Inorganic ions play a significant role in biological systems, including their effects on protein folding, stability, and protein-protein interactions. This contribution presents an in silico study of selective ion binding by the protein bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI) in NaCl(aq), KCl(aq), MgCl2(aq), and CaCl2(aq). The authors report a case of fibrinolytic haemorrhagic diathesis after operation of vas deferens carried out under epidural analgesia. Attention is called to the diagnostic difficulties in the rare complication of these operations. Treatment of fibrinolytic haemorrhagic diathesis is discussed stressing the advantages of trasylol, which is a drug of choice in emergency states associated with bleeding from the surface of the wound when difficulties arise in carrying out full blood clotting tests.

The authors review the case of a fifty-three-year-old cirrhotic patient. He was admitted to the emergency unit with symptoms of acute abdomen and haemorrhagic shock. Abdominal bleeding of unknown origin was revealed by UH and CT imaging. After circulatory resuscitation, urgent abdominal exploration was indicated. During operation arterial bleeding of a ruptured cirrhotic nodulus was found. Tacho-Comb (a human fibrinogen/thrombin coated collagen patch) was applied onto the hepatic wound. Prompt haemostasis was achieved. The patient was discharged after an uneventful postoperative period.

After a median laparatomy, nephrostomy was performed on 22 porcine kidneys: puncture, dilatation and introduction of a 26-French operating sheath through the parenchyma into the renal pelvis. At the end of the operation, an 8-French nephrostomy catheter prepared with a collagen-fibrin tissue-adhesive sealant was introduced through the operating sheath and the sheath was afterwards extracted. We have evaluated a biodegradable, nontoxic sealant to temporarily plug retinal breaks in an experimental model.
