A case of multiple clear cell acanthomas is described with a review of the literature. This benign glycogen-rich epidermal tumor is generally unable to accept melanin and lacks phosphorylase or cytochrome oxidase activity. However, the basement membrane zone appears antigenically normal, as documented by the presence of epidermolysis bullosa acquisita antigen, bullous pemphigoid antigen, heparan sulfate proteoglycan, type IV collagen, and laminin by immunofluorescence microscopy.

Serum pemphigoid antibody (BPA) was used to demonstrate the intraepidermal location of human pigmented naevi. Immunofluorescence was predominant along the epidermal-dermal junction and around the naevus nests seemingly located in the dermis. Serial sections showed that these naevus nests were intraepidermal. The immuno-gold labelling technique for electron microscopy, was improved by using uranyl acetate with no osmium tetroxide or lead citrate. 73 patients with bullous pemphigoid were studied to examine the association between serum anti-basement membrane zone (anti-BMZ) antibody and malignancy. Indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) was performed on the sera. 37 patients had positive IIF for anti-BMZ antibodies, ranging in titer from 1:20 to 1:10,230. The occurrence of the basement membrane (BM) glycoprotein laminin was investigated in 91 malignant breast tumors and in 359 axillary lymph nodes of which 70 contained metastases. Large gaps in basement membrane (BM) occur during organ remodelling and cancer cell invasion. Whether dividing cells, which temporarily reduce their attachment to BM, influence these breaches is unknown. Here we analyse uterine-vulval attachment during development across 21 species of rhabditid nematodes and find that the BM gap that forms between these organs is always bounded by a non-dividing vulval cell. BACKGROUND: We investigated basement membrane (BM) disruption and the distribution of mast cells (MCs) and T cell subsets, in oral lichen planus (OLP) and normal buccal mucosa (NBM) using immunohistochemistry. In OLP, there were increased numbers of tryptase+ MCs in areas of BM disruption (P < 0.05).
