Powered ankle prostheses have been designed to reduce the energetic burden that individuals with transtibial amputation experience during ambulation. There is an open question regarding how much power the prosthesis should provide, and whether approximating biological ankle kinetics is optimal to reduce the metabolic cost of users. We tested 10 individuals with transtibial amputation walking on a treadmill wearing the BiOM powered ankle prosthesis programmed with 6 different power settings (0-100%), including a prosthetist-chosen setting, chosen to approximate biological ankle kinetics. We mea

Current upper limb prostheses aim to enhance user independence in daily activities by incorporating basic motor functions. However, they fall short of replicating the natural movement and interaction capabilities of the human arm. In contrast, human limbs leverage intrinsic compliance and actively modulate joint stiffness, enabling adaptive responses to varying tasks, impact absorption, and efficient energy transfer during dynamic actions. Inspired by this adaptability, we developed a transhumeral prosthesis with Variable Stiffness Actuators (VSAs) to replicate the controllable compliance foun

Avian influenza virus reassortants resembling the 1918 human pandemic virus can become transmissible among mammals by acquiring mutations in hemagglutinin (HA) and polymerase. Using the ferret model, we trace the evolutionary pathway by which an avian-like virus evolves the capacity for mammalian replication and airborne transmission. During initial infection, within-host HA diversity increased drastically. Then, airborne transmission fixed two polymerase mutations that do not confer a detectable replication advantage. In later transmissions, selection fixed advantageous HA1 variants. Transmis

Changes in morphology have been postulated as one of the responses of animals to global warming, with increasing ambient temperatures leading to decreasing body size. However, the results of previous studies are inconsistent. Problems related to the analyses of trends in body size may be related to the short-term nature of data sets, to the selection of surrogates for body size, to the appropriate models for data analyses, and to the interpretation as morphology may change in response to ecological drivers other than climate and irrespective of size. Using generalized additive models, we analy

The rapid emergence of bacterial strains resistant to multiple antibiotics is posing a growing public health risk. The mechanisms underlying the rapid evolution of drug resistance are, however, poorly understood. The heterogeneity of the environments in which bacteria encounter antibiotic drugs could play an important role. E.g., in the highly compartmentalized human body, drug levels can vary substantially between different organs and tissues. It has been proposed that this could facilitate the selection of resistant mutants, and recent experiments support this. To study the role of spatial h

Environmental variability poses major challenges to bread wheat production in arid regions. This study evaluated the adaptation, productivity, and grain quality of fifteen diverse bread wheat genotypes. The evaluated germplasm comprised advanced breeding lines developed by the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD), Saudi landraces, newly released cultivars, and a cultivar derived from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). Field experiments were conducted over two consecutive growing seasons (2022/2023 and 2023/2024) at two contrasting arid env

As an effective non-thermal sterilization method, ultrasound remains at the level of passive bacterial death despite the initial understanding of its sterilization mechanism. Here, we present the perspective that bacteria can choose to actively enter an apoptosis-like death state in response to external ultrasonic stress. In this study, Vibrio parahaemolyticus exhibited apoptotic markers such as phosphatidylserine ectropion and activated caspases when subjected to ultrasound stress. Additionally, the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and enhanced calcium signaling were observed. Fu

Heatwave (HW) exposure is increasing rapidly under climate change, yet its potential role in accelerating biological aging and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Leveraging data derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), a large population-based cohort in China, we examined whether exposure to HWs is linked to more rapid biological aging in adults of middle and advanced age. The Klemera-Doubal method (KDM) was applied to derive estimates of biological age (BA), and biological age acceleration (BAA) was calculated as biological age minus chronolog

Legionella pneumophila is an environmental bacterium that emerged from a prolonged co-evolution and adaptation to free-living amoebae as the natural hosts. Within these protozoan hosts, L. pneumophila evolved to evade amoebae predation and remodel their vacuoles into endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-derived vacuoles that evade phagosomal-lysosomal fusion. The L. pneumophila-amoebae co-evolution fortuitously has facilitated infection of human alveolar macrophages, resulting in pneumonia known as Legionnaires' Disease. Intracellular replication and host manipulation are orchestrated by the Dot/Icm Typ

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell-released nanoparticles whose lipid membranes enclose molecular cargo and contribute to vesicle stability, uptake, and biological activity. EV composition encodes and transmits biological information, reflecting cellular origin, membrane remodeling, metabolism, and disease-associated stress. This makes EV lipidomics highly relevant for diagnostics, therapeutics, mechanism-informed discovery, and emerging biotechnology. Recent advances in isolation, characterization, and lipidomics approaches are making EV lipid profiles increasingly interpretable. At the sa

