PURPOSE: To document the functional outcome of two patients following successful macular translocation for the treatment of severe subretinal hemorrhage in age-related maculopathy.
METHODS: The retina was surgically rotated around the optic nerve with translocation of the fovea either upward or downward to an area of healthy retinal pigment epithelium. In the postoperative period, visual function was carefully studied with emphasis on adaptation to torsion.
RESULTS: Visual acuity in one patient improved from 20/200 to 20/80 and the other patient remained at 20/200. Both patients developed ho

This study examined the ocular compensation to lens-induced defocus in chick and the effect of interrupting lens wear on a daily basis. Eyes fitted with +10 D lenses at hatching compensated rapidly, with almost complete compensation after 4 days of lens wear; they had decreased vitreous chamber depth compared to normal eyes and were thus hyperopic when the lenses were removed. In contrast, adaptation to the -10 D lenses was much slower, was still incomplete after 9 days of lens wear, and in this case, eyes had increased vitreous chamber depth and were myopic without the lenses. Adaptation impr

Parrots (Psittaciformes) comprise a large group of approximately 400 species of birds. There are currently no comprehensive reviews of parrot ophthalmology in the peer-reviewed literature. This review describes the unique ocular variations of parrots, including visual ability and anatomic adaptations. A comprehensive summary of ophthalmic diagnostic tests, including aqueous tear measurements, tonometry, conjunctival cytology, conjunctival microbiology, and ocular ultrasonography, in clinically normal psittacine birds is presented. Common ocular disorders of parrots and their treatments are dis

Long-term spaceflight induces multisystem stress, including cardiovascular deconditioning, skeletal muscle atrophy, immune suppression, and neuro-ocular syndromes. Current countermeasures reduce symptoms but cannot replicate the synergistic resilience needed for extended missions or critical illness. Hibernating animals, specifically brown bears (Ursus arctos), survive prolonged immobility, starvation, and bradycardia without resultant pathology. This review incorporates adaptations observed in bears and certain torpid species, including reversible insulin resistance, suppression of muscle atr

Moving objects are often occluded behind larger, stationary objects, but we can easily predict when and where they reappear. Here, we show that the prediction of object reappearance is subject to adaptive learning. When monkeys generated predictive saccades to the location of target reappearance, systematic changes in the location or timing of target reappearance independently altered the endpoint or latency of the saccades. Furthermore, spatial adaptation of predictive saccades did not alter visually triggered reactive saccades, whereas adaptation of reactive saccades altered the metrics of p

Recent evidence suggests that the human brain automatically constructs a rich model of other people's attention, beyond registering low-level cues such as someone else's gaze direction. This model is not a physically accurate representation of attention, but instead appears to contain simplifying and physically incoherent features. For example, without explicitly realizing it, people treat the attentive gaze of others as though it exerts a gentle force pushing on objects. Here we specify another aspect of that implicit model of attention. People treat the attentive gaze of an agent as though i

More than half of astronauts returning from long-duration missions on the International Space Station present with neuro-ocular structural and/or functional changes, including optic disc edema, optic nerve sheath distension, globe flattening, choroidal folds, or hyperopic shifts. This spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) represents a major risk to future exploration class human spaceflight missions, including Mars missions. Although the exact pathophysiology of SANS is unknown, evidence thus far suggests that an increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) relative to the upright pos

PURPOSE: It is well established that spatial adaptation can improve visual acuity over time in the presence of spherical defocus. It is less well known how far adaptation to astigmatic defocus can enhance visual acuity. We adapted subjects to "simulated" and optically-induced "real" astigmatic defocus, and studied how much they adapt and how selective adaptation was for the axis of astigmatism.
METHODS: Ten subjects with a mean age of 26.7±2.4years (range 23-30) were enrolled in the study, three of them myopic (average spherical equivalent (SE)±SD: -3.08±1.42D) and seven emmetropic (average S

Adapting to blurred or sharpened images alters perceived blur of a focused image (M. A. Webster, M. A. Georgeson, & S. M. Webster, 2002). We asked whether blur adaptation results in (a) renormalization of perceived focus or (b) a repulsion aftereffect. Images were checkerboards or 2-D Gaussian noise, whose amplitude spectra had (log-log) slopes from -2 (strongly blurred) to 0 (strongly sharpened). Observers adjusted the spectral slope of a comparison image to match different test slopes after adaptation to blurred or sharpened images. Results did not show repulsion effects but were consistent

