We employed a BONCAT-iTRAQ labelling approach to investigate newly synthesised proteins (NSPs) in Toxoplasma gondii subjected to varying concentrations of the antifolate drug pyrimethamine. Our results reveal that numerous NSPs exhibited altered expression levels in response to the drug, with significant upregulation observed at higher concentrations. Key proteins involved in protein synthesis, stress responses, energy metabolism, and cytoskeletal dynamics were identified, indicating that T. gondii undergoes complex adaptive responses to pyrimethamine treatment. While some of the identified pa

Motor neurons represent the final output from the central respiratory network. American bullfrogs, Lithobates catesbieanus, have provided insight into development and plasticity of the breathing control system, yet cellular aspects of bullfrog motor neurons are not well-described. In this study, we characterized properties of laryngeal motor neurons that produce motor outflow to the glottal dilator, a muscle that gates airflow to the lungs of anurans. To this end, we measured several intrinsic membrane properties of labeled laryngeal motor neurons in brain slices. Using unsupervised clustering

Recently, sulfur dioxide (SO2) has been considered to be a beneficial bio-regulator in animals. However, the positive roles of SO2 in plant adaptation to drought stress are still unclear. In this study, we investigated the physiological and molecular changes that are induced by SO2 fumigation to improve the drought tolerance of foxtail millet seedlings. The relative water content in the leaves of drought-stressed seedlings was significantly improved by pre-exposure to 30 mg/m3 SO2. These responses might be related to decreased stomatal apertures and a reduced leaf transpiration rate, which wer

Three sequential studies were performed to evaluate the effects of tying horses while wearing overchecks (strap from the bridle to backpad). In an observational study, horses (n = 305) wore high (HC), low (LC), or no overchecks (NC) with frequencies of 29.2%, 51.8% and 19.0% respectively. Study 1 (Latin square, n = 6) consisted of a 90-min tie test (90TT) with treatments (HC, LC, NC) x periods (1-3). Horses wearing HC had higher plasma cortisol (P < 0.01) when compared to LC and NC. Muscle soreness (MSS) and tightness (MTS) were evaluated pre and 24 hr post 90TT and were higher (P < 0.01) 24 h

Neuroendocrine dysfunction, in particular impaired synthesis of anterior pituitary hormones, is a common complication of traumatic brain injury. Deficiency of tropic pituitary hormones entails a hypofunction of the related peripheral endocrine glands and can be accompanied by persistent endocrine and metabolic disorders. In particular, the hypophyseal mechanisms are the key ones in implementation of most stress effects. Adequate implementation of these mechanisms largely determines a favorable outcome in the acute stage of disease. Traumatic brain injury (as well as any significant injury) ini

Plants exposed to certain abiotic stress conditions tend to produce the amino acid proline, which acts as an active osmolyte, a metal chelator, an antioxidant, and a signaling molecule. There is increasing evidence that proline accumulates in plants due to a wide range of abiotic stress, in particular high soil salinity and drought. Therefore, proline content is often used as a marker-assisted breeding tool aimed at improving drought and salinity tolerance. In this study, it was investigated whether proline accumulation in date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) seedlings occurs solely due to high

Supernumerary robotic fingers (SRFs) are wearable assistive devices, which are increasingly incorporated into robotic rehabilitation programs aimed at restoring upper-limb function and promoting task-specific compensation. Despite growing evidence of SRF efficacy in improving motor performance, limited attention has been given to physiological adaptation and autonomic nervous system (ANS) integration during SRF use. This study investigated phase coherence (PC) and amplitude-weighted phase coherence (AWPC) of RR intervals derived from photoplethysmogram (PPG) as noninvasive biomarkers for auton

A variety of strategies exist to modulate the acute physiological responses following resistance exercise aimed at enhancing recovery and/or adaptation processes. To assess the true impact of these strategies, it is important to know the ability of different measures to detect meaningful change. We investigated the sensitivity of measures used to quantify acute physiological responses to resistance exercise and constructed a physiological profile to characterise the magnitude of change and the time course of these responses. Eight males accustomed to regular resistance exercise performed exper

Podocytes are essential for glomerular function by maintaining the integrity of the glomerular filtration barrier. As terminally differentiated, post-mitotic cells, they are highly vulnerable to injury, which represents a central event in the development of chronic kidney disease. Although podocytes have been extensively studied to elucidate their structure and function, their metabolism and the role of metabolic dysregulation in podocyte injury remain incompletely understood. This review summarizes current knowledge of podocyte metabolism and its responses to diverse stressors. We discuss the

