Molecular evidence of host influences on the evolution and spread of human tapeworms.

The taeniasis/cysticercosis complex is included in the list of neglected zoonotic diseases by the World Health Organization due to its significant impact on public health in tropical areas. Cysticercosis is still endemic in many regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Long absent in Europe and in other developed countries, cysticercosis has recently re-emerged in the United States and Canada, due to immigration, travel and local transmission. This has encouraged the use of molecular data to understand better the influence of animal and human hosts on the emergence and spread of Taenia speci

Genetic Variation Predominates Over Developmental Temperature-Induced Plasticity in Shaping Migratory Flight Capacity in the Diamondback Moth.

Insects represent the largest group of migratory animals in terms of species and biomass, yet the relative contributions of population-associated genetic differentiation and environmental plasticity to insect migration remain unclear. Here, we integrate population genomics with common garden experiments to infer the geographic origins of immigrant populations and evaluate population- and developmental-temperature-associated variation in migration-related flight traits in the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), a major pest of cruciferous crops. Population-genomic analyses indicated that im

In situ infestation of sea trout Salmo trutta with salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis reveals parasite-induced behavioral modifications.

In areas with high densities of salmon farming, spillover of the ectoparasitic salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis poses a major threat to wild anadromous salmonids. By combining experimentally salmon louse infestation (mean ± standard deviation = 0.25 ± 0.25 lice g-1 fish) with acoustic telemetry, we studied the behavior of wild first-time migrating sea trout Salmo trutta (n = 58, fork length = 138-204 mm) from late June to September in a marine area with naturally low infestation pressure. We observed that a similar proportion of sea trout from the control and exposed groups returned to fre

Pop-up satellite archival tag effects on the diving behaviour, growth and survival of adult Atlantic salmon Salmo salar at sea.

The effects of large, externally attached pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) were compared with those of small implanted data storage tags (DSTs) on adult Atlantic salmon Salmo salar during their ocean migration in regards to depth utilization, diving depth, diving rate, diving speed and temperatures experienced. Additionally the return rate and growth of individuals tagged with PSATs was compared with those of small acoustic tags and DSTs. Overall, the depth distribution of individuals tagged with PSATs was similar to that of those tagged with DSTs, reflecting the pelagic nature of S. sal

Mobilization of mercury from lean tissues during simulated migratory fasting in a model songbird.

The pollutant methylmercury accumulates within lean tissues of birds and other animals. Migrating birds catabolize substantial amounts of lean tissue during flight which may mobilize methylmercury and increase circulating levels of this neurotoxin. As a model for a migrating songbird, we fasted zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) that had been dosed with 0.0, 0.1, and 0.6 parts per million (ppm) dietary methylmercury and measured changes in blood total mercury concentrations (THg) in relation to reductions in lean mass. Birds lost 6-16% of their lean mass during the fast, and THg increased an

Graphically characterizing the movement of a rabid striped skunk epizootic across the landscape in northwestern Wyoming.

A striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) rabies epizootic in northwestern Wyoming was studied from the Index Case in 1988 to the last case in 1993, and possibly is the first rabies epizootic in a previously rabies-free zone monitored from beginning to end. The 843 km(2) study area comprised skunk habitat along 90 km of Shoshone River's floodplain from Bighorn Lake upstream to Cody. Of 1,015 skunks tested, 215 were rabies-positive. Integrating spatial and temporal data from positive cases, we analyzed the epizootic's movements and dynamics at 6-month intervals using multivariate movement maps, a new

MiR-126-3p and MiR-195-5p as Novel Therapeutic Attenuators of Liver Fibrosis by Targeting the IRS1/PI3K Signalling Pathway.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatic fibrosis is a progressive response to chronic liver injury. A key event in the development of hepatic fibrosis is the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs); emerging research indicates that microRNAs play crucial roles in regulating HSCs activation. However, the specific roles of miR-126-3p (miR-126) and miR-195-5p (miR-195) in liver fibrosis remain inadequately understood. METHODS: We examined the expression of miR-126 and miR-195 in activated HSCs, fibrotic liver tissues from animal models, and blood samples from patients with liver disease. The effects on c

Bioactive scaffolds for treatment of diabetic wounds with bone infections.

Diabetes is a prevalent disease worldwide, and every year millions of people undergo amputations due to untreated or severe diabetic wounds that progress to bone involvement. Although many strategies have been applied to overcome the diabetic wound burden, most are limited by high cost and prolonged treatment duration. Hence, an effective solution is needed for complex diabetic wounds with bone infections. In the present study, a dual therapeutic strategy targeting both skin wounds and underlying bone infections was applied to treat diabetic wounds with bone involvement. A clinically relevant

The alternatively spliced diacylglycerol kinase gamma-Δ exon13 transcript generated under hypoxia promotes glioblastoma progression.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most malignant types of central nervous system tumors. Oxygen deprivation in the tumor microenvironment is thought to be an important factor in promoting GBM progression. However, the mechanisms of hypoxia-promoted tumor progression remain elusive. METHODS: Alternative splicing of diacylglycerol kinase gamma (DGKG)-Δ exon13 was amplified and verified by PCR-Sanger sequencing. The functions of DGKG and DGKG-Δ exon13 were analyzed by Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), Transwell, Matrigel-transwell experiments, and in vivo orthotropic GBM animal models. Tra

Fraxetin reduces endometriotic lesions through activation of ER stress, induction of mitochondria-mediated apoptosis, and generation of ROS.

