We have shown that homocysteinemic rabbits have altered fibrinogen that forms fibrin clots with increased resistance to fibrinolysis. Homocysteine thiolactone is a metabolite of homocysteine (Hcys) that can react with amines and introduce a new sulfhydryl group into proteins. Recent evidence suggests that Hcys thiolactone-lysine adducts form in vivo. We have shown that in vitro reaction of Hcys thiolactone with human fibrinogen (Hcys-fibrinogen) alters fibrinogen function in a manner similar to that in homocysteinemic rabbits. Several naturally-occurring mutations that introduce a new cysteine

Hypoalbuminemia is common in patients with heart failure, and this condition becomes more prevalent with increasing age and illness. Hypoalbuminemia is thought to result mainly from malnutrition, inflammation and cachexia. Other causal factors include hemodilution, liver dysfunction, protein-losing enteropathy, increased transcapillary escape rate, and nephrotic syndrome. According to Starling's law, low plasma oncotic pressure related to hypoalbuminemia induces a fluid shift from the intravascular to the interstitial space, and there is now clinical evidence that hypoalbuminemia facilitates t

Generalized edema is one of the most important complications in patients with nephrotic syndrome. Diuretics like furosemide are the first choice for reducing the edema. Hypo-albuminemia reduces the effect of furosemide, and thus, this drug is co-administered with albumin to reinforce the therapeutic effect and for the correction of reduced oncotic pressure. The aim of this study was to compare urine volume and 24-hour sodium levels after using furosemide alone versus using furosemide along with albumin in patients with nephrotic syndrome. In a randomized clinical trial, ten patients with nephr

Over the past decades, albumin has emerged as a versatile carrier for therapeutic and diagnostic agents, primarily for diagnosing and treating diabetes, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and infectious diseases. Market approved products include fatty acid derivatives of human insulin or the glucagon-like-1 peptide (Levemir(®) and Victoza(®)) for treating diabetes, the taxol albumin nanoparticle Abraxane(®) for treating metastatic breast cancer which is also under clinical investigation in further tumor indications, and (99m)Tc-aggregated albumin (Nanocoll(®) and Albures(®)) for diagnosing cancer an

AIMS: To explore whether fluid resuscitation with normal saline or 4% albumin is associated with differential changes in routine clinical coagulation tests.
DESIGN: Substudy from a large double-blind randomised controlled trial, the SAFE (Saline versus Albumin Fluid Evaluation) study.
SETTING: Three general intensive care units.
PATIENTS: Cohort of 687 critically ill patients.
INTERVENTION: We randomly allocated patients to receive either 4% human albumin or normal saline for fluid resuscitation, and collected demographic and haematological data.
METHODS AND MAIN RESULTS: Albumin was admi

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this investigation were (i) to determine the rate and extent of rosiglitazone transfer across term human placenta, and (ii) to determine the effect of human serum albumin (HSA) on rosiglitazone and glyburide transfer and distribution.
METHODS: These aims were achieved by utilizing the technique of dual perfusion of placental lobule (DPPL). Each hypoglycemic drug was coperfused with the marker compound antipyrine (AP). In each experiment, the [3H]-isotope of the hypoglycemic drug and the [14C]-isotope of AP were added to enhance the detection limits of each drug. Human s

The orthopedic prosthesis used to substitute damaged natural joints are lubricated by a pseudosynovial fluid that contains biological macromolecules with potential boundary lubrication properties. Proteins are some of those macromolecules whose role in the lubrication process is not yet completely understood. In a previous work, we investigated the influence of the presence of albumin, the major synovial protein, upon the tribological behavior of three of the most used pairs of artificial joint materials: ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) against counterfaces of alumina, CoCrMo

In conclusion, in the course of patients with advanced liver disease there are several indications for institution of intravenous albumin. These include: a) enhancement of diuretic effect on mobilization of ascites fluid, b) prevention of post-paracentesis circulatory dysfunction after total/large volume paracentesis, c) prevention of hepatorenal syndrome in patients affected with SBP, and d) administration of albumin in combination with vasoconstrictor drugs as the only effective therapy for hepatorenal syndrome. Albumin is relatively inexpensive and can be given in an outpatient setting.

Adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on nanosized magnetic particles (Fe(3)O(4)) was carried out in the presence of carbodiimide. The equilibrium and kinetics of the adsorption process were studied. Nanosized magnetic particles (Fe(3)O(4)) were prepared by the chemical precipitation method using Fe2+, Fe3+ salts, and ammonium hydroxide under a nitrogen atmosphere. Characterizations of magnetic particles were carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

OBJECTIVES: This study explores clinical and laboratory abnormalities that contribute to the prevalence of bone fractures in frail and control elderly patients, to ascertain factors that relate to bone strength and fragility.
METHODS: Patients were selected as free from renal failure and not taking supplements or medications that affect their magnesium status, and categorized according to their underlying diseases, sex and age, and evaluated by tests of bone strength.
RESULTS: Findings, differentiating elderly patients on the basis of their magnesium, calcium, serum albumin, body mass, bone

We describe the case of a 30-year-old man with a severe autoimmune disease characterized by cryoglobulinaemia, pulmonary hypertension, Raynaud's phenomenon, lymphadenopathy, and glomerulonephritis. Despite initial remission following autologous stem cell transplantation, his disease relapsed and he died from pulmonary hypertension. At presentation the patient had hypergammaglobulinaemia and a number of autoantibodies, including rheumatoid factor (1:10240). The most striking feature was the extremely high level of cryoglobulins. The cryoprecipitate consisted of polyclonal IgM, IgG and albumin.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: It was previously reported that topical ketamine inhibits albumin extravasation in a rat chemical peritonitis model. Using the same model, the present study investigated whether intravenous ketamine inhibited this extravasation.
METHODS: Twenty-four rats anaesthetized with pentobarbital (75 mg kg(-1)) were randomly assigned to two groups: ketamine and a 0.9% NaCl (saline) group (n = 12 each). Ketamine 1% or saline 0.1 mL kg(-1) min(-1) was given intravenously for 60 min to the respective group. After the abdomen had been opened, peritonitis was elicited by topically

Previous papers have reported lower serum albumin levels in patients with schizophrenia. In the present study, the relationships between serum albumin levels and subtypes of schizophrenia, physical violence and suicide attempts were investigated. A review of medical charts over a 1-year period was carried out in a population of 213 Taiwanese psychiatric inpatients that included 106 patients with schizophrenia. The collected data included age, bodyweight, height, serum albumin levels and routine blood biochemistry examinations. These data were compared with data from a healthy control group (n

BACKGROUND: We characterized the neovascularization that follows the intracorneal injection of bovine albumin (BA) in rabbits as a model of corneal angiogenesis.
METHODS: New Zealand white rabbits received intracorneal injections of phosphate-buffered saline with and without various amounts of BA. The rabbits were co-sensitized or pre-sensitized by intramuscular BA or were not sensitized. The corneal vascular response was quantified by ranking photographs taken periodically after the injection.
RESULTS: In pre-sensitized animals, blood vessels were apparent within 4 days and reached maximum