Microbial reduction of nitrate in the presence of zero-valent iron (ZVI) was evaluated in anoxic shake flasks to assess the feasibility of ZVI-facilitated biological nitrate removal. Nitrate was completely reduced within 3days in the presence of both ZVI and microorganisms (ZVI-M). In contrast, only 75% of the nitrate was reduced in the presence of ZVI but without microbial inoculum. Nitrate removal was affected by ZVI-M flasks initial pH, nitrate concentration and ZVI dosage. Nitrate removal in the inoculated ZVI flasks system could be divided into two phases: adaptation phase and log phase w

Radiotherapy response in prostate cancer is commonly interpreted through partly separate frameworks centered on androgen receptor (AR) signaling, DNA damage response (DDR), inflammatory adaptation, and lineage plasticity. Here, we propose a translational hypothesis particularly relevant to endocrine-exposed disease in settings of biologically meaningful endocrine exposure before or during radiotherapy, especially high-risk localized, locally advanced, and selected salvage settings: the radiosensitizing effect of AR suppression may be temporally dynamic rather than fixed. In a subset of tumors,

The detection of biological markers is critical not only for the early diagnosis of cancer but also for adjustments in antitumor therapy. Rapid, sensitive, and selective detection and monitoring of the content of specific biomarkers in real time are key to point-of-care testing diagnostics. We report the detection of heat shock proteins by fluorescence immunoassay with the appropriate phage antibodies, with a minimum detection limit of 1 ng/mL. The fluorescence immunoassay data were confirmed by dot immunoassay and by circular dichroism studies. The results of the study may help in the adaptat

Mitochondria are traditionally viewed as a homogeneous network supporting cellular energy production. However, increasing evidence reveals substantial heterogeneity across biological scales, from intramitochondrial microdomains to specialised mitochondrial populations within cells and tissues. These subpopulations differ in morphology, metabolism, bioenergetics, and spatial organisation, reflecting adaptation to local functional demands. In this Review, we discuss the mechanisms underlying mitochondrial heterogeneity, the emerging concept of mitochondrial subclasses, their functional integrati

Complex diseases driven by gene-environment interactions impose a heavy burden on human and animal health. Addressing these challenges requires innovative research. The emerging field of historical epigenomics offers a promising opportunity to link genotypes with phenotypes using preserved biological material. New methods such as historical chromatin profiling in museum specimens provide valuable insights into vertebrate genome regulation. Building on successful work with formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples, we expect growing interest in using historical specimens for biomedical, e

The evolutionary mechanisms by which SARS-CoV-2 viruses adapt to mammalian hosts and, potentially, undergo antigenic evolution depend on the ways genetic variation is generated and selected within and between individual hosts. Using domestic cats as a model, we show that SARS-CoV-2 consensus sequences remain largely unchanged over time within hosts, while dynamic sub-consensus diversity reveals processes of genetic drift and weak purifying selection. We further identify a notable variant at amino acid position 655 in Spike (H655Y), which was previously shown to confer escape from human monoclo

Evolutionary trends in the evolution of host specificity have been the focus of much discussion but little rigorous empirical testing. On the one hand, specialization is often presumed to lead irreversibly into evolutionary dead ends and little diversification; this would mean that generalists might evolve into specialists, but not vice versa. On the other hand, low host specificity may limit the risk of extinction and provide more immediate fitness benefits to parasites, such that selection may favour evolution toward a generalist strategy. Here, we test for directionality in the evolution of

Physicians in internal medicine are exposed to high levels of stress. Conditions of chronic emotional fatigue and burnout are widespread. Resilience, the ability to cope with difficult situations and to adapt to adverse circumstances, is essential. Resilient physicians remain calm, make clear decisions and are in a position to support the collegial environment as well as to requisition and utilize support themselves. Resilience can be described at a biological level and is influenced by biological mechanisms, such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis; , even resilience of patients should

Preterm birth, low birthweight, intrauterine growth retardation and small for gestational age are birth phenotypes that significantly contribute to life-long morbidity and mortality. This review examines the epidemiologic and biologic evidence of folic acid (FA) as a potential population-based intervention to curtail some adverse birth phenotypic expressions, and by extension, their later physical and neurodevelopmental consequences. We outlined a feto-placental adaptation categorization taking into account how prenatal insults may be encoded in fetal development, the adaptive success of the f
