Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is a relatively rare condition characterized by severe, paroxysmal episodes of lancinating pain in the tongue, throat, ear, and tonsil. This disorder is assumed to be due to compression of the glossopharyngeal nerve by vascular structures. A 47-year-old woman complaining of sharp and lancinating pain in the right periauricular and submandibular areas visited our hospital. Swallowing, chewing, and lying on her right side triggered the pain. Her neurologic examination revealed no specific abnormalities. The results of routine hematologic and blood chemistry studies wer

BACKGROUND: The distribution of the arachnoid membrane and its relationship with the neurovascular structures in the pineal region are still not fully understood.
OBJECTIVE: Because the arachnoid membrane has an intimate relationship with the neurovascular structures in the pineal region and it will always be encountered surgically, we attempted to clarify the formation and distribution of the arachnoid envelope over the pineal region (AEPG).
METHODS: The formation and distribution of the AEPG and its relationship with the neurovascular structures in the pineal region were examined by anatom

Intracranial arachnoid cysts are typically benign lesions, but rarely, they may cause signs and symptoms relating to increased intracranial pressure. We report 4 pediatric patients with arachnoid cysts who received successful surgical treatment after failing to respond to conservative medical therapies. After undergoing a shunting procedure, each patient experienced improvement in symptoms, resolution of optic disc swelling, and reduction or elimination of medications necessary to manage the condition. These cases illustrate the potential for arachnoid cysts to outstrip compensatory mechanisms

Modeling the behavior of mammalian arachnoid cells is critical to understand hydrocephalus and other brain disorders involving abnormal flow of cerebrospinal fluid, yet relatively little is known about the physiology of arachnoid cells due to lack of a robust three-dimensional model system. Explanted primary cultures have been the only option to study transport across arachnoid cell membranes, but practical limitations of primary culture include slow growth, early senescence, and poor reproducibility. The purpose of this study was to create immortalized rat arachnoid cell lines to permit in vi

Arachnoid cysts (AC) located within the interhemispheric fissure are rare, frequently associated with agenesis or hypogenesis of the corpus callosum. The optimal method for surgical treatment is under debate. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical results of seven infants (five males, two females; mean age, 5.1 months) with large interhemispheric AC who underwent cystoperitoneal shunting (CP) and evaluated the long-term efficacy in terms of clinical data, psychomotor development and neuroimaging. All patients were symptomatic and operated on before they reached 1 year of age.

An unusual association between an arachnoid cyst and a decompensated pyloric stenosis in a three years-old boy is presented. The little patient was admitted into hospital with haematemesis, melena, influenced generally condition and acute posthemorrhagic anaemia following aspirin intake for hypertermia. Specific intensive care was successful and the little patient was discharged but without an upper digestive endoscopy(parents refusal, technical reasons). After one week he returned with progressive worsening vomitings and an intracranial hypertension was suspected. CT documented an arachnoid c

INTRODUCTION: The optimal surgical management of sylvian arachnoid cysts is debated. We present our experience in children who were treated endoscopically, focusing on the limits and complications of this approach.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen children with a temporo-sylvian arachnoid cyst have been treated using a purely temporal endoscopic approach.
RESULTS: In all but one case, the recognition of anatomical landmarks was obtained at the insertion of the endoscope. In one child, the orientation and opening of the basal cisterns were more difficult due to the thickness and opacity of th

Arachnoid cysts are collection of cerebrospinal fluid contained inside a cavity lined by leptomeninges. It constitutes 1% of all intracranial tumours mostly present in the middle cranial fossa. Retrobulbar arachnoid cyst in elderly persons are a rare occurrence. We report a rare case of retrobulbar arachnoid cyst with ophthalmic manifestations and its effective management. CT-guided aspiration of the cyst and subsequent cytological and biochemical test revealed an arachnoid cyst. Patient is on a 5-year follow up without recurrence and improvement of the vision in the affected eye.

OBJECT: Arachnoid cysts are congenital lesions that arise during development by splitting of the arachnoid membrane. Large cysts can be adjacent to CSF pathways causing a marked midline shift and hydrocephalus. The association between a large arachnoid cyst and hydrocephalus has been commonly described as being due to a mass effect, but these previous reports have not focused closely on any associated intraventricular abnormalities.
METHODS: Seven patients who were previously treated with a cystoperitoneal shunt presented with shunt failure, hydrocephalus, and/or cyst expansion. All of these

The aetiopathology, clinical features and treatment of arachnoid cysts (AC) are still extremely controversial topics. The posterior fossa is the second most common site of these lesions, since they are often detected in the cerebellar or cerebellar-cistern region. Despite this, almost all the cases of non-surgical reduction of an AC reported in literature concern cysts of the middle fossa, whereas only two cases of spontaneous reduction of a posterior fossa AC has been described in literature. A complete review of the literature regarding this topic has been collected and discussed. The author

A 2 year old presented with incomitant esotropia and abduction deficit consistent with sixth nerve palsy. Neuroimaging revealed an arachnoid cyst on the left. Neurosurgical shunting followed by strabismus surgery relieved the abduction deficit and esotropia. An arachnoid cyst may be a rare cause of acquired sixth nerve palsy and strabismus in children.

