A survey of blood selenium (Se) concentrations in Norwegian Red heifers and dry period cows was conducted to reveal possible association to management, feeding, health and fertility. Selenium contents were determined in 254 herd blood samples consisting of pooled samples from individual non-lactating animals from herds in 5 counties. The Se concentrations showed a normal distribution with mean 0.09 microg Se/g blood, with a standard deviation (SD) of 0.05, and ranged from 0.02 to 0.23 microg/g, with 50 % of the samples being between 0.06 and 0.11 microg/g. The herds with Se concentrations belo

The Norwegian dairy goat industry has largely succeeded in controlling caprine arthritis encephalitis (CAE), caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) and paratuberculosis through a voluntary disease eradication programme called Healthier Goats (HG). The aim of this study was to apply an on-farm welfare assessment protocol to assess the effects of HG on goat welfare. A total of 30 dairy goat farms were visited, of which 15 had completed disease eradication and 15 had not yet started. Three trained observers assessed the welfare on 10 farms each. The welfare assessment protocol comprised both resource-based

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii infections are common in humans and animals worldwide. Among all intermediate hosts of T. gondii, captive marsupials from Australia and New Zealand are highly susceptible to clinical toxoplasmosis. However, most free-range marsupials establish chronic T. gondii infection. Infected marsupial meat may serve as a source of T. gondii infection for humans. Differences in mortality patterns in different species of kangaroos and other marsupials are not fully understood. Lifestyle, habitat, and the genotype of T. gondii are predicted to be risk factors. For example, koal

Due to their potential impact on the host's phenotype, organ-specific microbiotas are receiving increasing attention in several animal species, including cattle. Specifically, the vaginal microbiota of ruminants is attracting growing interest, due to its predicted critical role on cows' reproductive functions in livestock contexts. Notably, fertility disorders represent a leading cause for culling, and additional research would help to fill relevant knowledge gaps. In the present study, we aimed to characterize the vaginal microbiota of a large cohort of 1171 female dairy cattle from 19 commer

Enterococcus cecorum is an important poultry pathogen associated with lameness and increased mortality, leading to major welfare and economic impacts. Treatment is often challenging because disease is frequently detected late and the organism can localise in bone and joints, limiting antimicrobial efficacy. Presence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes may further complicate treatment. Despite increasing global genomic research, only one recent study has investigated the phylogeny of E. cecorum from conventional UK broiler farms, using limited samples and a restricted time frame. In this st

Depigmentation defects in cattle are characterized by the absence of pigment in specific skin regions, increasing susceptibility to health issues and often leading to early culling. In Nellore cattle, depigmentation is primarily observed at the tail tip, mucous membranes, and as small patches across the body. This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters and perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for depigmentation in Nellore cattle. Data were sourced from the DeltaGen® breeding program, provided by Gensys®. Phenotypic records included 182,964 Nellore cattle, with a 6.8% incidence of

Milk is an essential commodity whose demand far exceeds supply. However, dairy animal productivity is constantly hampered by parasitic diseases such as fasciolosis, affecting milk production. Despite the negative impact of liver fluke on milk production, there is little information on liver fluke infection and associated abattoir losses (body weight, condition score, liver pathology, and carcass quality) in culled dairy cattle. This study aimed to determine body condition scores, fluke intensity, liver pathology, and carcass quality of different cattle genotypes infected with Fasciola species

Infection of orthopedic implants is a growing clinical challenge to manage due to the proliferation of drug-resistant bacterial strains. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether the treatment of implants with ceragenin-90 (CSA-90), a synthetic compound based on endogenous antibacterial peptides, could prevent infection in a novel rat model of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) challenged with either local or systemic Staphylococcus aureus. A novel preclinical model of PJI was created using press-fit porous titanium implants in the distal femur of male Wistar rats. Sterile implants were

Classical swine fever (CSF) is a viral infectious disease of swine with significant economic impact in the affected countries due to the limitation of trade, culling of infected animals and production losses. In Latin America, CSF is endemic in several countries including Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil and Peru. Since 2010, the National Veterinary Services of Peru have been working to better control and eradicate the disease with an intensive vaccination program. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the vaccination program and determine which factors are still contributing to t

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to provide detailed herd level cost information about an outbreak of interdigital phlegmon (IP), which has been an emerging problem with enlarged loose house barns in Finland in recent years. During enlargement, the farmer's financial situation is sensitive because of the large investments to the farm business and unexpected costs can risk the farm's survival.
RESULTS: The University of Helsinki research herd and three commercial herds having outbreaks of IP in 2012 or 2013 were visited to collect detailed information about the costs and economic impact of

