A dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT) is a rare and locally aggressive benign mixed odontogenic tumor, histologically made up of ameloblast-like epithelial islands, ghost cells, and dentin-like material. This is a highly unusual example of DGCT combined with an odontoma in a 13-year-old female patient affecting the right maxilla. Intrauterine thyroidectomies were performed on nine lambs on or about the ninety-sixth postconception day. Odontomas are considered hamartomatous lesions and are one of the two most common odontogenic tumors of the jaw. Odontomas are classified as compound or complex. Recently, ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) and ameloblastic fibro-dentinoma were reclassified as developing odontomas. The sulfate transporter gene SLC26A2 is crucial for skeletal formation, as evidenced by its role in diastrophic dysplasia, a type of skeletal dysplasia in humans. Although SLC26A2-related chondrodysplasia also affects craniofacial and tooth development, its specific role in these processes remains unclear. Reports of compound odontomas in rats are very rare. A 14-month-old adult male Sprague Dawley rat was found to have a hard mass associated with the caudal aspect of the left mandible. After 2 weeks of observation, the rat was euthanized due to the mass growing significantly in size and the rat losing >20% of its body weight. Grossly, the mass was well-circumscribed, 3.7 × 3 × 1.2 cm, hard and heterogeneously coloured white, tan and red. The mass was restricted to the mandibular bone and did not involve surrounding subcutaneous tissue. On cut surface, the mass was a similar colour and brittle.

BACKGROUND: The precise mechanism of root resorption in human primary teeth is unclear. However, research has suggested that the enamel organ and dental follicle of the successive (permanent) teeth are important for this process. This review focuses on the mechanism of root resorption.
HIGHLIGHT: Impaction of the maxillary permanent canines is occasionally seen. Computer tomography studies have shown that these canines cause root resorption in 12.5% of the neighboring central and lateral incisors. In such cases, enlargement of the radiolucent areas around the canine crowns is frequently seen.

Several authors have proposed that hypocalcemia can interfere with amelogenesis, resulting in enamel aberrations. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to study the effects of a diet-induced hypocalcemic state in young rats on enamel formation of the maxillary incisors. A systematic review of the literature from 1993 to 2011 was undertaken examining frequency data of the most common odontogenic cysts and tumors. Seven inclusion criteria were met for the paper to be incorporated. In the preliminary search 5231 papers were identified, of these 26 papers met the inclusion criteria. There were 18 297 odontogenic cysts reported. Of these there were 9982 (54.6%) radicular cysts, 3772 (20.6%) dentigerous cysts and 2145 (11.7%) keratocystic odontogenic tumors.