Growing skull fracture (GSF) is a rare complication of head trauma. A posttraumatic intraventricular arachnoid cyst (AC), neither isolated nor accompanied by a GSF has not been reported previously. A seven-year-old girl was admitted after a severe head injury with a separated right parieto-occipital fracture and contusion. She responded well to conservative therapy. Seven weeks after discharge, she was re-admitted with a large parieto-occipital pseudomeningoencephalocele due to herniation of cerebrospinal fluid and neural tissue to the subgaleal space through the widened fracture defect, an ex

Arachnoid cysts (AC) are extra-cerebral cerebrospinal fluid collections of unknown origin. They correspond to 1% of all intracranial nontraumatic space-occupying lesions and appear more frequently in the middle fossa (50%). More than 25% of these cysts are incidental findings and the majority of patients are asymptomatic. Seizures, intracranial hypertension signs, neurological deficits, macrocrania, developmental delay and bulging of the skull are the main signs and symptoms of the lesion. AC rupture and bleeding are rare, usually occurring in young adults and associated with trauma. The risk

Symptomatic arachnoid cyst in an adult patient is rare. We present a case of a 51-year-old female with an arachnoid cyst of the right occipital convexity who developed homonymous hemianopsia. She had complained of numbness in the limbs at the age of 47 and based on MRI was diagnosed with a cystic space-occupying lesion in the right occipital convexity. After being under observation for four and a half years, she complained of headache and visual disturbance, at which time we diagnosed growth of the cyst. On ophthalmologic examination, homonymous hemianopsia was demonstrated. She underwent memb

OBJECT: The goal of this study was to investigate the microsurgical anatomy of the interpeduncular cistern and related arachnoid membranes.
METHODS: The interpeduncular cistern and related arachnoid membranes were studied in eight Han Chinese adult human cadaveric brains with the aid of an operating microscope. The interpeduncular cistern is one area in the cranial cavity in which the arachnoid membranes and trabeculae are extremely luxuriant and complicated. The Liliequist membrane, the medial pontomesencephalic membrane, and the lateral pontomesencephalic membranes form the walls of the int

Arachnoid cysts (AC) often present with symptoms depending on their anatomical location within the skull; while supratentorial cysts grow causing relatively few symptoms, infratentorial ones may impair liquor circulation at the level of the fourth ventricle, giving rise to intracranial hypertension, or may stretch the complex nerve network in the cerebello-pontine angle. We report the singular clinical history of a 54-year-old male, who suddenly began to feel dizzy while sitting at his workplace, complaining of left tinnitus and aural fullness, in a classic clinical picture of Ménière's diseas

We report a 34 year old male patient presenting with occipital headache and bilateral shoulder and neck pain. Cranial MRT discloses a large arachnoid cyst ventral to the medulla oblongata. The cyst displaces the caudal medulla oblongata dorsally to an angle of almost 90 degrees without causing myelopathy. Physical examination reveals normal neurological findings without any sign of brainstem lesions or lesions of the medulla oblongata. Orthopedic evaluation shows mild functional abnormalities as expected in tension headache. Multiple electrophysiologic investigations such as motor-, somatosens

OBJECTIVE: Intracranial epidermoids (cholesteatomas) mimic arachnoid cysts in their radiologic characteristics, especially in the cerebellopontine angle. It is essential to differentiate the two conditions because they warrant different therapeutic interventions. The objective of this study is to elucidate the different radiologic characteristics of the conditions.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a retrospective study of 4 patients referred for a differential diagnosis and management of intracranial cystic lesions to the Departments of Neurotology/Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology in a terti

Spinal cord dysfunction secondary to spinal arachnoid cysts (SACs) has been reported previously in dogs. This retrospective study reviews the clinical signs, radiographic findings, and outcome after surgical resection of SACs in 14 dogs. Plain vertebral column radiographs and myelography were done in all dogs. Computed tomography (CT) was done in 7 dogs and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in 3 dogs. Affected dogs were between 1 and 12 years of age, and 8 of 14 were Rottweilers. Abnormalities detected on neurological examination depended on the location of the SAC. Five dogs had bilobed or mult
