber syndrome, the rarest form, presents with isolated leptomeningeal angiomas, often causing diagnostic delays. This report highlights an unusual presentation where both recurrent focal seizures and migraine-like headaches were prominent, long-standing features. A 30-year-old man presented with two focal seizures affecting the right side of his body, preceded by aura and followed by postictal confusion, right-sided weakness, and migraine-like headache with photop

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (PEH) is a rare vascular tumour, and its early diagnosis remains challenging. This study aims to comprehensively analyse the imaging features of PEH and develop a model for predicting PEH.
METHODS: Retrospective and pooled analyses of imaging findings were performed in PEH patients at our center (n=25) and in published cases (n=71), respectively. Relevant computed tomography (CT) images were extracted and used to build a deep learning model for PEH identification and differentiation from other diseases.
RESULTS: In this study, bilateral

Breast hemangiomas are rare benign vascular lesions. In a previously performed review of approximately 10,000 breast surgical pathology results, roughly 0.15% (15/~10 000) were hemangiomas. Hemangiomas are more frequent in women and have a documented age distribution of 1.5 to 82 years. They are most often subcutaneous or subdermal and anterior to the anterior mammary fascia but may rarely be seen in the pectoralis muscles or chest wall. On imaging, breast hemangiomas typically present as oval or round masses, often measuring less than 2.5 cm, with circumscribed or mostly circumscribed, focall

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory disorder. It is associated with increased risk of developing other chronic health diseases such cardiovascular disorders. Fetuin A is a glycoprotein that is present in blood serum. It may prevent vascular calcification by forming calciprotien particles; which are formed from their attachment with phosphate and calcium complexes.
AIM: The aim of this study was to measure serum Fetuin A in Psoriatic patients and correlate its level with cardiac events and risks in these patients using CT calcium (Ca) scoring.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 24 psoriatic p…

Breast density (BD) and breast arterial calcifications (BAC) can expand the role of mammography. In premenopause, BD is related to body fat composition: breast adipose tissue and total volume are potential indicators of fat storage in visceral depots, associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Women with fatty breast have an increased likelihood of hypercholesterolemia. Women without cardiometabolic diseases with higher BD have a lower risk of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chest pain, and peripheral vascular disease, while those with lower BD are at increased risk of cardi

We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of orbital ultrasound in the etiologic diagnosis of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). For this purpose, patients with CRAO evaluated at our center between 2011 and 2021 were reviewed. Demographic variables, vascular risk factors and ultrasound findings were collected. An orbital duplex was performed in all cases and complemented with other diagnostic explorations. We attended 36 cases of CRAO. In all patients, orbital ultrasound confirmed the diagnosis of CRAO: in 75% emboli material (spot sign) was observed in CRA and in 25% flow alteration in

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a commonly encountered malignancy, accounting for approximately 20% of new breast cancer diagnoses in the United States. DCIS is characterized by a proliferation of tumor cells within the terminal duct lobular unit with preservation of the basement membrane. Typically nonpalpable and asymptomatic, DCIS is most often detected as calcifications on screening mammography. However, DCIS may also be noncalcified. When compared to calcified DCIS, noncalcified DCIS is more likely to be symptomatic, with patients most often presenting with nipple discharge or a palpab

Breast cancer is a common gynecological disease, and its incidence and mortality are higher than those of other common malignant tumors. Breast ultrasound technology is a new surgical method, which has the advantages of reducing postoperative complications, improving the quality of life of patients, and improving the prognosis of patients. Breast microcalcification is a new method for the treatment of tumors. Its mechanism is that the proliferation of breast cancer cell walls increases the inflammatory factors in the cancer tissues and enhances the formation of tumors and peripheral vascular t

Macrophages represent a cell type that has been widely described in the context of atherosclerosis since the earliest studies in the 17th century. Their role has long been considered to be preponderant in the onset and aggravation of atherosclerosis, in particular by participating in the establishment of a chronic inflammatory state by the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and by uncontrolled engorgement of lipids resulting in the formation of foam cells and later of the necrotic core. However, recent evidence from mouse models using an elegant technique of tracing vascular smooth muscle c

Hydatid disease (HD), also known as echinococcal disease or echinococcosis, is a worldwide zoonosis with a wide geographic distribution. It can be found in almost all parts of the body and usually remains silent for a long period of time. Clinical history can be varied based on the location, size, host immune response, and complications. The most common imaging modalities used for diagnosis and further evaluations of HD are ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although conventional radiography may be the first used tool, rarely can lead to a definite judg

BACKGROUND: Pathologic examination of conduction system (CS) is not routinely performed, and histologic changes are mostly reported in forensic practice.
METHODS: We studied the value of dissecting the CS in a cohort of pediatric patients with unexplained sudden death or severe, inexplicable arrhythmias. Histopathologic changes present in CS components were recorded and correlated with findings noted in other cardiac structures.
RESULTS: Twenty-one subjects (11 unexplained sudden deaths and 10 life-threatening arrhythmias) were identified; 18 (86%) had CS pathologic abnormalities. In 13 pati

In children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), optimal control of bone and mineral homeostasis is essential, not only for the prevention of debilitating skeletal complications and achieving adequate growth but also for preventing vascular calcification and cardiovascular disease. Complications of mineral bone disease (MBD) are common and contribute to the high morbidity and mortality seen in children with CKD. Although several studies describe the prevalence of abnormal calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone, and vitamin D levels as well as associated clinical and radiological complications a…

Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is an intractable avian bone disease that causes severe poultry economic losses. The pathogenicity of TD is unknown. Therefore, TD disease has not been evacuated yet. Based on continuous research findings, we have gone through the molecular and cellular insight into the TD and proposed possible pathogenicity for future studies. Immunity and angiogenesis-related genes expressed in the erythrocytes of chicken, influenced the apoptosis of chicken chondrocytes to cause TD. TD could be defined as the irregular, unmineralized and un-vascularized mass of cartilage, which

Fibrosing mediastinitis is a rare benign but potentially life-threatening process that occurs because of proliferation of fibrotic tissue in the mediastinum. The focal subtype is more common and typically is associated with an abnormal immunologic response to Histoplasma capsulatum infection. Affected patients are typically young at presentation, but a wide age range has been reported, without a predilection for either sex. The diffuse form may be idiopathic or associated with autoimmunity, usually affects middle-aged and/or elderly patients, and is more common in men. For both subtypes, patie
