The results indicate that the current medical certification system is effective in maintaining a healthy pilot workforce.

Sequential fatigue fractures of the fourth, second, and third metatarsals in the same foot are reported for a military aviator in the absence of abnormal stresses or underlying bone disease. The likely etiological factor is altered foot biomechanics, as identified in pedobarographic assessment. We have reviewed the literature regarding multiple metatarsal stress fractures.

Isolated reports of patients, including aviators, with congenital complete heart block suggest a benign prognosis. However, prospective studies of adolescents and adults with congenital complete heart block reveal an unpredictable incidence of impairment of consciousness and sudden death. Congenital complete heart block is, therefore, a contraindication to professional pilot status.

Parachuting is a unique method of deploying troops. Accidents in parachuting are common, but usually carry minimal risk for severe injury. Most accidents occur during landing and injuries often affect the lower limbs and spine. Traumatic amputation of a limb is an extremely rare event in parachuting. We present a case of a parachutist who suffered a traumatic amputation of the left hand during jumping off the plane.

Surgery like civil aviation is a risk-prone occupation. Civil Aviation has reported a death rate of less than 1 in a million exposures. On the other hand, surgery has a reported mortality rate of 100 per million surgeries.
