Stressors faced by forcibly displaced Ukrainians in England within 6 months of arrival: A qualitative study.

Stressors faced by Ukrainians forcibly displaced by the 2022 Russian invasion is a relatively unexplored area. The aim of this paper is to explore stressors shaping the mental well-being of forcibly displaced Ukrainians in England. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 15 forcibly displaced Ukrainians (within 6 months of arrival) and 6 stakeholders, focusing on life experiences in England and barriers accessing critical services. We drew on the Four Core Stressors Framework to conduct reflexive thematic analysis, focusing on the following sources of stress: trauma, accultu

At the crossroads of race and migration: understanding violence risk and mental health inequities for African and Caribbean black youth in the U.S.

African and Caribbean Black (ACB) immigrant adolescents experience unique constellations of risk factors that increase their vulnerability of both experiencing and initiating violence. Traditional disciplinary and punitive approaches are ineffective at addressing these root causes. Mental health interventions have the potential to reduce and prevent ACB adolescent violence; however, clinicians need culturally-responsive and community-informed strategies for violence prevention and advocacy. To meet this need, this paper employs Critical Race Theory and Intersectional frameworks to examine disp

[Therapeutic approaches for obesity and comorbidities in young immigrants].

The prevalence of overweight and obesity is higher in children and adolescents with a migrational background. However, if the country of origin is taken into account, the picture of these differences becomes more complex and more heterogeneous. Predictors for obesity and the ethnic differences are manifold and can be roughly differentiated into cultural, social and individual causes as well as into causes related to the process of acculturation. There are special problems in the long-term health care of obese adolescents with a migrational background. The most important are (1) treatment delay

Cross-cultural adaptation, reliability, and validity of the German version of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale.

OBJECTIVE: In patients with chronic pain, catastrophizing is a significant determinant of self-rated pain intensity and disability. The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) was developed to assist with both treatment planning and outcome assessment; to date, no German version has been validated. METHODS: A cross-cultural adaptation of the PCS into German was carried out, strictly according to recommended methods. A questionnaire booklet containing the PCS, visual analogue scales (numeric rating scale) for pain intensity and general health, the ZUNG self-rating depression scale, the Modified Somat

Adaptation problems of Vietnamese refugees. II. Life changes and perception of life events.

The Vietnamese refugees have encountered a multitude of acute psychological, social, cultural, economic, and political upheavals. This study documents the Vietnamese perceptions of the life events that have swirled about them as well as the occurrences of these life events. Questionnaires were administered in 1975 and 1976 as part of an ongoing study. The expected high amount of life change in the year of the evacuation and resettlement (1975) continued into the following year (1976). Financial, life-style, work, spouse, and schooling problems continued to plague them and were increased in the

A Qualitative Case Study on Influencing Factors of Parents' Child Abuse of North Korean Refugees in South Korea.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influencing factors of parental child abuse by North Korean refugees who are living in South Korea. In-depth interviews were conducted with five parents who escaped from North Korea. The study identified three categories of factors impacting child abuse: the weakening of family functions from past experiences before and after defection, the stress of adapting to the culture of an unfamiliar society, and low parenting self-efficacy. North Korean parents suffered from emotional and functional crises from past traumatic events and, at the same time,

Caring for Refugee Youth in the School Setting.

Annually, over 80,000 refugees enter the United States as a result of political or religious persecution. Of these, approximately 35% to 40% are children and adolescents. Refugees are faced with challenges associated with living conditions, cultural and social norms, and socioeconomic status due to problems occurring in their homelands. These challenges include but are not limited to malnutrition, communicable disease, questionable immunization status, lack of formal education, sexual abuse, violence, torture, human trafficking, homelessness, poverty, and a lack of access to health care. Urgent opportunistic observations: the study of changing, transient and disappearing phenomena of medical interest in disrupted primitive human communities.

Two newly identified foci of usually rare disease occurring in high incidence in isolated primitive populations of West New Guinea are discussed as examples of medical problems that demand immediate intensive investigation because the unique naturally occurring experiments they represent are soon likely to be altered. These are: (1) amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinsonism, and dementia syndromes in a small population of Auyu and Jakai peoples in the Lowlands, and (2) an epidemic of burns from cysticercosis epilepsy from newly introduced Taenia solium in pigs in the Ekari people of the Wiss

Reparations for Indigenous Peoples in the USA and Canada.

Indigenous populations comprise some 400 million people worldwide, hailing from 5,000 descent communities. Although contemporary Indigenous Peoples are exceedingly diverse, they frequently share brutal histories of colonization. These histories of subjugation by outsiders have yielded catastrophic impacts on Indigenous health and well-being, including marked inequities in health status. Specifically, Indigenous communities often suffer from disproportionately high rates of infant and maternal mortality, infectious diseases, parasite loads, diseases of forced acculturation (such as diabetes and

Help Wanted: Mental Health and Social Stressors Among Latino Day Laborers.

Latino day laborers may be especially vulnerable to poor mental health due to stressful life experiences, yet few studies have described patterns of mental health outcomes and their correlates in this population. Patterns of depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7), and associations with demographic characteristics, social stressors, and substance use in a recruited sample of male Latino day laborers ( n = 101) are described. High rates of depression and anxiety were identified. Specifically, 39% screened positive for moderate or severe depression and 25% for moderate or severe anxiety. Higher l

Factors contributing to infant overfeeding in low-income immigrant Latina mothers.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 10% of U.S. infants and toddlers are considered overweight. Hispanic infants persistently show higher prevalence rates for being overweight compared to other infants. Little is known about factors promoting excessive infant weight gain in Latinos. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe multidimensional factors and maternal feeding practices that may correlate with infant overfeeding in Latina mothers. METHODS: Participants were 62 low-income immigrant Latina mothers and their infants. Study measures were: acculturation; maternal feeding beliefs and practices

Methamphetamine and cocaine use among Mexican migrants in California: the California-Mexico Epidemiological Surveillance Pilot.

Methamphetamine and cocaine use have been associated with a vulnerability to HIV infection among men who have sex with men and among men who have sex with women but not specifically among Mexican migrants in the United States. The California-Mexico Epidemiological Surveillance Pilot was a venue-based targeted survey of male and female Mexican migrants living in rural and urban areas in California. Among men (n = 985), the percentage of methamphetamine/cocaine use in the past year was 21% overall, 20% in male work venues, 19% in community venues, and 25% in high-risk behavior venues. HIV risk behaviors among Mahuwahine (native Hawaiian transgender women).

This study explored HIV risk behaviors among Hawaiian and Polynesian- identified transgender women living in Hawai'i. The term transgender encompasses the experience of individuals who violate rigid binomial Western gender roles (Bockting, Robinson, & Rosser, 1998; Lombardi, Wilchins, Priesing, & Malouf, 2001; Yep & Pietri, 1999, pp. 199-200). Although traditional Polynesian cultures tolerate more gender role variations than Western culture, postcolonial acculturation has resulted in notable stigma for transgender individuals in Hawaiì today (Kameèleihiwa, 1999; Kanuha, 2000). Mahu is a cross-
