Recovering nutrients and unblocking the cake layer of an electrochemical anaerobic membrane bioreactor.

The sustainable development strategy shifts water treatment from pollution removal to resource recovery. Here, an electrochemical resource-recovery anaerobic membrane bioreactor (eRAnMBR) that employed a magnesium plate and conductive membrane as dual anodes is presented and shows excellent performance in carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus recovery, as well as 95% membrane anti-fouling. The Mg2+ released alters the physicochemical properties of sludge, unblocking the cake layer, and recovers ammonium and phosphate, yielding 60.64% purity and 0.08 g d-1 struvite deposited onto cathode to be separ

A retrospective longitudinal study of adenovirus group F, norovirus GI and GII, rotavirus, and enterovirus nucleic acids in wastewater solids at two wastewater treatment plants: solid-liquid partitioning and relation to clinical testing data.

Enteric infections are important causes of morbidity and mortality, yet clinical surveillance is limited. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has been used to study community circulation of individual enteric viruses and panels of respiratory diseases, but there is limited work studying the concurrent circulation of a suite of important enteric viruses. A retrospective WBE study was carried out at two wastewater treatment plants located in California, United States. Using digital droplet polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we measured concentrations of human adenovirus group F, enteroviruses, nor

Ciprofloxacin- and azithromycin-resistant bacteria in a wastewater treatment plant.

The occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has become an occupational and environmental concern. WWTPs are engineered systems that treat wastewater to meet public health standards before release into the environment. The residuals, as either effluent or solids, are then discharged or beneficially recycled into the environment. Since these wastes contain a diverse array of microorganisms, some of which are resistant to commonly used antibiotics, there is a potential for these organisms to spread in the environment via residual recycling and effl

Clinically Relevant β-Lactam Resistance Genes in Wastewater Treatment Plants.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the largest global concerns due to its influence in multiple areas, which is consistent with One Health's concept of close interconnections between people, animals, plants, and their shared environments. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) circulate constantly in various niches, sediments, water sources, soil, and wastes of the animal and plant sectors, and is linked to human activities. Sewage of different origins gets to the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), where ARB and ARG removal efficiency is still insuff

A high prevalence of blaOXA-48 in Klebsiella (Raoultella) ornithinolytica and related species in hospital wastewater in South West England.

Klebsiella species occupy a wide range of environmental and animal niches, and occasionally cause opportunistic infections that are resistant to multiple antibiotics. In particular, Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kpne) has gained notoriety as a major nosocomial pathogen, due principally to the rise in non-susceptibility to carbapenems and other beta-lactam antibiotics. Whilst it has been proposed that the urban water cycle facilitates transmission of pathogens between clinical settings and the environment, the level of risk posed by resistant Klebsiella strains in hospital wastewater remains unclear.

Metagenomic insights into dissemination of antibiotic resistance across bacterial genera in wastewater treatment.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impacts of conventional wastewater treatment processes including secondary treatment and chlorination on the removal of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), and to assess the association of ARGs with their potential hosts in each treatment process. The results showed chlorination with subinhibitory concentration (<8 mg/L) resulted in an increased ARB number in the disinfection effluent. qPCR analysis indicated secondary treatment increased relative abundance of ARGs in remaining bacteria whereas disinfection reduc

[Distribution and Removal of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Petrochemical Wastewater Treatment Plants].

A petrochemical wastewater treatment plant (PWWTP) was selected to investigate the distribution and removal of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and three forms of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), namely intracellular ARGs (iARGs), adsorbed-extracellular ARGs (aeARGs), and free extracellular ARGs (feARGs). Tetracycline, sulfanilamide, and ampicillin ARB were detected with the total absolute concentration of 8.45×102-2.38×105 CFU·mL-1; the absolute concentrations of three types of ARB decreased by 0.04 lg-0.21 lg through anaerobic treatment. The effect of aeration and precipitation treatme

Diversity and functional annotation of microorganisms in French vertical flow constructed wetland treating greywater.