We investigated the orientation of quick phases (QPs) of vestibularly-induced eye movements in rabbits in response to "off-vertical" sinusoidal vestibular stimulation. We also examined the possible role of the cerebellar nodulus and ventral uvula in controlling QP spatial orientation and modification. During "off-vertical" vestibular stimulation QPs remained aligned with the earth's horizontal plane, while the slow phases (SPs) were aligned with the plane of vestibular stimulation. This suggests that QPs are coded in gravito-inertial coordinates and SPs in head coordinates. When rabbits were o

Light history has been shown to affect the susceptibility of the albino rat retina to the damaging effects of constant light exposure. Retinas of animals raised in relatively bright cyclic light are protected against light-induced degeneration compared with dim-reared animals. These effects were observed in animals raised from birth in bright cyclic light and are part of an adaptive response that protects photoreceptors from stress-induced degeneration. To determine if retinas of adult animals are capable of such adaptive changes or flexibility by switching between different light environments

There appears to be a fundamental step-transition in retinal function at low light intensities, close to the scotopic-mesopic transition. This step-transition is observed for elements of the retinal dark-light switch, which has been described in the chicken retina. Over the same range of light intensities, there is a step-transition in photoreceptor retinomotor movements and in the coupling of horizontal and All amacrine cells, which suggests a switch in retinal circuitry from rod-processing to cone-processing regimes. A similar step-transition in pineal function suggests that the retinal step

VOR parameters were compared in subjects at the extremes of the seasickness susceptibility scale. Thirty-nine subjects highly susceptible to seasickness and 30 nonsusceptible subjects participated in the study. The VOR was evaluated by the Sinusoidal Harmonic Acceleration (SHA) test at frequencies of 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08, and 0.16 Hz. In subjects susceptible to seasickness, VOR gain was significantly higher at 0.02 and 0.04 Hz, and phase lead was significantly lower at 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.08 Hz, than in nonsusceptible subjects. Our findings are in agreement with the notion that the vesti

The direct-current electroretinogram of seven pigmented and seven albino rabbits was recorded from both eyes for almost 4 h in response to repeated identical light stimuli. Stimulus duration was 10 s, light intensity was 6.8 x 10(2) lux, and the interval between the beginning of succeeding light stimuli was 3 min. The dark-adaptation period preceding light stimulation was 30 min for one of the eyes ('unoccluded eye') and 150 min for the contralateral eye ('occluded eye'), which was patched during the first part (117 min) of the experiment. In pigmented animals, the b- and c-wave amplitudes of

We performed a prospective study of preoperative prism adaptation in 77 patients with acquired esotropia. Sixty-three of them increased their angle of squint when wearing Fresnel press-on prisms for 5-7 days. After the angle had stabilized to a point that did not exceed the press-on prisms by more than 10 prism D, they were randomly divided into two groups. Thirty-two patients underwent surgery based on the prism-adapted angle. The other 31 patients underwent surgery based on their initially measured angle. Fourteen patients who did not respond to prism correction underwent surgery based on th

A single-flash ERG and an EOG were performed in four cases of fundus heterotopicus. While the EOG responses showed a normal light and dark adaptation, the ERG registered a subnormal a- and b-wave, corresponding to the extent of the medial ectasia. Where hemeralopia was present, the ERG showed a monophasic a-wave and a markedly reduced b-wave. That means that in addition to the simple fundus heterotopicus, there is also a form with several clinical characteristics in which a hemeralopia is adaptometrically and electroretinographically demonstrable.

Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) plays a crucial role in regulating oxygen sensing and adaptation at the cellular level, overseeing cellular oxygen homeostasis, erythrocyte production, angiogenesis, and mitochondrial metabolism. The hypoxia-sensitive HIF-1α subunit facilitates tissue adaptation to hypoxic conditions, including the stimulation of proangiogenic factors. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a proliferative vascular disease of the retina that poses a significant risk to prematurely born children. If untreated, ROP can lead to retinal detachment, severe visual impairment, and even bli

Imaging diagnosis plays a fundamental role in avian medicine. However, there are few publications regarding its use in ophthalmology. Seabirds, in particular, present a peculiar ecology since their lives take place in very diverse environments: the aquatic, the terrestrial, and the aerial. This fact implies a series of adaptations at a visual level that are necessary for adequate interaction with the environment. Therefore, knowledge of eye particularities is of great importance for the scientific community since it allows us to deepen our understanding of the ocular anatomy and biology of the
