Enjoyment of music by elderly hearing-impaired listeners.

BACKGROUND: Anecdotal evidence suggests that hearing loss interferes with the enjoyment of music, although it is not known how widespread this problem currently is. PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of music-listening difficulties among a group of elderly hearing aid wearers. RESEARCH DESIGN: Interview. Telephone interviews were conducted with patients who wore hearing aids. Questions regarding several aspects of music listening were included. STUDY SAMPLE: Sixty-eight hearing-impaired people served as subjects. They had all been seen in the audiology clinic for hearing aid evaluation dur

The effectiveness of telepractice for speech-language pathology intervention with children younger than 12 years: A meta-analysis.

BackgroundSince Coronavirus disease 2019, telepractice delivery has become increasingly integrated in the standard practice of speech-language pathologists and audiologists. It is therefore important to synthesize existing knowledge on this intervention modality. However, limited evidence exists regarding its use in children. This meta-analysis evaluated evidence on the effectiveness of telepractice compared to in-person intervention for children aged ≤ 12 years.MethodA systematic search was conducted for systematic reviews, meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials comparing telepractice

Noise Management Preferences During Long-Term Hearing Aid Usage and Their Relation to Audiologic Factors.

Preferences for advanced hearing aid (HA) noise management features, such as directionality and noise reduction (DIR + NR), differ significantly among users. Due to the lack of standardized clinical guidelines for fine-tuning these features, audiologists often rely on individual user preferences. However, this approach doesn't always ensure optimal hearing outcomes. The goal of this study was to examine how users respond to these advanced features in everyday acoustic environments, with two main goals: to assess how sensitive users are to changes in DIR + NR settings compared to subtle gain ad

Leveraging cluster analysis to compare click and chirp-evoked auditory brainstem responses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) can be recorded by presenting short-duration click and chirp stimuli. The ABR test is commonly used for threshold estimation and to examine auditory brainstem integrity. The neural integrity is evaluated at suprathreshold levels. This study aimed to compare click and CE-Chirp®-evoked ABRs recorded at suprathreshold levels in normal-hearing infants and adults, using cluster analysis to identify patterns and distinctions between responses to the two stimuli. METHODS: Click-evoked and CE-Chirp® evoked ABRs were recorded from infants

Age-Related Hearing Loss: Evidence-Based Strategies for Early Detection and Management.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is common in older adults and has been linked to significant health and social challenges. These challenges include cognitive decline, depression, falls, and overall decreased quality of life. Despite its high prevalence, ARHL remains underdiagnosed and undertreated, partly due to its gradual onset, stigma, and lack of standardized screening and management protocols. This article provides a comprehensive overview of evidence-based strategies for the early detection and management of ARHL, with an emphasis on recent clinical practice guidelines where nurses are i

Use of Wideband Acoustic Immittance in Neonates and Infants.

With widespread agreement on the importance of early identification of hearing loss, universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) has become the standard of care in several countries. Despite advancements in screening technology, UNHS and early hearing detection and intervention programs continue to be burdened by high referral rates of false-positive cases due to temporary obstruction of sound in the outer/middle ear at birth. A sensitive adjunct test of middle ear at the time of screening would aid in the interpretation of screening outcomes, minimize unnecessary rescreens, and prioritize refe

[Developmental Speech and Language Disorders According to ICD-11].

Developmental Speech and Language Disorders According to ICD-11 Abstract. In ICD-11, similar to ICD-10, speech and language disorders are classified as neurodevelopmental disorders, which are part of ICD-11 Chapter 6 (Mental, Behavioural and Neurodevelopmental Disorders). The ICD-10 criteria were not well accepted by many professionals in research and clinic who work with children with speech and language disorders. Especially linguists and speech and language therapists see ICD-10 as too crude and lacking specification of individual language problems. Medical professions in turn criticize the

The Role of Patient-Site Facilitators in Teleaudiology: A Scoping Review.

Purpose Teleaudiology helps improve access to hearing health care by overcoming the geographic gap between providers and patients. In many teleaudiology encounters, a facilitator is needed at the patient site to help with hands-on aspects of procedures. The aim of this study was to review the scope and nature of research around patient-site facilitators in teleaudiology. We focused on identifying the facilitators' background, training, and responsibilities. Method To conduct this scoping review, we searched PubMed, CINAHL, and Embase. To be included, studies needed to address teleaudiology; be

COMPARISON OF HEARING THRESHOLD ESTIMATION USING AUDITORY STEADY STATE RESPONSES AND BRAINSTEM AUDITORY EVOKED POTENTIALS IN CHILDREN.

Current recommendations proposed by pediatric audiologists are to commence with hearing amplification in children aged 6 months and above, after previous determination of the type and degree of hearing impairment and audiometric configuration. The goal of this study was to compare results obtained by click-evoked auditory brainstem response (c-ABR) and auditory steady state response (ASSR) in a group of children. This study included 68 children with different degrees of hearing impairment evaluated by c-ABR and ASSR. It is well-known that the c-ABR threshold highly correlates with behavioral h

The Relationship between Severity of Hearing Loss and Subjective Tinnitus Loudness among Patients Seen in a Specialist Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Therapy Clinic in UK.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is often associated with the phantom sound of tinnitus. However, the degree of the association between severity of hearing loss and tinnitus loudness taking into account the impact of other variables (e.g., emotional disturbances) is not fully understood. This is an important question for audiologists who are specialized in tinnitus rehabilitation as patients often ask whether the loudness of their tinnitus will increase if their hearing gets worse. PURPOSE: To explore the relationship between tinnitus loudness and pure tone hearing thresholds. RESEARCH DESIGN: This

A Sound Therapy-Based Intervention to Expand the Auditory Dynamic Range for Loudness among Persons with Sensorineural Hearing Losses: Case Evidence Showcasing Treatment Efficacy.

Case evidence is presented that highlights the clinical relevance and significance of a novel sound therapy-based treatment. This intervention has been shown to be efficacious in a randomized controlled trial for promoting expansion of the dynamic range for loudness and increased sound tolerance among persons with sensorineural hearing losses. Prior to treatment, these individuals were unable to use aided sound effectively because of their limited dynamic ranges. These promising treatment effects are shown in this article to be functionally significant, giving rise to improved speech understan

In-ear medical devices for acoustic therapies in tinnitus treatments, state of the art.

Cochrane reviews indicate there is very limited support for all forms of sound therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy has the strongest support. American Academy of Otolaryngology (AAO) recently published some guidelines which recommends Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for tinnitus intervention, and only indicates that sound therapy should be considered an "option" for intervention. Nevertheless, acoustic therapy could lead to cause changes in the tinnitus perception and has been appreciated by the affected people for years. In the last decades, the use of sound or sound enrichment has be
