Examining Changes in Behavioral, Emotional, and Tic Symptoms in a Pediatric Sample in the First Year of the Pandemic.

Previous studies have documented worsening behavioral and emotional symptoms in children during the COVID-19 pandemic, although much focus has been on internalizing conditions with relatively short follow-up time. We examined a range of symptoms before and during the pandemic through mid-2021 in a primary care sample. Children 4-17 (n = 181) who completed emotional and behavioral assessments prior to the pandemic and then completed a follow-up assessment during the pandemic were included in our analyses. We examined changes in broad-based and clinical scales, including the Behavior Assessment

Cognitive, behavioral, and affective mechanisms underlying the efficacy of Applied Relaxation in reducing psychopathological symptoms: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the cognitive, behavioral, and affective mechanisms underlying the efficacy of Applied Relaxation (AR) in reducing psychopathological symptoms. AR is a cognitive-behavioral technique that allows for rapid relaxation at the first sign of stress or tension in daily life. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in 277 adults (18-55 years) with elevated symptoms of depression, anxiety, or stress but without a 12-month DSM-5 mental disorder at study entry. Participants were randomized to an intervention group receiving AR training (10 weeks, N = 139) an

Diagnoses and Treatment of Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia Among Racially and Ethnically Diverse Persons Living with Dementia.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and prescribed central nervous system (CNS) active drugs to treat them are prevalent among persons living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (PLWD) and lead to negative outcomes for PLWD and their caregivers. Yet, little is known about racial/ethnic disparities in diagnosis and use of drugs to treat BPSD. OBJECTIVE: Quantify racial/ethnic disparities in BPSD diagnoses and CNS-active drug use among community-dwelling PLWD. METHODS: We used a retrospective cohort of community-dwelling Medicare Fee-for-Service bene

Effect of virtual-reality-based education program for managing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia: A randomized controlled trial.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of the virtual-reality-based education program (VR-EduBPSD) for managing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Sixty-six family caregivers of people with dementia were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group following a 1:1 ratio. The experimental group received VR-EduBPSD while the control group received analogous paper-based educational materials. The outcome measures were competence in managing BPSD, dyadic relationship, caring self-efficacy, attitudes toward dementia, and behavior management skill. Only the 'a

Machine learning-based predictive models for the occurrence of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia: model development and validation.

The behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are challenging aspects of dementia care. This study used machine learning models to predict the occurrence of BPSD among community-dwelling older adults with dementia. We included 187 older adults with dementia for model training and 35 older adults with dementia for external validation. Demographic and health data and premorbid personality traits were examined at the baseline, and actigraphy was utilized to monitor sleep and activity levels. A symptom diary tracked caregiver-perceived symptom triggers and the daily occurrence of 12

Women's Behavioral Coping Responses During Sexual Assault: Association With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms and the Moderating Role of Alexithymia.

We examined the associations between women's behavioral coping responses during sexual assault and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and the moderating role of alexithymia in college women (N  =  152). Immobilized responses (b  =  0.52, p < .001), childhood SA (b  =  0.18, p  =  .01), and alexithymia (b  =  0.34, p < .001) significantly predicted PTSD. The interaction between immobilized responses and alexithymia was significant (b  =  0.39, p  =  .002), indicating a stronger association for those higher in alexithymia. Immobilized responses are associated with PTSD, particularly

Altered Behavioral Responses Show GABA Sensitivity in Muscleblind-Like 2-Deficient Mice: Implications for CNS Symptoms in Myotonic Dystrophy.

Considerable evidence from mouse models and human postmortem brain suggests loss of Muscleblind-like protein 2 (MBNL2) function in brain is a major driver of CNS symptoms in Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1). Increased hypersomnia, fatigue, and surgical complications associated with general anesthesia suggest possible sensitivity to GABAergic inhibition in DM1. To test the hypothesis that MBNL2 depletion leads to behavioral sensitivity to GABAA receptor (GABAA-R) modulation, Mbnl2 knock-out (KO) and wild-type (WT) littermates were treated with the anesthetic sevoflurane, the benzodiazepine diaze

