The phagocytosis of capsulated vegetative cells of Bacillus anthracis in the mouse spleen was studied by thin sectioning techniques of electron microscopy. Mice were injected with autoclaved suspensions of capsulated and noncapsulated vegetative cells via the tail vein. The animals were killed 5, 10, and 30 min and 4 hr postinjection, with the central portion of the spleen being removed and procssed for electron microscopy. Fixation was with 2% KMnO(4) for 2 hr. Two Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic, motile, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacteria, designated CLL-3-40T and CLL-7-23, were isolated from coastal sediment sampled in Changyi, Shandong Province, PR China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that these strains were related to the genus Bacillus and close to six type strains of species within the Bacillus licheniformis group. A 67-year-old woman with a 2-day history of a fever, headache and disturbed consciousness was admitted to our hospital. Bacillus subtilis was isolated from both the cerebrospinal fluid and blood. She was cured by the administration of vancomycin. Next-generation sequencing identified the strain as B. subtilis var. natto, the same strain found in natto, which this patient ate daily. We suspected that some of the B. subtilis that caused the infection may have actually been B. subtilis var. natto.
