We report an unusual case of an epibulbar choristoma in a neonate born with a mass arising from the cornea. Radiologic examination showed focal corneal bulge with absence of the lens. Histologic study revealed the lesion was an epibulbar choristoma composed of only brain tissue.

Twelve consecutive children under the age of ten years who were referred to the authors' hospital between 1990 and 1993 with a combined perforating injury of the cornea and the lens were treated as follows: lensectomy, corneal suture (in 11 of them) and, shortly after surgery, correction of the refractive error with a contact lens and a bifocal glass. In a prospective study the changes in the ocular axial lengths and in the overall refractions were examined in cases of unilateral and bilateral congenital cataract requiring surgery during the first year of life. Angiographically confirmed cystoid macula edema occurs in 8% of aphakic patients and 3% of these patients will suffer permanent reduction of visual acuity. This is apparently due to inflammatory reactions and to alterations of the vitreo-macular interface. Intracapsular cataract extraction has a higher incidence of angiographically confirmed CME clinical or persistent than extracapsular extraction. YAG-laser capsulotomy does not have any significant risk of CME. At present, there is no definitive clinically effective treatment.

Nine aphakic eyes from human embryos infected with Rubella or Parvovirus B19 during early pregnancy were histologically examined. One of the eyes conformed with the classical description of primary congenital aphakia (PCA), namely, that no structures of the anterior eye segment are present. A description is given of two patients who had a severe wound dehiscence with traumatic aphakia after perforating kertoplasty. In both cases, after vitrectomy and resuturing the transplant remained clear in its central part (visuel accuity 0.7 p). Details of the operative technic are discussed.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of free migration of intraocular glass in aphakia after glaucoma surgery.
METHODS: We report the case of a 27-year-old man with a history of perforating injury to the right eye 10 years previously and glaucoma surgery 1 year previously presenting with 1 month of pain and frequent floaters in front of the right eye. On examination, the glass fragment was seen to lie free in the anterior chamber or migrate backwards through the pupil, remaining mobile on the inferior retinal surface when the patient was prone or supine, respectively.
