Moxifloxacin versus amoxicillin clavulanate in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis: a primary care experience.

In this prospective, multicentre, randomised, non-blinded phase III clinical trial, 475 adult patients with acute sinusitis received a 10-day oral regimen of either moxifloxacin (400 mg once daily) or amoxicillin clavulanate (875 mg twice daily). The primary measure of efficacy was clinical resolution. Secondary outcome measures included clinical relapse at follow-up and evaluation of patient reported outcomes. Of 471 adults comprising the intent-to-treat population (234 moxifloxacin, 237 amoxicillin/clavulanate), moxifloxacin treatment was statistically equivalent to amoxicillin/clavulanate a…

[Exploration of 112 children suspected of amoxicillin allergy. Indications and efficacy of oral provocation test].

BACKGROUND: One to 10% of treatments using betalactams, particularly synthetic penicillin, are complicated by allergic reactions, usually cutaneous, and not easily imputable to immunologic sensitization in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The aim of this study was to identify, using cutaneous and biological tests, those from a group of 112 children suspected of amoxicillin allergy (evidenced by rash) who were actually sensitized, and to confirm the absence of allergy in others by an oral provocation test (OPT) associated to a long-term survey. The cutaneous tests were made by prick test and in…

Effect of ranitidine and amoxicillin plus metronidazole on the eradication of Helicobacter pylori and the recurrence of duodenal ulcer.

BACKGROUND: Persistent infection with Helicobacter pylori is associated with the recurrence of duodenal ulcer. Whether the efficacy of bismuth therapy in reducing the rate of recurrence of duodenal ulcer is due to its antimicrobial effects on H. pylori or to a direct protective action on the mucosa is still a matter of debate. METHODS: To study the effect of the eradication of H. pylori on the recurrence of duodenal ulcer, we treated 104 patients with H. pylori infection and recurrent duodenal ulcer with either amoxicillin (750 mg three times daily) plus metronidazole (500 mg three times dail…

Effect of amoxicillin, cephalexin, and tetracycline-HCl on intestinal L-leucine transport in the rat in vivo.

By utilising an in vivo technique the effects of amoxicillin, cephalexin, and tetracycline-HCl on intestinal L-leucine absorption were studied in the rat. The results showed that amoxicillin caused a time-dependent and reversible inhibition of L-leucine transport while the inhibition induced by the other two antibiotics tested was not reversible. Light microscopic studies revealed that the three antibiotics were without effect on intestinal mucosal morphology.

[A double blind comparative study on the efficacy of S6472, cefaclor and amoxicillin, in the treatment of bacterial pneumonia].

The S6472 is a 4:6 mixture of 2 types of granules of cefaclor (CCL) coated with different films; one type of granules is soluble at low pH's and absorbed in the stomach while the other type is soluble at high pH's and absorbed in the intestine. The difference in absorption sites makes it possible to maintain blood concentrations of the drug at clinically efficient levels for a longer period of time compared with ordinary CCL. The efficacy, safety and usefulness of S6472 in the treatment of bacterial pneumonia was compared with those of ordinary CCL and of amoxicillin (AMPC) by the blind method…

[Experimental and clinical studies on BRL 25000 (clavulanic acid-amoxicillin) granules in the pediatric field].

BRL 25000 is a preparation comprising 2 parts of amoxicillin (AMPC) to 1 part of clavulanic acid (CVA). Basic and clinical studies have been performed on BRL 25000 granules in the pediatric field. The antibacterial activities of BRL 25000 and AMPC against 48 strains of E. coli isolated from patients with urinary tract infections were studied. The MICs of BRL 25000 were all below 100 micrograms/ml, except for 1 strain with MIC greater than or equal to 800 micrograms/ml. However, 19 strains (40%) were resistant to AMPC, with MICs more than 800 micrograms/ml. BRL 25000 granules were administered …

[Clinical study of amoxicillin used for treatment of infections of the lower urinary tracts (author's transl)].

The following results were obtained from treatment of 29 cases of lower urinary tract infections with amoxicillin. 1. Amoxicillin was remarkably effective in 13 cases of acute cystitis, in terms of effect according to dose and bacterial species. 2. The effective rate of amoxicillin in 10 cases of chronic cystitis amounted only to 30% due to complications and resistant bacteria. (The group given 1,500 mg/day was a little higher in the effective rate than the 750 mg/day group.) 3. Amoxicillin was low in effect against infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and hardly effective against bacteria r…