BACKGROUND: Fraxetin, a phytochemical obtained from Fraxinus rhynchophylla, is well known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties. However, fraxetin regulates the progression of endometriosis, which is a benign reproductive disease that results in low quality of life and infertility. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: We hypothesized that fraxetin may have therapeutic effects on endometriosis and aimed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of mitochondrial function and tiRNA regulation. STUDY DESIGN: Endometriotic animal models and cells (End1/E6E7 and VK2/E6E7) were used to identify the mo

Seropositivity of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. in Germany-an analysis across four German National Cohort (NAKO) study sites.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is caused by the transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. from ticks to humans. Climate affects tick abundance, and climate change is projected to promote shifts in abundance in Europe, potentially increasing human exposure. We analyzed serum samples collected between the years 2014-2019 from German National Cohort (NAKO) participants at four study sites (Augsburg, Berlin, Hanover, Münster) for immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and line blot immunoassay as confirmatory test for positive and equ

Altered postnatal maturation of striatal GABAergic interneurons in a phenotypic animal model of dystonia.

GABAergic disinhibition has been suggested to play a critical role in the pathophysiology of several basal ganglia disorders, including dystonia, a common movement disorder. Previous studies have shown a deficit of striatal GABAergic interneurons (IN) in the dtsz mutant hamster, one of the few phenotypic animal models of dystonia. However, mechanisms underlying this deficit are largely unknown. In the present study, we investigated the migration and maturation of striatal IN during postnatal development (18days of age) and at age of highest severity of dystonia (33days of age) in this hamster

Transplantation of human embryonic stem cells alleviates motor dysfunction in AAV2-Htt171-82Q transfected rat model of Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) transplantation had shown to provide a potential source of cells in neurodegenerative disease studies and lead to behavioral recovery in lentivirus transfected or, toxin-induced Huntington's disease (HD) rodent model. Here, we aimed to observe if transplantation of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION)-labeled hESCs could migrate in the neural degenerated area and improve motor dysfunction in an AAV2-Htt171-82Q transfected Huntington rat model. METHODS: All animals were randomly allocated into three groups at first: HD group, sham gro

Pharmacological inhibition of CXCR2 chemokine receptors modulates paraquat-induced intoxication in rats.

Paraquat (PQ) is an agrochemical agent commonly used worldwide, which is allied to potential risks of intoxication. This herbicide induces the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that ends up compromising various organs, particularly the lungs and the brain. This study evaluated the deleterious effects of paraquat on the central nervous system (CNS) and peripherally, with special attempts to assess the putative protective effects of the selective CXCR2 receptor antagonist SB225002 on these parameters. PQ-toxicity was induced in male Wistar rats, in a total dose of 50 mg/kg, and control

Proteomic Differences Reveal Early Development of Contrasting Energetic Strategies Between Divergent Migratory Ecotypes in Three-Spined Stickleback.

Divergence in migratory behaviour represents a striking and common axis of life-history variation in animals. Plastic changes in adult animals in preparation for migration are well known, but the differences in early development between migratory and non-migratory forms are not well documented. These differences might contribute to reproductive isolation because of the potentially substantial divergence in metabolism and physiology. Here we document substantial differences between migratory ecotypes in sarcomeric development and energetic pathways from immediately after hatching. On North Uist

Bionate Biocompatibility: In Vivo Study in Rabbits.

Response to foreign materials includes local tissue reaction, osteolysis, implant loosening, and migration to lymph nodes and organs. Bionate 80A human explants show minor wear and slight local tissue reaction, but we do not know the response at the spinal cord, nerve roots, lymph nodes, or distant organs. This study aims to figure out reactions against Bionate 80A when implanted at the spinal epidural space of 24 20-week-old New Zealand white rabbits. In one group of 12 rabbits, we implanted Bionate 80A on the spinal epidural space, and another group of 12 rabbits was used as the control grou

Multimedia fate model and risk assessment of typical antibiotics in the integrated demonstration zone of the Yangtze River Delta, China.

Due to the widespread consumption of antibiotics by humans and animals, antibiotic residues from human and animal excrements are released into the environment through domestic sewage and breeding wastewater, which ultimately affect the ecological environment and human health. In this study, the concentrations of 10 antibiotics in the air, water, soil, and sediment from 2013 to 2019 in Qingpu District of the integrated demonstration zone of the Yangtze River Delta were predicated by developing a dynamic Level IV fugacity model. The influence of seasonal environmental factors (e.g., temperature,
