Death and injury in aerial spraying: pre-crash, crash, and post-crash prevention strategies.

To prevent crash-related death and injury among spray pilots, a program including pre-crash, crash and post-crash stages of intervention for aircraft, physical environment, and pilots and ground crews was proposed in accordance with a matrix of options derived from road crash epidemiology. In addition to the dangers of fixed obstacles, low-altitude runs, and heavy work schedules, work hazards included combined exposures to noise, vibration, G forces, heat stress, pesticides, and dehydration. Together, these exposures were believed to have produced slight, but crucial decreases in pilot perform…

Three dimensional CT reconstruction images for craniofacial surgical planning and evaluation.

Three dimensional reconstruction images of bony and soft tissue surfaces have improved understanding of complex facial deformities. Applied to CT studies of complex craniofacial abnormalities, this method has delineated abnormal facial soft tissue and bony morphology, facilitated surgical planning, and improved quantitative postoperative evaluation. Advanced computer-aided aircraft design techniques were adapted and applied to craniofacial surgical procedure-planning and evaluation using surface contours obtained from CT scans.

Pilot Mental Health, Methodologies, and Findings: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Pilots' mental health has received increased attention following Germanwings Flight 9525 in 2015, where the copilot intentionally crashed the aircraft into the French Alps, killing all on board. An investigation of this incident found that the pilot had a depressive disorder.METHODS: This systematic review investigated peer reviewed studies of pilot mental health published since 1980. A total of 58 papers were identified.RESULTS: Two main methodologies have been employed: questionnaires and database record searches. Anxiety, depression, and suicide were the most commonly investig…

Infant With Acute Bilateral Pneumothorax During Air Transport.

In rural settings, medically complicated patients may require air transport to facilities that are capable of providing higher levels of car … acute bilateral pneumothorax (PTX) while mechanically ventilated during a transport on a fixed-wing aircraft. In this article we outline the unique risks of air travel on the development and progression of PTX as well as the unique challenges with diagnosis and treatment during air transport.

Heart rate responses to moderate linear body accelerations: clinical implications in aeromedical evacuation.

Linear accelerations during take-off and landing were measured in both civilian and military aircraft usually involved in aeromedical evacuations in Denmark. Accelerations of similar durations and magnitudes were induced in six healthy subjects transported in an ambulance in different supine positions. Heart rate responses recorded depended significantly on the position of the subject. It was concluded that seriously ill patients must be positioned transversely to the axis of acceleration during aeromedical evacuation.

A baiting system for the oral rabies vaccination of wild foxes and skunks.

A bait delivery system has been developed for red foxes and skunks in Ontario, Canada. A biomarker (Tetracycline HCl) is incorporated into a meatball in a plastic bag. Deposits of tetracycline in teeth are detected microscopically with ultra-violet illumination of undecalcified sections. Baits were dropped from aircraft at the rate of 35 per km2 and accepted by 70% of foxes and 60% of skunks in the test area. Trials of various strains of inactivated vaccines are in progress.

Impact of Indoor Air Pollution on Occupational Exposure: Rethinking the Major Health Threat for Airport Workers.

(1) Background: Airports workers are exposed to a mixture of airborne pollutants generated by aircraft operations, ground support equipment, road traffic, and indoor microenvironments. Indoor air quality, influenced by outdoor pollutant and ventilation dynamics, represents an important, but overlooked determinant of occupational exposure. Fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM) can induce oxidative stress, inflammation, and xenobiotic responses, affecting not only the respiratory system, but also other organs. (2) Methods: This review examines the health effects of occupational exposure amo…

Increased Functional Connectivity Between the Parietal and Occipital Modules Among Flight Cadets.

INTRODUCTION: Modular organization in brain regions often performs specific biological functions and is largely based on anatomically and/or … group. This change was largely attributed to flight training.DISCUSSION: Pilots need to control the aircraft (e.g., attitude, heading, etc.) using the stick and pedal in response to the current state of the aircraft displayed by the instrument panel; as such, flying requires a large amount of hand-eye coordination. Day-to-day flight training appeared to in …

Childhood cancer and occupational radiation exposure in parents.

To test the hypothesis that a parent's job exposure to radiation affects his or her child's risk of cancer, the authors compared this exposu … oderate potential ionizing radiation exposure. Children with cancer more often had fathers who were aircraft mechanics (odds ratio (OR) = infinity, one-sided 95% lower limit = 1.5; P = 0.04). Although four of these six were military aircraft mechanics, only children whose fathers had military jobs with potential ionizing radiation exposure had an increased …

Major facial trauma after helicopter landing.

Injuries in civil aviation can occur as a consequence of work-related accidents happening in airport. The ground crew can sustain slips, trips, falls, and machinery accidents. Most such accidents are observed when aircraft is departing. This clinical report describes a case of an airport ground assistant severely injured by a helicopter after the strike with a main rotor blade that was slowing after that the craft was landed and the engine was stopped, and reports surgical emergency treatment of life-threatening facial lesions.

Evaluation of the Helicopter Emergency Breathing Apparatus on Egress Performance.

BACKGROUND: Emergency helicopter landing at sea is dangerous. Specialized training, known as helicopter underwater escape training (HUET), prepares occupants to quickly exit the helicopter, which often inverts and sinks. In most jurisdictions, helicopter occupants are equipped with a helicopter underwater egress breathing apparatus (HUEBA) to provide sufficient air for escape. HUET trainees report that the HUEBA is easy to use, but it is well known that learners are often overconfident in their judgement of learning. To better understand how the HUEBA affects HUET sequence performance, we inve

The personal limitations checklist: human factors insights from air accidents to reduce intraoperative harm.

High Reliability Organisations (HRO), including healthcare and aviation, have a common focus on risk management. The human element is a 'weak link' which may result in accidents or adverse events taking place. Surgeons and other healthcare professionals can learn from aviation's rigorous approach to the role of human factors (HF) in such events, and how we can minimise them. Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) reports show that fatal accidents are frequently caused by pilots flying outside their own personal limits, those of the aircraft or environment. Similarly, patient morbidity or mor…

Application of the FIA score to German rescue helicopter accidents to predict fatalities in Helicopter Emergency Medical Systems (HEMS) crashes.

BACKGROUND: In the past several decades, multiple studies have examined factors influencing occupant survival in aviation crashes, but only a few have addressed this question in Helicopter Emergency Medical Systems (HEMS) accidents. The four-point FIA Score is a valid tool to measure fatality risk in aviation crashes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to analyze the performance of the FIA Score when applied to German HEMS accidents, and to determine the prognostic value for fatalities and for survival. METHODS: The FIA Score uses three parameters (F=fire; I=Instrument meteorologica
