Bariatric surgery is an increasingly popular intervention for morbid obesity, defined as a BMI>40. Its propensity to cause rapid weight loss can alleviate, if not resolve, obesity's comorbidities. Until recently, people older than 65 have been excluded by age in most established criteria because of a perception of great risk. Recent studies demonstrate that some elders, however, can benefit from bariatric surgery, and the surgery can be performed safely. Surgeons currently perform two types of procedures: restrictive and/or malabsorptive. Immediate risks of surgery are identical to other surge

Bariatric surgery is an increasingly popular treatment for severe obesity. However, while rates of obesity are comparable across genders, women are much more likely to undergo bariatric surgery. Little research exists on gender differences among bariatric surgery candidates. This study examined gender differences and their correlates within a sample of 487 patients presenting for bariatric surgery. Results indicated that women were more depressed than men, dieted more, and were more likely to report that their weight interfered with feeling good about themselves. There were no differences in B

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Bariatric surgery represents an affective therapeutic alternative for patients with morbid obesity refractory to medical treatment. However, these surgical techniques increase the risk of producing a protein-energy hyponutrition or a selective deficit of some micronutrient. The aim of this work has been to analyze the anthropometrical, nutritional, digestive and cardiovascular risk factors changes and quality of life in patients with morbid obesity submitted to bariatric surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective descriptive study evaluating a group of patients

BACKGROUND: The role of upper endoscopy (EGD) in obese patients prior to bariatric surgery is controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic yield and cost of routine EGD before bariatric surgery.
METHODS: The medical records of consecutive obese patients who underwent EGD prior to bariatric surgery between May 2000 and September 2002 were reviewed. Two experienced endoscopists reviewed all EGD reports, and findings were divided into 4 groups based on predetermined criteria: group 0 (normal study), group 1 (abnormal findings that neither changed the surgical approach nor

As the prevalence of obesity and obesity-related disease among adolescents in the United States continues to increase, physicians are increasingly faced with the dilemma of determining the best treatment strategies for affected patients. This report offers an approach for the evaluation of adolescent patients' candidacy for bariatric surgery. In addition to anthropometric measurements and comorbidity assessments, a number of unique factors must be critically assessed among overweight youths. In an effort to reduce the risk of adverse medical and psychosocial outcomes and increase compliance an

BACKGROUND: Late dumping syndrome is a possible side-effect of gastric bypass. Hypoglycemic symptoms may develop 3-4 hours after certain types of foods. There may exist patients, however, who present hypoglycemia in the absence of dumping syndrome. The presence of only mild symptoms of hypoglycemia may make the evaluation of these patients difficult and delay the identification of other possible sources of hyperinsulinemia, including an insulinoma.
CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old woman underwent gastric bypass for continued weight gain and morbid obesity. After surgery, the patient had repeated ep

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic bariatric surgery is a challenging procedure with a high risk of technical misadventures that may increase postoperative morbidity. Routine intraoperative endoscopy may reduce postoperative morbidity. This article reviews our 6-year experience.
METHODS: From April 1995 to September 2001, we performed 825 laparoscopic bariatric procedures: 743 roux gastric bypasses, 55 vertical banded gastroplasties, 18 laparoscopic adjustable gastric bands, and 9 gastric pacemakers. All the patients underwent flexible endoscopy by the primary surgeon at completion of the operation to

BackgroundEffects of preoperative weight loss on bariatric surgery outcomes have been previously studied, but the true association remains unclear. We aim to determine whether duration of a standardized preoperative liquid diet has significant effects on postoperative outcomes.MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted on 576 patients categorized by preoperative diet duration (2-week vs 4-week). Differences in characteristics were assessed using Pearson Chi-square test for categorical variables and Student's t-test for independent groups for continuous data. Least squares multivariable line

Although bariatric surgery (BS) is a well-established and effective method for treating obesity, it carries the risk of developing psychiatric complications in the postoperative period. This narrative review is based on a literature search in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, covering studies published between January 2010 and September 2025. This review comprehensively examines various psychiatric conditions that may emerge following BS, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, psychotic disorders, alcohol use disorders, and substance use disorders. The neurobiological and psychosoc

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Optimal cefazolin dosing for surgical prophylaxis in patients with severe obesity remains controversial, particularly regarding tissue exposure at the surgical site. Plasma concentrations may not reliably reflect pharmacologically active antibiotic levels in target tissues. This study aims to characterize total and calculated unbound concentrations of cefazolin in subcutaneous adipose tissue, dermis and plasma in patients with severe obesity undergoing bariatric surgery, and to assess pharmacodynamic target attainment across clinically relevant MIC thresholds.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: The global epidemic of obesity presents a challenge to physicians in all fields, as it impacts multiple organ systems and may hinder access to surgical or therapeutic interventions, yet reservations regarding referral for metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) persist. In this narrative review, we aimed to examine emerging evidence guiding the shift of what were once considered contraindications, to indications of MBS and to shed light on the future projections of MBS. RECENT FINDINGS: The technical advancements witnessed in the surgical field over the years, as well as t

BACKGROUND: Patients with obesity are at a greater risk of developing more aggressive forms of prostate cancer. Bariatric surgery has been demonstrated to reduce that risk; however, the exact mechanism of this protective effect is not known. We examined the relationship between bariatric surgery and prostate cancer screening rates using a national insurance database.
STUDY DESIGN: Using the Merative MarketScan Database, 13,662 men aged 50 to 65 years in the US who underwent bariatric surgery were identified and compared with 3 control groups who did not undergo bariatric surgery, stratified b

OBJECTIVES: Obesity is considered a controversial risk factor for developing RA and the association between weight change and RA incidence is inconclusive. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of weight loss after bariatric surgery on the incidence of RA.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all patients who underwent bariatric surgery between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2015 as documented in the Maccabi Healthcare Services (MHS) database. These patients were matched with a control group based on age and sex. The two groups were followed until the earliest of the

Obesity is associated with menstrual dysfunction, anovulation, and infertility, particularly in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This narrative review summarizes evidence on the effects of bariatric surgery [focusing on sleeve gastrectomy (SG) Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB)] on female reproductive function and fertility outcomes. Developed according to SANRA (Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles) principles, a structured search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (English language; inception-30 September 2025) was conducted, using fertility-related terms (e.g.,

INTRODUCTION: Bariatric surgery, also known as metabolic surgery, is known to improve the metabolic profile of morbidly obese patients in many aspects, thereby improving their quality of life. Obesity is typically associated with subtle changes in thyroid homeostasis. Bariatric procedures, particularly sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, are associated with reductions in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and total triiodothyronine (TT3) levels during the first postoperative year. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of bariatric surgery on thyroid

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity are among the most important risk factors for dementia. Although weight loss is an important preventive strategy, the impact of metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) on dementia risk remains contradictory.
METHODS: We conducted a propensity score matched study using nationwide, high-quality clinical registries to compare the outcomes in patients with obesity and T2D who underwent MBS with matched controls who did not undergo surgery.
RESULTS: Over a mean follow-up of 9 years, MBS was associated with a reduced risk of dementia (15-year cumulativ