Knowledge about photosynthetic adaptation and stress tolerance in tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius) accessions under acidic soil and high‑temperature conditions in the Colombian Amazon is limited. We developed a stress tolerance index (STI) as a helpful scorecard based on physiological measurements of 323 accessions that were grown in acidic soil under field and screenhouse conditions and were evaluated under well‑watered and water‑stressed treatments at dawn and midday. Based on STI and complementary photosynthetic traits, accessions were classified into five adaptive categories (highly: n

BACKGROUND: Most crop plants, including sugar beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris), suffer from domestication bottlenecks and low genetic diversity caused by extensive selection for few traits. However, crop wild relatives (CWRs) harbour useful traits relevant for crop improvement, including enhanced adaptation to biotic and abiotic stresses. Especially polyploids are interesting from an evolutionary perspective as the genome undergoes reorganisation after the polyploidisation event. Through neo- and subfunctionalisation, novel gene functions emerge, which enable plants to cope with changing e

Saline-alkali soils, commonly found in coastal regions, impose substantial environmental stress on trees, affecting both growth and wood formation. The mechanisms through which trees adapt to these conditions are multifaceted, primarily involving physiological and biochemical responses. Therefore, the impact on wood properties and associated metabolic pathways warrants further exploration. Two-year-old Taxodium "Zhongshanshan302" seedlings were cultivated in salinized soil, simulating the saline-alkali ion ratio typical of a coastal mudflat. The response of wood-forming tissues to salt-alkali

The widespread use of antibiotics has led to their persistence in aquatic environments, posing serious challenges to biological treatment systems. This study systematically compared the performance and adaptive mechanisms of partial denitrification (PD)/anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) and single anammox systems under long-term sulfamethoxazole (SMX) stress over 193 days. At an influent SMX concentration of 3 mg/L, the PD/anammox system retained 75% of its initial total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency, significantly higher than that of the single anammox system (49%). The PD/

Promoting the long-term viability of agriculture in the face of climate change has spurred a rise in alternative approaches to enhance crop resilience. Universally, the significant risk of crop yield reduction in cereal crops due to flooding has become a prominent concern, and this threat is anticipated to intensify in various regions worldwide due to future climatic anomalies. Flooding stress induces oxygen (O2) deficiency within the plant system, serving as a major restriction for plant growth during submerged and waterlogged environments. Plants experience fluctuating levels of O2 contents,

Chronic diseases increasingly reflect a shared biological origin: persistent cellular stress. This review summarizes the biochemical mechanisms that normally preserve cellular homeostasis, namely redox regulation, endoplasmic reticulum proteostasis, mitochondrial quality control, autophagy, and DNA damage response, and explains how they fail under sustained lifestyle-related overload. Repeated exposure to psychological stress, sleep disruption, hypercaloric intake, and physical inactivity shifts adaptive signaling toward maladaptation, promoting oxidative damage, protein misfolding, mitochondr

Post-translational modification (PTM) plays a crucial role in adaptation of mammals to environmental changes, enabling them to survive in stressful situations. One such PTM is SUMO modification, which is evolutionarily conserved. It involves the covalent and reversible attachment of a small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) to lysine (Lys) residues in the target protein. SUMOylation regulates various functions, including cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, senescence, and maintenance of specific cellular activities. It achieves this by influencing protein-protein interactions, subcell

Amphibious plants can grow and survive in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. This review explores the diverse adaptations that enable them to thrive in such contrasting habitats. Plants with amphibious lifestyles possess fascinating traits, and their phenotypic plasticity plays an important role in adaptations. Heterophylly, the ability to produce different leaf forms, is one such trait, with submerged leaves generally being longer, narrower, and thinner than aerial leaves. In addition to drastic changes in leaf contours, amphibious plants display significant anatomical and physiologic

Plants and bacteria are co-evolving and interact with one another in a continuous process. This interaction enables the plant to assimilate the nutrients and acquire protection with the help of beneficial bacteria known as plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB). These beneficial bacteria naturally produce bioactive compounds that can assist plants' stress tolerance. Moreover, they employ various direct and indirect processes to induce plant growth and protect plants against pathogens. The direct mechanisms involve phytohormone production, phosphate solubilization, zinc solubilization, potassiu

Photosynthesis is not only essential for plants, but it also sustains life on Earth. Phytohormones play crucial roles in developmental processes, from organ initiation to senescence, due to their role as growth and developmental regulators, as well as their central role in the regulation of photosynthesis. Furthermore, phytohormones play a major role in photoprotection of the photosynthetic apparatus under stress conditions. Here, in addition to discussing our current knowledge on the role of the phytohormones auxin, cytokinins, gibberellins, and strigolactones in promoting photosynthesis, we
