Supplemental Vitamin D3 for the Prevention of Bone Stress Injuries in Collegiate Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is vital for bone mineralization and turnover. Athletes are prone to bone stress injuries (BSIs) when repetitive forces exceed the bone's remodeling capacity. Our study aims to determine if providing supplemental vitamin D to collegiate athletes reduces the incidence of BSIs in this population. HYPOTHESIS: Providing supplemental vitamin D to collegiate athletes will reduce the incidence of BSIs in this population. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective cohort study, with a level of evidence of II, which means a lesser-quality prospective cohort with a retrospective compara

A Comprehensive Case Study of a Hyperlaxity Dilemma: An Injury-Prone Young Athlete.

A prevalent condition that is frequently linked to joint trauma is joint hyper-laxity. The knee joint is one of the most complex and injury-prone joints in sports. The most commonly injured is the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The case presented below is of a 24-year-old athlete with a past history of many sports-related injuries who is now presented with a complete tear of the ACL with hyper-laxity as a risk factor. The patient has a Beighton score of six out of nine without any other symptoms, which is suggestive of benign hyper-laxity of the joints and not hyper-laxity syndrome. Here, w

Regenerative Medicine Solutions for Rotator Cuff Injuries in Athletes: Indications and Outcomes.

Rotator cuff (RC) injuries include a wide range of pathologic states. Athletes are perhaps the most susceptible to RC injuries ranging from tendinopathy to partial or full-thickness tears, due to functional overload and repetitive movements, causing abstention from sports for long periods. Regenerative medicine keeps giving us multiple choices to fight the disability caused by these pathologies. A literature search was performed, and findings related to the structure-function of rotator cuff units, pathophysiology of injuries, regenerative medicine treatments, and future strategies were outlin

Alterations to the Kinetic Chain Sequence After a Shoulder Injury in Throwing Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Kinetic chain (KC) sequencing is essential for efficient energy translation through the body in overhead-throwing sports. A sequencing breakdown can result in injuries to the throwing shoulder and thus the management of athlete recovery in an attempt to minimize the impact on both training and performance. PURPOSE: To determine kinematic differences in KC sequencing, imperative for the prevention and rehabilitation of a shoulder injury, during maximal throwing in overhead athletes with and without a shoulder injury. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Kinematic d

Review and update on the management of triangular fibrocartilage complex injuries in professional athletes.

Triangular fibrocartilage complex injuries are common in amateur and professional sports. These injuries are mainly caused by acute or chronic repetitive axial loads on the wrist, particularly on the ulnar side and in association with rotations or radial/ulnar deviations. In order to treat professional athletes, a detailed specific knowledge of the pathology is needed. Moreover, the clinician should fully understand the specific and unique environment and needs of the athletes, their priorities and goals, the type of sport, the time of the season, and the position played. An early diagnosis an

Relaxed Alert Electroencephalography Screening for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Athletes.

Due to the mildness of initial injury, many athletes with recurrent mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are misdiagnosed with other neuropsychiatric illnesses. This study was designed as a proof-of-principle feasibility trial for athletic trainers at a sports facility to generate electroencephalograms (EEGs) from student athletes for discriminating (mTBI) associated EEGs from uninjured ones. A total of 47 EEGs were generated, with 30 athletes recruited at baseline (BL) pre-season, after a concussive injury (IN), and post-season (PS). Outcomes included: 1) visual analyses of EEGs by a neurologis

Elbow Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injuries in Throwing Athletes: Diagnosis and Management.

Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries of the elbow are common in overhead throwing athletes. With throwing, the elbow experiences substantial valgus stress and repetitive microtrauma can lead to injury. Increasing rates of injury among both youth and professional throwers has resulted in a "UCL epidemic." Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction ("Tommy John Surgery") became a part of the public consciousness after Tommy John returned to professional baseball after a UCL reconstruction with Dr Frank Jobe for what was once considered a career-ending injury. Partial tears and some athletes wi

Femoral Injury Over the Site of Spontaneous Regression of an Osteochondroma in a Teenage Athlete.

The spontaneous regression of an osteochondroma is extremely rare. We report a case of medial femoral condyle impaction fracture over the site of spontaneous regression of a pedunculated osteochondroma discovered on advanced imaging after an acute injury in a 16-year-old male American football athlete. Although spontaneous regression of an osteochondroma has been described, the case presented reveals questions regarding resultant architectural changes to the bone after resorption, leaving it prone to injury. This is the first case that describes increased injury risk potential at the site of o

Is There a Relationship Between Workload and Occurrence of Back Pain and Back Injuries in Athletes?

The back is subjected to a great deal of strain in many sports. Up to 20% of all sports injuries involve an injury to the lower back or neck. Repetitive or high impact loads (e.g., running, gymnastics, skiing) and weight loading (e.g., weightlifting) affect the lower back. Rotation of the torso (e.g., golf, tennis) causes damage to both, the lumbar and thoracic spine. The cervical spine is most commonly injured in contact sports (e.g., boxing, football). One of the factors that increases the odds of injuries in athletes is excessive and rapid increases in training loads. In spite of currently
