The centrality of cognition and coping styles in driving aggressive responses.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the presence of theoretical frameworks explaining aggression, they still require refinement in the form of a specification of mechanisms that facilitate such behaviour. METHOD: Study 1 recruited participants (N = 31) from the general population (N = 20) and from a forensic hospital (N = 11). It was expected that aggression supportive cognitions and stress would be positively associated with aggressive behaviour. An experimental paradigm was used to induce stress and participants were subsequently given the opportunity to aggress. Study 2 was based on self-report questionnai

Negative Recovery Capital in Gambling Disorder: A Conceptual Model of Barriers to Recovery.

Recovery from any addiction, including gambling, involves continuous efforts to improve wellness despite the obstacles and challenges. The recovery capital (RC) model is a holistic conceptual framework operationalized along a continuum ranging from positive internal and external RC resources that enhance recovery to negative recovery capital (NRC) which are defined as obstacles that impede individuals from coping with their addiction. Although previous studies have conceptualized the positive side of the RC model, no study has systematically explored NRC. This study develops a model that maps

Psychiatric Approaches and Outcomes.

Since the 1940s, the importance of addressing polio survivors' psychological issues along with their physical needs has been known. The clinical literature and polio survivors' narratives indicate positive responses to both psychotherapy and psychologically informed medical care for issues connected with acute polio and rehabilitation experiences as well as post-polio syndrome. Yet, barriers in the form of stigma and lack of awareness and resources prevent most from accessing such care. This article addresses the provision of polio-informed psychological treatment as well as ways of creating a

Refugee Children and Interventions for Depression: A Review of Current Interventions and Implications of the Ecological Context.

As of 2018, over 25.4 million people worldwide meet the criteria to be considered refugees, the highest number on record. Over half of these individuals are under 18 years old, leaving approximately 12 million children to cope with the trauma and stress typically encountered by refugees. Increased rates of depression in this population are well-documented in the literature. This article reviews the ecological determinants of depression for displaced children and current empirical methods for alleviating depression across contexts. PubMed and PsycINFO databases were reviewed for articles that m

Psychosocial recommendations for the care of children and adults with epidermolysis bullosa and their family: evidence based guidelines.

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a group of rare genetic disorders resulting in skin fragility and other symptoms. Commissioned by DEBRA International and funded by DEBRA Norway, this evidence-bases guideline provides recommendations to optimise psychosocial wellbeing in EB.An international multidisciplinary panel of social and health care professionals (HCP) and people living with EB was formed. A systematic international literature review was conducted by the panel following the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) methodology. The resulting papers underwent systematic selection a

Looking into the crystal ball of our emotional lives: emotion regulation and the overestimation of future guilt and shame.

In the present study, we examined the impact of emotion regulation on the intensity bias in guilt and shame. Fifty-two undergraduates either forecasted their emotions and emotion regulation following a guilt- and shame-eliciting situation or reported their actual experienced emotions and employed emotion regulation. Results showed a clear intensity bias, that is, forecasters predicted to experience more guilt and shame than experiencers actually experienced. Furthermore, results showed that forecasters predicted to employ less down-regulating emotion regulation (i.e. less acceptance) and more

[Psychological support to burn patients].

Severe burns and their treatment are among the most painful experiences a person can have. Emotional needs of burn patients have long been overshadowed by the focus on survival. Today, when the survival rate is much higher than in the past, the need of psychological and psychosocial engagement in working with victims of severe burns has emerged. A patient undergoing various stages of adjustment is faced with emotional challenges that accompany physical recovery. Adapting to burn injury involves a complex interplay between patient characteristics before the occurrence of burn, environmental fac

Can you handle failure?

Handling failure and blame is key to managerial success. But roughly 70 % of Americans have a personality type that tends to react inappropriately when things go wrong. Some people are extrapunitive, always pointing a finger at someone else. Others are impunitive, denying there's a problem or that they played any role. And still others are intrapunitive, heaping too much blame on themselves and seeing disasters where none exist. Fortunately, there are ways to fix such flawed responses. The first step is to cultivate self-awareness; several personality tests can help you assess your interaction

Uncontained rage: a psychoanalytic perspective on violence.

Explosions of violent behavior have periodically riveted public attention. While such behavior may be associated with a major psychiatric illness, there is a continuing challenge to understand the emotional underpinnings of such behavior, the sources of aggression, hostility, anger, hate, rage, and violence. Analysts from Freud to Karl Menninger to Kernberg and Kohut have speculated as to the confluence of psychological and real forces that prompt violent outbursts. Other analysts have explored the manifestations of aggression and rage in infancy and childhood. An instance of a violent outburs

Turn your research wishes into action--and make it fun.

Recognizing that beginning researchers have difficulty starting a study and successfully completing it, the authors describe 10 guidelines for conducting a research study and making it fun. They describe strategies such as working with a partner, selecting an exciting topic to study, and using time effectively. They discuss ways to seek support from colleagues and friends and also provide information about writing grant proposals. The authors provide personal examples from their research on enema techniques to illustrate each guideline.

Facilitating emotional coping during treatment.

Patient resources for coping with breast cancer can be enhanced by attention to cognitive, affective, psychosomatic, and social components of the illness. The diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer constitutes an immediate confrontation with mortality, and sympathetic but direct examination of the patient's vulnerability and means of coping with it will reduce rather than amplify death anxiety. The development and pursuit of realistic goals influenced by the prognosis can help patients adjust constructively. Extremes of emotion are to be expected at times, but persistent depression and/or an

The Lived Experience of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivors: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study.

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a life-threatening event that profoundly affects the physical, psychological, social, and overall well-being of survivors. Implementation of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) may further contribute to psychosocial challenges, despite providing a sense of reassurance. However, the multidimensional and overall effects on SCA survivors with ICDs are not been fully understood. OBJECTIVE: In this study, our aim was to explore the lived experiences of SCA survivors with ICDs, focusing on adaptation, meaning in life, and insights to support ps

Exploring the mediating role of active coping in reducing perceived stress among men with advanced prostate cancer: a randomized controlled trial of cognitive behavioral stress management.

Cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM), which integrates active coping strategies, has been shown to enhance psychological adaptation in cancer survivors, resulting in reduced emotional distress and better quality of life. However, research on the impact of active coping in advanced cancer survivorship remains underexplored. This study examined whether active coping mediated the effects of CBSM on perceived stress among men with advanced prostate cancer (APC). APC survivors (N = 189) who had received androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) were randomized to a 10-week CBSM or a health promot

Self-help techniques for auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

Even with the best treatment available in the United States, people with schizophrenia often remain troubled by auditory hallucinations. Given the less than optimal results of traditional mental health care, the following exploratory study was conducted. A convenience sample of 33 adult outpatients with schizophrenia were interviewed to elicit what (if any) self-help strategies they used for coping with auditory hallucinations. The patients were all being treated at a community mental health clinic. The self-help strategies reported by the patients included (a) physiological changes, (b) cogni