Gamified Mobile Computerized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Japanese University Students With Depressive Symptoms: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows that computerized self-help interventions are effective for reducing symptoms of depression. One such intervention, SPARX, is a gamified mobile computerized cognitive behavioral therapy (cCBT) developed for adolescents in New Zealand, which was shown to be as effective as usual care for young people with mild-to-moderate symptoms of depression. However, gamified cCBT has not yet been tested in Japan. OBJECTIVE: This trial is designed to investigate whether a Japanese-adapted version of SPARX improves depressive symptoms in Japanese university students with mild-to-m

Effect of Serotonin 1A Agonists and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors on Behavioral and Nighttime Respiratory Symptoms in Rett Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome is characterized by psychomotor regression during early childhood, autistic-like behaviors, and aberrant breathing patterns. Dysfunction of the serotonergic system has been postulated to play a role in the pathophysiology of these symptoms. PATIENT DESCRIPTION: We present an 11-year-old girl with Rett syndrome who exhibited marked respiratory symptoms, including frequent apneic events during sleep. She had been treated for these respiratory symptoms using noninvasive positive pressure ventilation since age six years. Treatment with serotonin 1A receptor agonist was i

Activation of serotonin 5-HT(2C) receptor suppresses behavioral sensitization and naloxone-precipitated withdrawal symptoms in heroin-treated mice.

Abuse and dependence to heroin has evolved into a global epidemic as a significant clinical and societal problem with devastating consequences. Repeated exposure to heroin can induce long-lasting behavioral sensitization and withdrawal. Pharmacological activation of 5-HT2C receptors (5-HT2CRs) suppresses psychostimulant-induced drug-seeking and behavioral sensitization. The present study examined the effect of a selective 5-HT2CR agonist lorcaserin on behavioral sensitization and naloxone-precipitated withdrawal symptoms in heroin-treated mice. Male mice received heroin (1.0 mg/kg, s.c.) twice

Neuroprotective effect of lutein against 3-nitropropionic acid-induced Huntington's disease-like symptoms: possible behavioral, biochemical, and cellular alterations.

3-Nitropropionic acid (3-NP) induces cellular energy deficit and oxidative stress-related neurotoxicity via an irreversible inhibition of mitochondrial complex II enzyme, succinate dehydrogenase. Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurological disorder characterized by cognitive and motor dysfunctions. Lutein is a well-known antioxidant used in the management of oxidative stress related diseases. Clinical trials have supported the beneficial effect of lutein in Alzheimer's disease. The present study was designed to explore possible neuroprotective effects of lutein on 3-NP-induced mitochondrial dy

Late prenatal immune activation in mice leads to behavioral and neurochemical abnormalities relevant to the negative symptoms of schizophrenia.

Based on the human epidemiological association between prenatal infection and higher risk of schizophrenia, a number of animal models have been established to explore the long-term brain and behavioral consequences of prenatal immune challenge. Accumulating evidence suggests that the vulnerability to specific forms of schizophrenia-related abnormalities is critically influenced by the precise timing of the prenatal immunological insult. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis whether late prenatal immune challenge in mice may induce long-term behavioral and neurochemical dysfunctions pr

Exploring the temporal associations between avoidance behavior and cognitions during the course of cognitive behavioral therapy for clients with symptoms of social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVES: In cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD), avoidance behavior (AB) and cognitions (COG) are two important targets of intervention, but so far no studies have directly examined their relative importance. By means of cross-lagged panel models (CLPM), we examined their temporal associations and impacts on outcome in clients with symptoms of SAD while addressing typical methodological challenges. METHOD: We used data from the first six therapy sessions in a sample of 428 primary care clients (mean [SD] age = 34.6 [12.2], 34.3% men), participating in the P

Patterns of depressive symptoms and social relating behaviors differ over time from other behavioral domains for young people with Down syndrome.

People with intellectual disabilities are at a higher risk for experiencing behavioral, emotional, and psychiatric problems in comparison with the general population. People with Down syndrome have been reported as experiencing fewer behavioral problems than others with intellectual disability, although still at a greater level than the non-intellectually disabled population, except for depression and Alzheimer disease. The aim of this study was to describe the trajectories of subscales of behavior, including depressive symptoms, communication disturbance, anxiety, disruptiveness, and social r
