Humanitarian emergencies result in a breakdown of critical health-care services and often make vulnerable communities dependent on external agencies for care. In resource-constrained settings, this may occur against a backdrop of extreme poverty, malnutrition, insecurity, low literacy and poor infrastructure. Under these circumstances, providing food, water and shelter and limiting communicable disease outbreaks become primary concerns. Where effective and safe vaccines are available to mitigate the risk of disease outbreaks, their potential deployment is a key consideration in meeting emergen

It seems obvious that as the benefits of cooperation increase, the share of cooperators in the population should also increase. It is well known that positive assortment between cooperative types, for instance in spatially structured populations, provide better conditions for the evolution of cooperation than complete mixing. This study demonstrates that, assuming positive assortment, under most conditions higher cooperation benefits also increase the share of cooperators. On the other hand, under a specified range of payoff values, when at least two payoff parameters are modified, the reverse

The sustainability of body donation programs is contingent not only on cultural and religious frameworks that motivate altruistic giving, but also on the institutional practices that honor donors and maintain public trust. In Sri Lanka, Theravada Buddhist principles of dana (generosity) and karuna (compassion) underpin a well-established culture of body donation. The formal memorial ceremonies have served as the conventional expression of institutional gratitude to body donors. The Faculty of Medicine (FOM) at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka (WUSL), however, faced successive and compounding ad

BACKGROUND: There is a critical concern for adolescent health in the Eastern Mediterranean region especially during humanitarian crises. This study emphasises not only the need for measuring key health indicators but also how to collect the information effectively, particularly in the West Bank. These efforts will guide evidence-based policies and interventions for this population.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This mixed-methods study aimed to determine the perceived relevance and feasibility of collecting a set of adolescent health indicators in the West Bank. Stakeholders filled out a question

BACKGROUND: Sri Lanka (SL) is a multiethnic nation that has endured a decades-long civil war and a devastating tsunami. These events led to … ience and healing. METHODS: We will implement a 10-week school-based program - Leadership, Empathy, Altruism, Personal Growth, and Social Responsibility (LEAPS) - to cultivate character strengths in youth. The program will be culturally and historically tailored to the SL context, and will integrate key tenets from the country’s four major religions to pro …

The 2023 Gaza conflict precipitated a collapse of essential health services, exposing the extreme fragility of chronic disease care in humanitarian crises. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for more than 70% of deaths in Palestine, yet the management of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and renal failure has been critically disrupted by the destruction of infrastructure, blockade of medical supplies, and mass displacement. This work synthesizes recent peer-reviewed literature, WHO and UN reports, and field assessments from 2023 to 2025 examining the continuity of NCD car

BACKGROUND: Psychological wellbeing is a critical component of overall health, particularly for healthcare professionals who face high-stress environments. Volunteering has been associated with positive mental health outcomes, yet limited research has explored its impact on specialized medical missions. This study investigates the psychological effects of participating in a cochlear implant humanitarian mission on healthcare professionals, assessing changes in their mental wellbeing before and after the experience.
METHODS: A descriptive, questionnaire-based study was conducted on volunteers

Psychopathic traits are often investigated within the individual, while most traits come to expression within the interpersonal context. Low social communion might even be an important overlooked core feature of psychopathy. This raises the question how psychopathic (i.e., Grandiose-Manipulative, Callous-Unemotional, and Irresponsible-Impulsive) traits affect the tendency to show prosocial behavior, and whether peer problems explain this relationship. Besides, the effects of gender on these subrelations are explored. In total, 541 community adolescents and emerging adults (26.4 % men; 16-25 ye

This study seeks to characterize how non-directed living kidney donors use media and informational resources over the course of their kidney donation journey. We conducted semi-structured interviews with non-directed donors (NDDs) who initiated kidney transplant chains. Interview transcripts were reviewed and references to media or informational resources were classified by type and pattern of use. More than half (57%) of NDDs reported that an identifiable media or informational resource resulted in their initial interest in donation. Two-thirds (67%) of NDDs cited the influence of stories and

BACKGROUND: General surgery training programs face declining case volume and diversity. We wanted to determine if resident participation in international surgical missions would increase exposure to cases underrepresented in our program case mix.
METHODS: Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education program data from 2008 to 2011 (University of Medicine and Dentistry-New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ) were analyzed to identify categories where volume was below national average. This was compared with case logs from 3 missions conducted by International Surgical Health Initiatives

In late October 2014, Ebola virus disease (Ebola) was diagnosed in a humanitarian aid worker who recently returned from West Africa to New York City (NYC). The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) actively monitored three close contacts of the patient and 114 health care personnel. No secondary cases of Ebola were detected. In collaboration with local and state partners, DOHMH had developed protocols to respond to such an event beginning in July 2014. These protocols included safely transporting a person at the first report of symptoms to a local hospital prepared to treat a pat

OBJECTIVES: Kidney donation from a living donor to an unknown recipient has been legal in the UK since 2006. Yet there is little research in … with health care services. Findings are discussed with reference to the wider literature on UKD and altruism and in relation to implications for clinical practice.
STATEMENT OF CONTRIBUTION: What is already known on this subject? Unspecified living kidney donation is an under-researched area with only three research papers published worldwide that report …

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to examine the reasoning behind donation decisions of donor-eligible patients' next-of-kin. Cases … onal exhaustion also played a significant role.
CONCLUSIONS: Reasons to donate or not are complex. Altruism, although important, does not seem to be sufficient to motivate organ donation. Knowing patient's preferences was a stronger influence overall. Moreover, certain reasons were highly correlated with each other. Supportive emotional care for the famil …

In many transplant centers, organ retrieval from altruistic strangers is accepted practice; patients use Internet Web sites and other public media to locate strangers willing to give them an organ. It is argued that altruistic strangers should be permitted to select the recipients of their organs because 1) personal relationships are morally important; 2) it increases the number of available organs; and 3) no one is hurt by the process. Nonetheless, using public media to obtain organs may undermine equity in organ allocation. Organs donated by altruistic strangers do not go necessarily to pati

INTRODUCTION: The informal use of instant messaging applications for healthcare consultations is rapidly increasing in low- and middle-incom … gital channel for paediatric consultations. Access was mediated through social capital and provider altruism, compensating for systemic barriers. Clinical practice involved 'digital auscultation' via multimedia, with providers and parents jointly negotiating diagnostic uncertainty and informal triage thresholds. While this approach enhanced access and conv …
