Bone resorption after tooth extraction can compromise alveolar ridge volume and limit implant-supported rehabilitation. Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) using xenografts and resorbable collagen membranes has been proposed to reduce post-extraction dimensional changes; however, outcomes may vary depending on site characteristics and clinical conditions. The objective of this clinical case was to evaluate multidimensional ridge changes following alveolar preservation using a porcine pericardium collagen membrane and bovine bone xenograft prior to implant placement, assessed by cone beam compute

The ultimate dental implant challenge is reconstruction of the severely resorbed maxilla, especially in patients with long-term edentulism or multiple previous failed attempts at dental implant placement and full-arch implant rehabilitation. Before implant dentistry, complete dentures, which are limited by poor retention and lack of support that the alveolar ridge offers in atrophic maxillae, were the only option for these patients. Pterygoid implants are now a valid and valuable resource for the rehabilitation of the posterior atrophic maxilla. This chapter will cover pterygoid implant surgic

PURPOSE: To evaluate the dimensional changes in the alveolar crest after buccal overbuilding was performed prior to tooth extraction in a dog model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: At the test sites, alveolar crest overbuilding was performed on the buccal aspect of the distal root of the third premolar using xenograft covered with a collagen membrane. No treatment was applied at the control sites. After 3 months, the distal roots of both third premolars were extracted and implants were immediately placed into the alveolus, allowing nonsubmerged healing. After 3 months, biopsy samples were collected.

AIM: Although alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) procedures appear to limit bone resorption after dental extraction, long-term outcomes remain limited. The objective of this prospective case series was to evaluate the long-term hard and soft tissue changes after ARP procedure in the aesthetic area, using deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) and saddle connective tissue graft.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients were subjected to ARP and impressions and CT scans were taken at baseline and 3 months. After 5 to 7 years, a secondary long-term clinical and radiological analysis was carried

BACKGROUND: Following tooth extraction, the alveolar ridge will undergo dimensional changes. This change may complicate the subsequent restorative procedure when oral implants are chosen. "Alveolar ridge preservation" has been assessed in various studies.
AIM: To evaluate the more recent studies on this topic and to explore new insights under this topic.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Animal studies and clinical studies have addressed different techniques.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Implants placed into the fresh extraction sockets do not prevent the resorption of the alveolar bone. Simultaneous guide

BACKGROUND: Vascular injury to the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) during lateral sinus floor augmentation is a recognized surgical complication, yet data on PSAA anatomy in severely atrophic edentulous maxillae remain scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, location patterns, and morphometric characteristics of the PSAA in this specific population using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
METHODS: Preoperative CBCT scans of 121 patients (242 sinuses) with severely atrophic posterior maxillae (residual ridge height ≤ 5 mm) were retrospectively analyzed. PSAA location

The aim of this study was to clinically determine the thickness of masticatory mucosa in the hard palate and tuberosity as potential donor sites for subepitelial grafts for ridge augmentation procedures of small and moderate alveolar ridge defects to improve aesthetics of a pontic area of fixed partial dentures. In 102 periodontally healthy fully dentate subjects the thickness of mucosa was assessed by bone sounding with a periodontal probe. Twenty measurement points were defined, 18 on hard palate located on 3 lines running at different distances parallel to gingival margin and 2 on tuberosit

The autogenous bone ring technique is among the approaches for vertical alveolar ridge augmentation, and this technique can enable simultaneous implantation. However, the outcomes can be compromised due to donor site morbidity, shifting of the bone ring graft positioning, and inaccurate implant placement. In recent decades, dynamic navigation systems have been introduced into the field of implantology, allowing the accuracy of outcomes to be improved. This Technical Note describes the use of dynamic navigation to guide bone ring surgery, which is expected to enable more precise and predictable…

This randomized controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of titanium-prepared platelet-rich fibrin (T-PRF) for alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) compared with leukocyte and platelet rich fibrin (L-PRF) and spontaneous healing. Thirty single-rooted teeth requiring extraction were randomly assigned to one of three groups (ARP with T-PRF, ARP with L-PRF, and spontaneous healing) using a flapless, atraumatic extraction approach. Radiographic measurements (bone width, height, and density) were obtained pre-operatively and at four months via OnDemand3D software, and clinical parameters-including post

An urgent issue is the preservation or reconstruction of the volume of bone tissue in planning and surgical treatment in the fields of medicine, such as traumatology, orthopedics, maxillofacial surgery and dentistry. After tooth extraction, resorption of the bone tissue of the alveolar crest of the jaws occurs, which must either be further eliminated by performing additional operations or using osteoplastic material for socket preservation at the extraction stage. Background and Objectives: The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of various osteoplastic materials used to preserve the v

The objective of this randomized clinical trial (RCT) was to assess the effectiveness of electrospun chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CS/PVA) nanofibrous scaffolds in preserving the alveolar ridge and enhancing bone remodeling following tooth extraction when compared to a control group. In this split RCT, 24 human alveolar sockets were randomly assigned to two groups, with 12 sockets receiving CS/PVA nanofibrous scaffold grafts (test group) and 12 left to heal by secondary intention as the control group. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was performed at two different time points: immediately af

Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) is indicated to attenuate anatomic and physiologic changes following tooth extraction. A properly contoured ovate pontic placed immediately into an extraction socket may be adequate to maintain alveolar ridge architecture for improved esthetic results. This prospective clinical study evaluated the ability of immediately placed ovate pontics in conjunction with ARP to attenuate postextraction tissue dimensional changes in the esthetic zone and maintain alveolar ridge contour. Ten patients (11 sites) completed the study. All subjects received a combination of so

Immediate placement of dental implants in fresh extraction sockets is associated with remaining voids around the implants and often a partial dehiscence or thinning of the facial alveolar plate. Nine patients had Bioplant HTR synthetic bone used as a ridge preservation/augmentation material in conjunction with immediate placement of 10 implants. Hard tissue replacement (HTR) was used to fill the remaining socket void and enhance the facial ridge width, and the wound closed as completely as possible. Dental implants were uncovered at approximately 6 months. Measurements taken of the internal so
