[Morphology and pathogenesis of visceral manifestations of chronic alcoholism].

Chronic alcoholism is accompanied by systemic involvement of the internal organs. Clinico-morphological forms of chronic alcoholism are distinguished on the basis of the prevailing organ pathology, Morphological data are presented, and pathogenesis of the lesions of the liver, heart, pancreas, and kidneys in patients with chronic alcoholism is analysed. The hepatic form may present alcoholic dystrophy, hepatitis or cirrhosis which are stages of progressing hepatopathy. The toxic and metabolic effect of ethanol is important in the pathogenesis of liver lesion. The cardiac form is characterized …

[Alcoholism, polyneuropathy, and liver disease. A prospective electrophysiologic study].

A prospective clinical and electrophysiologic study was performed in 50 alcoholic patients in order to assess the incidence and clinical manifestations of alcoholic polyneuropathy, the value of the electrophysiologic parameters studied, and the influence of liver disease on the appearance of neuropathy. The proposed criteria for polyneuropathy were fulfilled by 24% of the patients. Abolition of the Achillean reflexes was the most frequent clinical finding, while reduced amplitude of muscular potential was the most sensitive electrophysiologic parameter. There were no differences in alcohol con

Visual averaged evoked responses in patients suffering from alcoholism.

26 alcoholic patients were investigated by means of visual averaged evoked responses (VAER) and the proneness to augment or to reduce the amplitude of VAER with increasing stimulus intensity was determined. The alcoholic patients were compared to a group of 40 patients with reactio neurotico-depressiva and a group of 28 healthy volunteers. The patients with alcoholism were found to be augmenters more often than might be expected from chance (22 of 26 patients) and these patients also differed significantly from both the other groups. The augmenter tendency, regarded as a relatively stable pers…

[Malignant hyperthermia, chronic alcoholism and tubular aggregates (author's transl)].

A 24-year-old chronic alcoholic survived malignant hyperthermia which developed in connection with maxillo-facial operation. Electron-microscopic investigations of muscle biopsies disclosed so called tubular aggregates. The possible relations between these structures and the occurrence of malignant hyperthermia on the basis of an alcoholic myopathy are discussed. People suffering from idiopathic recurrent myoglobinuria have to be regarded as patients-at-risk.

Gut Microbiome Dysbiosis in Alcoholism: Consequences for Health and Recovery.

Since the mid 1980's, the impact of gastrointestinal (GI) microbiome changes during alcohol use disorder has been an area of significant interest. This work has resulted in the identification of specific changes in the abundance of certain members of the GI microbiome and the role these changes play in a variety of alcohol related disorders (i.e. alcoholic liver disease). Interestingly, some findings suggest a possible role for the GI microbiome in alcohol addiction or withdrawal. Unfortunately, there is a significant gap in knowledge in this area. Here we describe differences in the GI microb

[G6PD: a homozygous deficiency revealed by macrocytosis after acute alcoholism].

G6PD deficiency is one of the most common genetic disorders in the world, affecting more than 400 million people. The large majority of patients do not have anemia of chronic hemolysis but are subject to acute haemolytic anemia after exposure to triggering factor, usually eating fava beans, exposure to oxidative drugs or acidosis. We report the case of a 53-year-old woman that had an acute haemolytic anemia revealed by abnormally rapid increase of MCV that eventually led to discover G6PD deficiency. As investigation did not identify any common triggering factor, we discuss the involvement of t

Alcoholism and nutrition: a review of vitamin supplementation and treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This is a review of the research on the effectiveness of vitamin supplementation for alcoholism and alcohol-related illnesses. The focus is on research, both clinical and basic on alcohol treatment and nutritional effectiveness of these vital nutrients. RECENT FINDINGS: Most of the research involves basic experiments exploring the impact of vitamin depletion or deficits on physiological systems, especially liver and brain, in rodents. These often include behavioral measures that use cognitive, learning/memory and motivation experiments that model clinical studies. These pro…

Maternal alcoholism and neonatal hypoxia-ischemia: Neuroprotection by stilbenoid polyphenols.

The impact of maternal nutrition on neurodevelopment and neonatal neuroprotection is a research topic with increasing interest. Maternal die … eonate rat brain damages, sensorimotor and cognitive impairments, in a context of moderate maternal alcoholism. Both stilbenoid polyphenols, trans-resveratrol (RSV - 0.15 mg/kg/day), and its hydroxylated analog, trans-piceatannol (PIC - 0.15 mg/kg/day), were administered in the drinking water, containing or not alcohol (0.5 g/kg/day). Chronic alcoholism treatment in custodial facilities: Ukraine's experience during independence.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Chronic alcoholism is a powerful catalyst for commission of many serious and particularly grave crimes - intentional homicide, bodily damage, robbery, plundering, traffic safety violations that led to fatalities. The vast majority of these offenders are sentenced to imprisonment. Although independent Ukraine refused their compulsory treatment, such experience, unfortunately, did not improve the situation. This will require finding new ways of solving the alcoholism problem that may be of interest to both post-Soviet countries and developed democracy countries. The aim …

Shared genetic factors influence amygdala volumes and risk for alcoholism.

Alcohol abuse and dependence (alcohol use disorders, AUDs) are associated with brain shrinkage. Subcortical structures including the amygdala, hippocampus, ventral striatum, dorsal striatum, and thalamus subserve reward functioning and may be particularly vulnerable to alcohol-related damage. These structures may also show pre-existing deficits impacting the development and maintenance of AUD. It remains unclear whether there are common genetic features underlying both subcortical volumes and AUD. In this study, structural brain images were acquired from 872 Mexican-American individuals from e