BACKGROUND: Treatment of infected open fractures remains a major clinical challenge. In this study, we investigated the novel broad-spectrum antibiotic CSA-90 (cationic steroid antibiotic-90) as an antimicrobial agent.
METHODS: CSA-90 was screened in an osteoblast cell culture model for effects on differentiation and mineralization. Local delivery of CSA-90 was then tested alone and in combination with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in a mouse ectopic bone formation model (n=40 mice) and in a rat open fracture model inoculated with pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus (n

Echinococcus granulosus is rare in The Netherlands and most human patients originate from southern Europe and Africa, where E. granulosus is still endemic in sheep, cattle, and pigs. Since the accession of some south-eastern European countries to the European Union, a large number of cattle have been imported from this area, according to national import data. The objective of this study was to determine the risk of re-introduction of E. granulosus in The Netherlands via the import of cattle from these endemic areas. The number of infected imported cattle was determined by correcting the number

We demonstrate the potent antiviral activity of a novel viral neuraminidase (sialidase) inhibitor, 4-guanidino-2,4-dideoxy-2,3-dehydro-N-acetylneuraminic acid (GG167), administered by the intranasal route in comparison with those of amantadine and ribavirin in experimental respiratory tract infections induced with influenza A and B viruses. In an extended study in which mice were infected (day 0) with influenza A/Singapore/1/57 virus, with treatments given prophylactically plus twice daily over days 0 to 3 and with mice observed to day 10, we show that intranasally administered GG167 at 0.4 an

Paratuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium, Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). MAP infection of ruminants triggers progressive wasting disease characterized by granulomatous lymphadenitis, enteritis, and severe intestinal pathology that often requires early culling of the animal. The resulting economic burden is significant, and MAP exposure in the workplace constitutes a significant zoonotic risk. Although it has been established that the MAP propagates within resident immune cells, less is known about how it traverses the epithelium. It is currently

BACKGROUND: Current strategies for controlling American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) have been unable to prevent the spread of the disease across Brazil. With no effective vaccine and culling of infected dogs an unpopular and unsuccessful alternative, new tools are urgently needed to manage populations of the sand fly vector, Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz and Neiva (Diptera: Psychodidae). Here, we test two potential strategies for improving L. longipalpis control using the synthetic sand fly pheromone (+/-)-9-methylgermacrene-B: the first in conjunction with spraying of animal houses with insecti

The objective of this study was to monitor the reproductive performance of dairy cows in smallholder farms under the Tanga Dairy Development Project (TDDP). The findings can be used to improve reproductive efficiency. Dates of oestrus, artificial insemination (AI) or service by bull and calving were recorded, and pregnancy was diagnosed by rectal palpation. Daily milk yields, monthly body condition score (BCS) measured on the scale of 1-9, feed availability, calf rearing, and diseases were also recorded. Milk progesterone (P4) concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) in 1327 sequen

Test and cull-based animal tuberculosis eradication programs have not succeeded in eliminating TB in various regions and implementing those programs is not feasible in others. Vaccination represents an additional control tool under study. Here we evaluated the immunologic, pathologic, and microbiological effects of heat-inactivated Mycobacterium bovis (HIMB), phage-inactivated Mycobacterium caprae (PIMC) and live Mycobacterium microti (LMM) subcutaneous vaccination in goats challenged endotracheally with M. caprae. All three vaccines were compatible with interferon-γ release assay diagnosis us

BACKGROUND: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects livestock and causes significant economic losses. Control of FMD relies on culling infected animals and implementing comprehensive vaccination programs. Armenia's livestock sector, with extensive use of remote pastures and proximity to countries where FMD is endemic, faces particular challenges in managing the disease.
AIM: This study aims to review the epidemiological trends of FMD in Armenia over the past 60 years, evaluate the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns, and assess strategies for maintain

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection in cattle results in variable proviral load (PVL), a key indicator of viral transmission and disease progression. However, the relative contributions of host and viral factors to PVL are not fully understood. The present study evaluated four potential determinants of PVL in BLV-infected cattle: two host-related factors (BoLA-DRB3 alleles and age) and two viral factors (Tax amino acid 233 (TAX-233) and 5'LTR nucleotide 175 (LTR-175)) in 1673 Japanese Black (JB) and 979 Holstein Friesian (HF) breeding cows. The contribution of each factor to PVL was quantifi

When free-roaming in natural areas, the domestic cat (Felis silvestris catus) is ranked high among the most destructive alien species. Near human dwellings, it might pose a risk to humans, impair sanitation, and suffer from poor welfare. Cats' popularity as companion animals complicates their population control. Thus, culling is often replaced by a fertility control method called “trap–neuter–return/release” (TNR), considered more humane. Despite the extensive application of TNR, a long-term controlled study was never performed to test its effectiveness. We present a uniquely designed controll
