The ingredients previously reported to cause protective glove allergy are presented and evaluated for strength of evidence. Allergens that have caused both delayed hypersensitivity and contact urticaria are considered for rubber, plastic, leather, and textile gloves. The current guidelines regarding glove manufacture are described. A list of materials confirmed by the industry to be used in glove production is presented together with a suggested series for investigating patients with delayed type hypersensitivity and contact urticaria secondary to glove use.

Over and above the information obtained with screening series of allergens, supplemental allergens can provide additional insight as to which substances a patient has become sensitized. These allergens are commercially available and are sold as a series of related materials. Twelve such series were used over a period of 8.5 years. This report investigates the value of each series in providing additional information not provided by the use of routine screening series of allergens. The most useful additional allergens are identified.

The leukocytes from sixty patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis were tested for histamine release in response to environmental and food antigens. Eighteen patients (30 percent of the population studied) were atopic, and this history of respiratory allergy was confirmed by an in vitro histamine release assay. The nonatopic patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis had a significantly higher incidence of in vitro histamine release to foods than did control subjects. Immunological studies of forty-three patients with cystic fibrosis showed that positive prick tests to at least one common allergen were obtained in 70%, to multiple allergens in 28% and to A. fumigatus in 50%.
