Screening with high-resolution anoscopy (HRA) and subsequent therapeutic intervention are increasingly recognized as the standard procedure for anal cancer. Generally, lesions suspected as being high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions are biopsied and treated if they are grade 2 or 3 anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN). OBJECTIVES: Anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) has a higher incidence described in certain groups, namely, in women with vulvar high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (vHSILs) and/or human papillomavirus squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC). Anal dysplasia can lead to anal cancer, which affects persons living with HIV (PLWH) more than people in the general population. Screening for anal dysplasia is recommended to detect anal cancer at an early stage. BACKGROUND: Anal adenocarcinoma (AA) is a rare malignancy with decreased survival compared to rectal adenocarcinoma (RA). However, AA continues to be treated with similar algorithms compared to rectal cancer with minimal data regarding the efficacy of these treatment algorithms.
