Rickettsia parkeri genetic diversity from three different hard tick species (family: Ixodidae).

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia parkeri sensu stricto, a causative agent of spotted fever rickettsiosis, is spread via the bite of infected ticks within the Amblyomma maculatum complex group. In the United States of America (USA), Am. maculatum Koch, 1844 is the primary vector for R. parkeri; however, Amblyomma americanum (Linnaeus, 1758) and Dermacentor variabilis (Say, 1821) have demonstrated potential to transmit R. parkeri under laboratory conditions. In this study, we investigate the genetic differences between R. parkeri detected in Am. maculatum, the primary enzootic vector, and potential second…

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on birds migrating to the island of Ponza, Italy, and the tick-borne pathogens they carry.

Seasonal migration of birds between breeding and wintering areas can facilitate the spread of tick species and tick-borne diseases. In this study, 151 birds representing 10 different bird species were captured on Ponza Island, an important migratory stopover off the western coast of Italy and screened for tick infestation. Ticks were collected and identified morphologically. Morphological identification was supported through sequencing a fragment of the 16S mitochondrial gene. In total, 16 captured birds carried ticks from four tick species: Hyalomma rufipes (n = 14), Amblyomma variegatum (n =…

Tick responses to diverse chemical attractants to enhance tick surveillance methods' efficacy.

Amblyomma maculatum Koch (Acari: Ixodidae), Ixodes scapularis Say, and Dermacentor variabilis Say are three hard-bodied ticks responsible for vectoring pathogens that cause most human tick-borne diseases in the United States of America (USA). Tick surveillance is critical to elucidate high-risk areas for targeted vector control and public health interventions. Despite tick-borne diseases having a higher annual incidence compared to mosquito-borne diseases in the USA, tick traps used for surveillance are grossly under-developed compared to the suite of sophisticated mosquito traps available on …

Epidemiology of ticks submitted from human hosts in Alberta, Canada (2000-2019).

ABSTRACTThe geographic range and occurrence of tick species is dynamic. This has important public health implications due to important tick … ntly over time (p < 0.0001). Dermacentor ticks were the most abundant genus, followed by Ixodes and Amblyomma. There was a significant decrease in the proportion of Dermacentor ticks between 2013 and 2019 (p = 0.02), with a corresponding increase in the proportion of Ixodes ticks over the same time (p = 0.04). No statistically significant change in seasonal …

Two Atypical Cases of Tick Bites: A Fully Engorged Tick and Multiple Ticks.

Ticks have a cosmopolitan distribution and, as such, are also found in Japan. Ticks are typically ectoparasites of wild animals, however, humans can also be bitten when visiting environments inhabited by ticks. Herein, we describe two cases with atypical tick bites. Case 1 was an elderly Japanese male patient who presented with a fully engorged tick measuring 20 × 17 × 8 mm; it is rare for ticks to attain a length of 20 mm. Case 2 was an elderly Japanese female with severe dementia who presented with multiple tick bites, which is rare, after going missing for 6 days before being found in a den

Seroepidemiology of Rickettsia typhi, spotted fever group rickettsiae, and Coxiella burnetti infection in pregnant women from urban Tanzania.

Immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) testing was performed on sera drawn from 150 pregnant women in the port city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Prevalence of antibodies to Rickettsia typhi was 28%, higher than in any of the 12 other African countries in which serosurveys using IFA testing have been performed. Seroprevalence of antibodies to spotted fever group rickettsiae antigens was 25.3%, comparable with that found in other sub-Saharan countries endemic for Amblyomma ticks. Only 4.7% of women were seropositive for Coxiella burnetii.

Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness: Florida's Lyme Disease Variant.

Southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI) is an emerging zoonotic disease causing an annular rash with central clearing that is almost identical to erythema migrans seen in Lyme disease. It is spread by Amblyomma americanum tick bite. Although it is still debatable, this zoonotic disease is thought to be caused by Borrelia lonestari spirochete. At this time, there is no approved diagnostic modality nor approved treatment for such an illness. Here we describe a rare case of STARI in a 63-year-old female and shed light on the differences between STARI and Lyme disease.

Characterization of Transstadial Transmission of Rickettsia Amblyommatis in Haemaphysalis Longicornis Using Optimized Artificial Membrane Feeding System.

Ticks are blood-feeding arthropods and serve as vectors and reservoirs for diverse pathogens. Recent environmental changes have triggered the invasion of ticks into new geographical areas, prompting a public health alert for increased risk of tick-borne diseases. Amblyomma (A.) americanum (lone star tick) has emerged as the most common human-biting tick species in the eastern United States. Amblyomma americanum transmits multiple pathogens, including Rickettsia (R.) amblyommatis, the suspected cause of mild spotted fever rickettsiosis. As an invasive tick species, Haemaphysalis (H.) longicorni…

Spotted fever group rickettsiae in ixodid ticks in Oromia, Ethiopia.

In Ethiopia, information on the transmission of human zoonotic pathogens through ixodid ticks remains scarce. Detection of human bacterial pathogens in ticks collected from Louisiana black bears (Ursus americanus luteolus).

There are 4 major human-biting tick species in the northeastern United States, which include: Amblyomma americanum, Amblyomma maculatum, Dermacentor variabilis, and Ixodes scapularis. The black bear is a large mammal that has been shown to be parasitized by all the aforementioned ticks. We investigated the bacterial infections in ticks collected from Louisiana black bears (Ursus americanus subspecies luteolus). Eighty-six ticks were collected from 17 black bears in Louisiana from June 2010 to March 2011. All 4 common human-biting tick species were represented. Each tick was subjected to polyme…
