Human nasopharyngeal-associated lymphoreticular tissues. Functional analysis of subepithelial and intraepithelial B and T cells from adenoids and tonsils.

Subepithelial and intraepithelial lymphocytes of human adenoids and tonsils were characterized and directly compared to determine the potential contribution of these tissues to mucosal and systemic immune responses. The distribution of T and B cell subsets, cytokine patterns, and antibody (Ab) isotype profiles were similar for adenoids and tonsils. Both tissues contained predominantly B cells ( approximately 65%), approximately 5% macrophages, and 30% CD3(+) T cells. The T cells were primarily of the CD4(+) subset ( approximately 80%). Tonsillar intraepithelial lymphocytes were also enriched i…

Influence of upper airway obstruction by enlarged tonsils and adenoids upon recurrent infection of the lower airway in childhood.

The influence of hypertrophied tonsils and adenoids upon ventilation during sleep was evaluated by polygraphic recording before and after adenotonsillectomy. In all 19 cases, esophageal pressure during sleep was elevated as high as 4-6 times normal. This was caused by nasal obstruction due to adenoid hypertrophy and obstruction of the "oral airway" by hypertrophied tonsil and collapse of the tongue due to muscular relaxation during sleep. When minimal amount of contrast media was instilled slowly into the nasopharynx aspiration of the contrast media into the lung was found significnatly more f…

Correlation of Conductive Hearing Impairment With Sizes of Adenoids in the Pediatric Age Group: An Observational Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: When adenoids enlarge and elicit symptoms it is referred to as symptomatic adenoids, which is a preventable cause of hearing loss and nasal obstruction in the pediatric age group. This study was done to correlate conductive hearing loss with the size of adenoids and to emphasize the importance of screening in the pediatric age group. METHODS: An observational case-control study was conducted to analyze the degree of hearing impairment in children with adenoid hypertrophy. In total, 98 patients with at least one symptom of adenoid hypertrophy aged between 5 and <15 years were rec…

Relationships among nasal resistance, adenoids, tonsils, and tongue posture and maxillofacial form in Class II and Class III children.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationships between upper airway factors (nasal resistance, adenoids, tonsils, and tongue posture) and maxillofacial forms in Class II and III children. METHODS: Sixty-four subjects (mean age, 9.3 years) with malocclusion were divided into Class II and Class III groups by ANB angles. Nasal resistance was calculated using computational fluid dynamics from cone-beam computed tomography data. Adenoids, tonsils, and tongue posture were evaluated in the cone-beam computed tomography images. The groups were compared using Mann-Whitney U t…

Unintended avulsion of hypertrophic adenoids in posterior nasopharynx: a case report of a rare complication caused by nasotracheal intubation.

The enlarged adenoid serves as a mechanical obstacle on the nasopharynx to intricate nasotracheal intubation. No matter what video or direct laryngoscopic techniques are applied, nasotracheal tube navigation from the nasal valve area through the nasal cavity to the nasopharynx is always blind; trauma is not uncommon. Here we report a case of unintended avulsed adenoids that plugged the tube tip while the nasotracheal tube blindly navigated through the nasopharyngeal space. After failing to insert a bent tip of gum elastic bougie passing through the nasopharynx, an alternative method of NTI was…

Nonpigmented Adenoid Subtype of Basal Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: Baicalein, a natural flavonoid derived from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis, has demonstrated antitumor efficacy in several cancers. However, its effects on human mesothelioma remain largely unclear. This study evaluates the antitumor roles and mechanisms of baicalein in mesothelioma cell lines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Effects of baicalein on mesothelioma cells phenotypic changes were investigated by measuring cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, invasion, and cell-cycle alterations. Bioinformatic methods were applied to predict the mechanisms by which baicalien mediated its

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast: a case series of 26 patients.

BACKGROUND: Although triple-negative, adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast (ACCB) is an uncommon, slow-growing malignancy with a favorable prognosis. There are no treatment standards or therapeutic consensus because of its scarcity. METHODS: Data on 26 patients with ACCB from two distinct French cancer centers were presented in this study. Clinical, histological and molecular features of these carcinomas were described. Therapeutic management and patient follow-up was also reported. RESULTS: The median age of this cohort was 59 years [22-82] and the median follow-up was 4.2 years [0.5-23.9

MEOX1 Inhibits Growth and Metastasis of Salivary Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma.

Salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) is a malignant salivary gland neoplasm characterized by aggressive local invasion and a marked propensity for metastasis. However, the role of MEOX1 in SACC progression remains poorly defined. In this study, we examined the effects of MEOX1 overexpression on the malignant behavior of SACC cells in vitro and in vivo. Human SACC-83 and SACC-LM cells were transduced with lentiviral vectors encoding MEOX1 or an empty vector control, and cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and cell cycle distribution were assessed using CCK-8, wound healing, Transwell,

Adenoid hypertrophy is associated with poorer outcomes of acute mastoiditis in children.

INTRODUCTION: Acute mastoiditis is one of the most common complication of acute otitis media, and its clinical course may vary significantly among patients. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between adenoid size and the severity of acute mastoiditis in children. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included children (<18 years) hospitalized with acute mastoiditis. The primary outcome was the association between disease severity-defined by the presence of intracranial complications or PICU admission - and the adenoid-to-nasopharyngeal ratio (ANR), measured on CT scans at three nas

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast: a clinicopathological case series.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast (ACCB) is a rare special-type carcinoma, accounting for <0.1% of breast malignancies. Despite its frequent triple-negative phenotype, ACCB typically demonstrates indolent behavior and a favorable prognosis. Owing to its rarity and overlapping radiologic and histopathological features, accurate diagnosis can be challenging. We retrospectively analyzed three cases of histologically confirmed primary ACCB diagnosed at a tertiary care center. Clinical presentation, imaging findings, histomorphology, immunohistochemistry, treatment, and follow-up data were rev

Adenoid Ameloblastoma: The Newly Recognized Odontogenic Tumor - A Case Report.

Adenoid ameloblastoma is a newly recognized epithelial odontogenic tumor. Herein, we present the case of a 24-year-old male patient who exhibited swelling in the anterior region and right hemi-mandible. Computed tomography demonstrated the presence of a hypodense osteolytic lesion associated with an impacted tooth. Based on the clinical hypotheses of the dentigerous cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, and ameloblastoma, an incisional biopsy was performed, and the diagnosis of ameloblastoma was rendered. A surgical resection of the tumor was performed. Histopathological examination of the specimen re
