Beyond the "information deficit model" - understanding vaccine-hesitant attitudes of midwives in Austria: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are considered key stakeholders in efforts to address vaccine hesitancy. Midwives' influence in advising expectant parents on early-childhood vaccinations is unquestioned, yet they remain an understudied group. The literature on midwives' attitudes towards vaccinations is also inconclusive. We therefore conducted an explorative qualitative study on midwives' vaccine-hesitant attitudes towards MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccinations in Austria. METHODS: We conducted 12 in-depth interviews on their knowledge, concerns, and beliefs with midwives who self-identifie…

Low seroprotection rate for meningococcus serogroup C in the adult HIV-1-infected population in Austria.

Current Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines recommend immunization of all human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients against meningitis serotype ACWY due to recent outbreaks of meningitis C in homosexual men in the USA. Implementation of this recommendation in other countries, such as Austria is hindered by the scarce knowledge on the vaccine coverage. In this study the serostatus for meningococcus serogroup C was analyzed in 390 HIV-infected individuals residing in Austria. These individuals were representative for the Austrian HIV cohort regarding sex, ag…

Current management of juvenile dermatomyositis in Germany and Austria: an online survey of pediatric rheumatologists and pediatric neurologists.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) is a rare pediatric autoimmune disease with broad variations of the individual course. Data on the optimal management are mostly lacking. Currently treatment decisions are often based on experts' opinions. In order to develop consensus-based treatment strategies for JDM in Germany a survey was pursued to analyze the current clinical practice. METHODS: An online survey addressing all members of the Society for Pediatric Rheumatology (GKJR) in Germany and Austria and pediatric neurologists with expertise in JDM was performed in February/March of 2016. …

From Symptom to Diagnosis-The Prediagnostic Symptomatic Interval of Pediatric Central Nervous System Tumors in Austria.

BACKGROUND: Children with central nervous system (CNS) tumours may present with a multitude of symptoms, ranging from elevated intracranial pressure to focal neurological deficit. In everyday practice, some signs may be misleading, thereby causing prolonged prediagnostic symptomatic intervals. Prediagnostic symptomatic intervals are longer for pediatric brain tumors than for other childhood malignancies. This study evaluated prediagnostic symptomatic intervals and parental and diagnostic intervals for pediatric patients with CNS tumours in Austria. It also considered socioeconomic factors. ME…

Prevalence and incidence of toxoplasmosis: a retrospective analysis of mother-child examinations, Styria, Austria, 1995 to 2012.

In Austria, mandatory screening for the prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis stipulates a serological test for antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii as early as possible in pregnancy. In the case of a seronegative result, subsequent tests at intervals of 8 weeks are requested. We analysed serological data from Styria, an Austrian federal state, to determine the seroprevalence and incidence of Toxoplasma infections. The study included 353,599 tests from 103,316 women during 158,571 pregnancies from 1995 to 2012. The age-adjusted seroprevalence decreased from 43.3% in 1995 to 31.5% in 2012, wit…

Gonococcal infections in Austria: a long-term observation of prevalence and resistance profiles from 1999 to 2014.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The increase in minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of cephalosporins for Neisseria gonorrhoeae has given rise to concerns regarding potentially untreatable gonococcal infections. The goal was to ascertain the prevalence of gonorrhea in a Viennese patient group and determine resistance patterns. Another objective was to evaluate resistance profiles and MIC values of gonococcal isolates in an Austria-wide surveillance project. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1999 to 2014, 350,000 individuals were tested for gonococci at the Viennese Outpatient Clinic. In addition, fr…

Rapid spread and association of Schmallenberg virus with ruminant abortions and foetal death in Austria in 2012/2013.

Schmallenberg virus (SBV) has emerged in summer-autumn 2011 in north-western Europe. Since then, SBV has been continuously spreading over Europe, including Austria, where antibodies to SBV, as well as SBV genome, were first detected in autumn 2012. This study was performed to demonstrate the dynamics of SBV spread within Austria, after its probable first introduction in summer 2012. True seroprevalence estimates for cattle and small ruminates were calculated to demonstrate temporal and regional differences of infection. Furthermore, the probability of SBV genome detection in foetal tissues of …

Successful management of nosocomial ventriculitis and meningitis caused by extensively drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in Austria.

Nosocomial infections caused by the Gram-negative coccobacillus Acinetobacter baumannii have substantially increased over recent years. Because Acinetobacter is a genus with a tendency to quickly develop resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents, therapy is often complicated, requiring the return to previously used drugs. The authors report a case of meningitis due to extensively drug-resistant A baumannii in an Austrian patient who had undergone neurosurgery in northern Italy. The case illustrates the limits of therapeutic options in central nervous system infections caused by extensively d…

Driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol in Salzburg and Upper Austria during the years 2003-2007.

Until 2002 in Austria a blood sample could not be drawn due to regulations stipulated by the Austrian constitution. During the years 2003-2007 alcohol, pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs were analyzed in 1167 blood samples from cases of suspected and drugged drivers. In accordance with the findings of the EU-project Rosita, a wide variety of illicit drugs and medications could be found in blood samples of the drivers where cannabis (50%), opiates (20%), amphetamines (18%), cocaine (15%) and benzodiazepines (20%) were those with the highest prevalence. To enable police and medical officers to id…
