Seroprevalence of West Nile virus antibodies in equids in the North-East of Algeria and detection of virus circulation in 2014.

West Nile fever (WNF) is a viral disease of wild birds transmitted by mosquitoes. Humans and equids can also be affected and suffer from meningoencephalitis. In Algeria, since the 1994 epidemic, no data on WNV circulation was available until 2012. In September 2012, a fatal human case of WNV neuro-invasive infection occurred in Jijel province. This study describes the first seroprevalence study of West Nile virus (WNV) antibodies conducted in the equine population in Algeria. During 2014, serum samples were collected from 293 equids (222 donkeys and 71 horses) asymptomatic and unvaccinated for…

Prevalence of coeliac disease in diabetic children and their first- degree relatives in west Algeria: screening with serological markers.

Atypical and relatively silent forms of coeliac disease (CD) have been described in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of CD-IDDM with serological markers and to investigate the presence of CD in the IDDM first-degree relatives. During 1993-94 we explored 116 IDDM patients reported as new cases and 381 first-degree relatives of IDDM patients. Determination of IgA and IgG antigliadin antibodies (AGA) and IgA antiendomysium antibodies (AEA) was made. Jejunal biopsy was performed in symptomatic patients or in those with positive serological markers,

[Hydatid cyst sampling by FTA Card method for characterizing Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato in Algeria. Preliminary results].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Cystic echinococcosis is highly endemic in Algeria and constitutes a major socio-economic problem. Typing the species of the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato complex circulating in cattle requires the use of a hydatid cyst sampling method adapted to difficult field conditions (high heat and humidity, long transport time). The FTA Card method currently constitutes an effective means of preserving biological samples before their molecular analysis. In the present study, the FTA Card method was used in the collection of hydatid cysts to identify the species of E. gr…

Chemical pollution impairs the health of fish species and fishery activities along the Algeria coastline, Mediterranean Sea.

Chronic exposure to multiple pollutants affects aquatic organisms, even at low concentrations, and can impair fishery activities along marine coastlines. The bioavailability of toxic metals and the presence of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in both water and sediment can explain the worst-case scenario of fish health and fishery production decline along the Algeria coastline. The hepatosomatic index (HIS), gonadosomatic index (GSI), and condition factor (K) in the studied species from the Algiers, Bou Ismail, and Zemmouri bays are the first indicators of the poor environmen…
