Triphallia: the first cadaveric description of internal penile triplication: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Triphallia, a rare congenital anomaly describing the presence of three distinct penile shafts, has been reported only once in … ndings underscore the importance of meticulous anatomical dissections and may act as a resource for anatomists and those studying genitourinary anomalies. Although we can only speculate as to which functional implications this patient may have experienced, understanding such anatomical variations contributes to both knowledge of human anatomy and clinical ma …

Spigelian hernia, a case report.

INTRODUCTION & IMPORTANCE: The first clinical presentation of a hernia developing along the Spigelian line had been reported by Klinkosch. The Belgian anatomist Adriaan van der Spieghel (Adrianus Spigelius) was the first to describe the semilunar line now known as the linea Spigeli in 1645. Spigelian hernias are rare and account for 1 % to 2 % of all abdominal wall hernias. Most of these hernia occurs in the lower abdomen where posterior sheath is deficient. The hernia ring is well defined defect in the transverse aponeurosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60 year old female, presented with a palpable

Ultrasound-Guided Fasciotomies of the Deep and Superficial Posterior Leg Compartments for Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome: A Cadaveric Investigation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) is a type of leg pain related to elevated intracompartmental pressure with activity in one or more of the four compartments of the leg. Open fasciotomy is the definitive treatment for CECS but has a reported complication rate of up to 15.7% and return to full activity reported up to 16 weeks. Ultrasound-guided (USG) fasciotomy of the anterior and lateral compartments has been translated into clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: To determine the safety and feasibility of a USG fasciotomy of the deep posterior compartment (DPC) and superficial

In-vivo endoscopic visualization of patho-anatomy in painful degenerative conditions of the lumbar spine.

The degenerative processes in an aging spine have been defined traditionally only by our knowledge of the biology of disc and facet degeneration, as well as interpretation of post-mortem cryosections by forensic anatomist Wolfgang Rauschning, M.D. In this chapter, visualization of in-vivo patho-anatomy in a degenerating disc and spinal segment is demonstrated at surgery using the Yeung Endoscopic Spine System (Y.E.S.S.), (Richard Wolf Surgical Instrument Company, Vernon Hills, IL, USA). An Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved study of endoscopic treatment for degenerative conditions of th

Redefining the costal margin: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Classical teaching of rib anatomy contends that the false ribs (7th to 10th) fuse anteriorly to form the costal margin of the chest. Slipped rib syndrome consists of false rib subluxation into the thorax with symptomatic impingement of the intercostal nerve. We sought to determine the incidence of this anatomic finding through anatomic study of the costal margin. METHODS: Cadavers were evaluated for mobility and attachment of the ninth and tenth ribs. Experienced anatomists and chest wall surgeons conducted a standardized dissection and assessed rib tip mobility using predefined c…

Joseph Engel (1816-1899), author of a meaningful dissertation on tumors of the pituitary infundibulum: his report on the oldest preserved whole craniopharyngioma specimen.

Joseph Engel (1816-1899) was a Viennese anatomist and pathologist trained under the mentorship of Carl von Rokitansky (1804-1878), the man who laid the foundations of gross anatomical pathology. In 1839, Engel completed his first scientific project: the dissertation entitled "Über den Hirnanhang und den Trichter" (About the pituitary gland and the infundibulum). This work analyzed the pathological and clinical characteristics of the pituitary and infundibulum tumor specimens collected at the Vienna Pathologic-Anatomical Museum. This little-known work represents one of the earliest attempts to

Thalamic Volume Is Reduced in Cervical and Laryngeal Dystonias.

BACKGROUND: Dystonia, a debilitating movement disorder characterized by abnormal fixed positions and/or twisting postures, is associated with dysfunction of motor control networks. While gross brain lesions can produce secondary dystonias, advanced neuroimaging techniques have been required to identify network abnormalities in primary dystonias. Prior neuroimaging studies have provided valuable insights into the pathophysiology of dystonia, but few directly assessed the gross volume of motor control regions, and to our knowledge, none identified abnormalities common to multiple types of idiopa

Neuron number and size in prefrontal cortex of children with autism.

CONTEXT: Autism often involves early brain overgrowth, including the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Although prefrontal abnormality has been theorized to underlie some autistic symptoms, the cellular defects that cause abnormal overgrowth remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether early brain overgrowth in children with autism involves excess neuron numbers in the PFC. DESIGN, SETTING, AND CASES: Postmortem prefrontal tissue from 7 autistic and 6 control male children aged 2 to 16 years was examined by expert anatomists who were blinded to diagnostic status. Number and size of neurons were q…

Triangular fossa of the third cerebral ventricle - an original 3D model and morphometric study.

INTRODUCTION: The triangular recess (TR), also called triangular fossa or vulva cerebri, represents the anterior extension of the diencephalic ventricle, located between the anterior columns of the fornix and the anterior white commissure. Over time, this structure of the third cerebral ventricle generated many disputes. While some anatomists support its presence, others have opposite opinions, considering that it only becomes visible under certain conditions. The aim of the study is to demonstrate the tangible structure of the triangular recess. Secondly, the quantitative analysis allowed us …

[Rare Compression Syndrome of the Median Nerve due to a Supracondylar Humeral Process and a Ligament of Struthers].

INTRODUCTION: A supracondylar process is a bony spur on the distal anteromedial surface of the humerus, and it is considered an anatomical variant with a prevalence of 0.4-2.7% according to anatomical studies. In almost all cases, it is associated with a fibrous, sometimes ossified ligament, which extends from the supracondylar process to the medial epicondyle. This ligament is known in the literature as the ligament of Struthers, named after the Scottish anatomist who first described it in detail in 1854. In rare cases, the supracondylar process can be a clinically relevant finding as a cause

Evaluation of an animation tool developed to supplement dental student study of the cranial nerves.

INTRODUCTION: The structure/function of the cranial nerves is a core topic for dental students. However, due to the perceived complexity of the subject, it is often difficult for students to develop a comprehensive understanding of key concepts using textbooks and models. It is accepted that the acquisition of anatomical knowledge can be facilitated by visualisation of structures. This study aimed to develop and assess a novel cranial nerve animation as a supplemental learning aid for dental students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multidisciplinary team of anatomists, neuroscientists and a compute…

Investigation of meningomyovertebral structures within the upper cervical epidural space: a sheet plastination study with clinical implications.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Over the past two decades, soft-tissue structures communicating with the dura mater within the epidural space have become the focus of many anatomical and histopathologic studies. The relationship between these bridging structures has yet to be evaluated in situ. PURPOSE: This is the first study that used E12 sheet plastination to investigate the epidural space of the upper cervical spine in situ and its associated bridging structures. Given the complexity of this space, this study may prove useful to clinical anatomists and surgeons who operate within this region. STUDY …

A study on sex prediction by using machine algorithms with anthropometric measurements of the seventh cervical vertebra.

Prediction of sex is among important topics of forensic medicine and forensic anthropology. In studies conducted for sex prediction, pelvis and cranium bones are the most preferred bones. In cases when it is difficult to examine the pelvis and cranium bones, vertebrae have been the subject of research in sex analysis studies. The aim of this study is to predict sex by using Computed Tomography (CT) images of the vertebra prominens (C7). Another aim of the study is to make automatic measurements using labeling on C7. This retrospective study included images of 100 female and 100 male individual