Constructed wetlands form a unique ecosystem having plants, soil, microbes in which microorganisms play a vital role in the transformation and degradation of pollutants from wastewater. In the present study, French type two-stage vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) was used for the treatment of single household greywater (GW). Pilot-scale VFCW having sand and gravel as the filter substrate was constructed with Canna indica plantation for treating GW. To understand the pollutant removal mechanism in VFCW, microbial diversity and functional annotation was carried out by metagenomics analysi

Comparison of two starch-based flocculants with polyacrylamide for the simultaneous removal of phosphorus and turbidity from simulated and actual wastewater samples in combination with FeCl3.

Two laboratory-made cationic starch-based flocculants (St-CTA and St-AD) with different chain architectures were used to simultaneously remove phosphorus and turbidity from two simulated wastewaters and one actual wastewater with laboratory and pilot scales, respectively, in conjunction with FeCl3. A commercial polyacrylamide (PAM) has been also tried and compared with aforementioned starch-based flocculants. The removal extents of phosphorus and turbidity increased, the required dosages of FeCl3 decreased, and floc properties improved after dosing each polymeric flocculant after FeCl3 in all

Chlorine disinfection increases both intracellular and extracellular antibiotic resistance genes in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant.

The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance has posed a major threat to both human health and environmental ecosystem. Although the disinfection has been proved to be efficient to control the occurrence of pathogens, little effort is dedicated to revealing potential impacts of disinfection on transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), particularly for free-living ARGs in final disinfected effluent of urban wastewater treatment plants (UWWTP). Here, we investigated the effects of chlorine disinfection on the occurrence and concentration of both extracellular ARGs (eARGs) and intr

Effect of particulate organic substrate on aerobic granulation and operating conditions of sequencing batch reactors.

The formation and application of aerobic granules for the treatment of real wastewaters still remains challenging. The high fraction of particulate organic matter (XS) present in real wastewaters can affect the granulation process. The present study aims at understanding to what extent the presence of XS affects the granule formation and the quality of the treated effluent. A second objective was to evaluate how the operating conditions of an aerobic granular sludge (AGS) reactor must be adapted to overcome the effects of the presence of XS. Two reactors fed with synthetic wastewaters were ope

Electron competition among nitrogen oxides reduction during methanol-utilizing denitrification in wastewater treatment.

Limited availability of carbon sources has been regarded as an important factor leading to N2O accumulation during denitrification in wastewater treatment. By varying the carbon (methanol) loading rate to a methanol utilizing denitrifying culture in the presence of various electron acceptors (nitrate, nitrite, N2O and their combinations), this study quantitatively investigated the electron distribution among different nitrogen oxide reductases during denitrification. The results showed that electron competition occurs under not only carbon limiting but also carbon abundant conditions. The elec

Effect of natural organic matter on toxicity and reactivity of nano-scale zero-valent iron.

Nano-scale zero-valent iron (NZVI) particles are increasingly used to remediate aquifers contaminated with hazardous oxidized pollutants such as trichloroethylene (TCE). However, the high reduction potential of NZVI can result in toxicity to indigenous bacteria and hinder their participation in the cleanup process. Here, we report on the mitigation of the bactericidal activity of NZVI towards gram-negative Escherichia coli and gram-positive Bacillus subtilis in the presence of Suwannee River humic acids (SRHA), which were used as a model for natural organic matter (NOM). B. subtilis was more t

Influence of trace erythromycin and eryhthromycin-H2O on carbon and nutrients removal and on resistance selection in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs).

Three sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were operated in parallel to study the effects of trace erythromycin (ERY) and ERY-H2O on the treatment of a synthetic wastewater. Through monitoring (1) daily effluents and (2) concentrations of nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) in certain batch cycles of the three reactors operated from transient to steady states, the removal of carbon, N, and P was affected negligibly by ERY (100 microg/L) or ERY-H2O (50 microg/L) when compared with the control reactor. However, through analyzing microbial communities of the three steady state SBRs on high-density micro

Assessing the air quality performance of urban garden designs: an integrated ENVI-met modeling and field measurement study in Guelma, Algeria.

Urban air quality degradation, driven by intensified urbanization and traffic, presents a critical public health challenge in most cities worldwide, such as Guelma, Algeria, where concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) and carbon dioxide (CO2) often exceed health standards. This study evaluates the efficacy of conventional greening by suggesting that the air purification potential of public gardens may be limited by suboptimal initial design. It is an exploratory modeling framework to propose a shift from qualitative landscaping to quantitative, performance-driven biophilic de
