Acute perturbation of the hippocampus, one of the connector hubs in the brain, is a key step in the pathophysiological cascade of transient global amnesia (TGA). We tested the hypothesis that network efficiency, meaning the efficiency of information exchange over a network, is impaired during the acute stage of TGA. Graph theoretical analysis was applied to resting-state EEG data collected from 21 patients with TGA. The EEG data were obtained twice, once during the acute stage (< 24 hours after symptom onset) and once during the resolved stage (> 2 months after symptom onset) of TGA. Character

A 67-year-old right-handed woman experienced a sudden anterograde and retrograde short-term memory deficit that recovered on the next day. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a spotty high-intensity lesion in the left putamen in the diffusion-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images. Transient global amnesia due to lacunar infarction of the left putamen was diagnosed. Transient global amnesia is characterized by a sudden onset of anterograde amnesia that disappears within 24 hours. The cause of transient global amnesia is still uncertain. Some studies with MRI showed small l

BACKGROUND: Psychological stress has been associated with transient global amnesia (TGA). Whether a cancer diagnosis, a severely stressful life event, is associated with subsequent risk of TGA has not been studied.
METHODS: Based on the Swedish Cancer Register and Patient Register, we conducted a prospective cohort study including 5,365,608 Swedes at age 30 and above during 2001-2009 to examine the relative risk of TGA among cancer patients, as compared to cancer-free individuals. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) derived from Poisson regression were used a

Few community-based studies determined the incidence of transient global amnesia (TGA), with annual incidence rates between 2.9 and 10.4/100,000. Data on sex distribution of TGA are discrepant. Aim of this study was to determine the incidence of TGA in Merano, province of Bolzano, Northern Italy. Cases were identified from hospital discharge diagnoses of all the Departments of the general hospital of Merano and neighboring towns. Patients fulfilling internationally accepted diagnostic criteria for TGA and residing in Merano were included. Crude, age- and sex-specific incidence rates were compu

Background. Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a syndrome of sudden, unexplained isolated short-term memory loss. In the majority of TGA cases, no causes can be identified and neuroimaging, CSF studies and EEG are usually normal. We present a patient with TGA associated with a small acute infarct at the cingulate gyrus. Case Report. The patient, a 62 year-old man, developed two episodes of TGA. He had hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. He was found to have an acute ischemic stroke of small size (15 mm of maximal diameter) at the right cerebral cingulate gyrus diagnosed on brain magnetic res

BACKGROUND: Hippocampal sulcal cavities (HSC) have been speculated to contribute to a higher vulnerability of memory pathways and might be a possible etiological factor in transient global amnesia (TGA). Therefore, we evaluated the influence of HSC on cognitive long-term outcome in TGA-patients.
METHODS: Fourteen otherwise healthy patients with the clinical syndrome of TGA in their history underwent a high-resolution magnetic resolution imaging and a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery. The neuropsychological control group consisted of 15 healthy subjects and was balanced for age, s

Little is known about the pathophysiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) and how it is related to epilepsy. We report here five typical episodes of TGA, each occurring several years after surgery for epilepsy. In all cases, patients were seizure-free after a surgery consisting of anterior temporal lobectomy for refractory medial temporal lobe epilepsy associated with hippocampal sclerosis (n = 4) or linked with a dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour (n = 1). Investigations, including MRI or CT scan, angio-MRI or echocardiogram or vascular echo Doppler, excluded a vascular origin. Using a

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is defined as a selective, or almost selective, deficit of the memory that appears suddenly and lasts less than 24 hours. The aetiopathogenesis of this syndrome remains unknown and different theories have been put forward about its epileptic or ischemic origin, or the relationship that exists with the neuronal depression that is produced in migraine. A number of triggering factors have been described, including the taking of distinct pharmaceutical preparations.
CASE REPORT: We report the cases of two patients with a history of migraines who suffer

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an inability to form new memories. The pathophysiology and cause of TGA have not been defined. We examined the changes of internal jugular venous flow patterns in 21 patients with TGA and 21 age-matched and sex-matched controls using duplex ultrasonography during two Valsalva manoeuvres (blocking venous return through the superior vena cava). During both manoeuvres a retrograde flow component was seen significantly more frequently in the TGA group than in the controls. Ten patients reported Valsalva-like activities preceding TGA. In these patients a retrograde

A 43-year-old man developed severe global amnesia with uncinate fits and a single generalised convulsion 10 days after a febrile infection. CSF pleocytosis and serological findings indicated an acute Epstein-Barr virus encephalitis. All of the symptoms cleared within 2 weeks except for occasional generalised seizures. This seems to be the first observation of Epstein-Barr virus encephalitis presenting predominantly as transient global amnesia.

TGA is a clearly recognisable clinical syndrome with many and varied aetiologies, the most ubiquitous being transient cerebral ischaemia. This entity is probably much more common than the literature suggests, many patients not coming to the attention of a physician due to the transient nature of the isolated memory defect and the risk of recurrence being low, it is of interest that many of the original patients described tended to be the more prominent members of the community, e.g. physicians and relatives of physicians, perhaps suggesting that the occurrence of TGA in such a person is less l

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a well-characterized neurological syndrome primarily affecting adults over the age of 50. It is marked by the sudden onset of anterograde amnesia with repetitive questioning while other cognitive functions remain intact. To date, only a few pediatric cases of TGA have been documented. Here we present the case of a previously healthy 9-year-old girl who developed sudden-onset anterograde amnesia, manifesting with repetitive stereotyped questions and temporal disorientation consistent with the "broken record" phenomenon. The patient's neurological examination an

BACKGROUND: PURPOSE: Although many studies have investigated the relationship between transient global amnesia (TGA) and migraine, to date, no meta-analysis has confirmed the existence and size of their association.
METHODOLOGY: Literature search involved MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL and PsycINFO. Observational controlled studies including TGA patients (Caplan, Hodges and Warlow) were retrieved. Quality evaluation was based on the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. The prevalence of migraine was compared in TGA patients vs. healthy controls (HC), as well as in TGA against TIA individuals. Data from case-con
