In order to study cerebral activity related to preparation and execution of movement, evoked and induced brain electrical activities were co … premotor, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices. The most frequent observed activity was ERD in the beta rhythm; alpha ERS and ERD were also present. Significant differences between the two tasks appeared in several frontal areas--in the dorsolateral and ventrolateral prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortices (BA 9, 45, 11), and in the temporal neocortex (BA 21). …

The circadian rhythm of blood pressure derived from continuous recordings of blood pressure in hypertensive subjects, provides an accurate and repeatable method of describing blood pressure on a temporal scale which can be used to evaluate the effects of anti-hypertensive drugs. It has been postulated that the rapid rise of pressure between 0600 and 1000 hr is due to intrinsic sympathetic activity mediated at the peripheral arteriole by alpha-adrenoreceptors. Drugs which block beta-adrenoreceptors do not appear to influence blood pressure at this time, no matter how frequently they are adminis

In sum, systolic dysfunction of the ventricle associated with left ventricular outlet obstruction and often with mitral valve regurgitation may be improved by myotomy, myomectomy, mitral valve replacement, and perhaps by the creation of left bundle branch block via DDD right ventricular pacing. Diastolic dysfunction of the ventricle may be improved by prolonging the diastolic filling period, shortening the isovolumic relaxation period with calcium channel blocking drugs, or perhaps by altering the atrioventricular activation time with a DDD pacemaker. The symptoms and complications of associat

The cause of respiratory arrest in acute asthma is not known. By its nature, respiratory arrest is difficult to study clinically. The possible causes of respiratory arrest include cardiovascular dysfunction, respiratory muscle fatigue, and central respiratory failure. We used a dog model of respiratory arrest in acute bronchoconstriction that examined the effects of hypoxemia and intrinsic loading in an attempt to establish the mechanism. Our hypothesis was that, in a setting of hypoxemia and intrinsic loading similar to human fatal asthma, respiratory arrest is caused by a central respiratory

Thyrotoxic crisis (thyroid storm) is a severe form of hyperthyroidism. It has a wide range of symptoms, including cardiovascular manifestations that can be life-threatening and require prompt management. Cardiac manifestations of thyroid storm include hypertension, tachycardia, congestive heart failure, cardiac ischemia, and atrial fibrillation. Standard therapeutic approaches of thyroid storm are based on the use of thionamides, corticosteroids, and nonselective beta-blockers to inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis and release while also blocking thyroxin's peripheral effects. This approach is a

BACKGROUND: Motor imagery can elicit brain oscillations in Rolandic mu rhythm and central beta rhythm, both originating in the sensorimotor cortex. In contrast with simple limb motor imagery, less work was reported about compound limb motor imagery which involves several parts of limbs. The goal of this study was to investigate the differences of the EEG patterns between simple limb motor imagery and compound limb motor imagery, and discuss the separability of multiple types of mental tasks.
METHODS: Ten subjects participated in the experiment involving three tasks of simple limb motor imager…

A 41-year-old man with no relevant cardiac history presented for evaluation of episodic syncope. Electrocardiography showed sinus rhythm with right bundle-branch block and Q waves in leads II, III, and aVF. Subsequent exercise treadmill testing and technetium 99m sestamibi study revealed a reversible posterior defect. Coronary angiography later showed a right coronary artery that arose from the left coronary sinus--an anomaly that has been associated with angina, myocardial infarction, and sudden cardiac death. After being informed of the potential risks and options associated with this anomal

A female infant with isolated noncompaction of ventricular myocardium who developed ventricular tachyarrhythmia is described. Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome was shown by electrocardiography. At 9 months of age, the patient suddenly developed cardiac arrest. Electrocardiography following resuscitation with DC cardioversion demonstrated sinus rhythm without delta wave. The QT interval was normal. Frequent premature ventricular captures caused ventricular fibrillation. DC cardioversion was necessary to terminate frequent attacks of ventricular fibrillation until the introduction of beta blockers

A case of long QT syndrome diagnosed in the early neonatal period is described. This full-term female baby had intermittent atrioventricular (AV) block and ventricular tachycardia detected antenatally at the gestational age of 26 weeks. Sinus rhythm with prolonged QT interval (QTc = 0.636 sec) was found soon after birth. She developed variable degree of AV block with alternating left and right bundle branch block, which suggested the presence of multilevel AV block. Her mother had no lupus autoantibodies. Auditory brain stem evoked potential was normal. Family study revealed QT prolongation in

Type II thyroxine 5'-deiodinase (5'-D) activity in both pineal and Harderian glands of the Swiss mouse was studied. Pineal 5'-D activity exhibited a nyctohemeral profile with a maximal peak value at 05.00 h, which coincides with that for pineal melatonin production. However, no rhythm of 5'-D activity in the Harderian gland could be found. In pineal gland, light at night inhibited the nocturnal increase in 5'-D activity, while isoproterenol, a beta-adrenergic agonist, could not stimulate the enzyme. In the Harderian gland, neither darkness, nor light or night, or isoproterenol were capable of

The development of effective drugs for chronic lung disease, especially bronchodilator aerosols, has been a boon to patients and physicians alike, but these agents also may provoke arrhythmias. Fluorocarbon propellants, once regarded as harmless, are now known to disrupt cardiac function, sensitizing the heart to the arrhythmic effects of sympathomimetic amines. Catecholamine drugs as a group have a strong impact on heart rate and contractility. But the danger of rhythm disturbances often can be reduced by cutting the dosage or choosing a preparation with more beta 2 activity. Methylxanthines,

For the management of acute aortic syndromes, there is a major interest of a multidisciplinary decision: resuscitator, cardiologist, radiologist, vascular surgeons. Do not delay the thoracic computed tomography: the gold standard in such an urgent situation. Use intravenous beta-blocade therapy anytime it is possible. At the acute phase: systolic blood pressure target is < 120 mmHg, and the heart rhythm target is < 60 bpm. Type A acute aortic dissection is a surgical emergency. Type B acute aortic dissection is a medical emergency and need a management of peripheral ischemia and/or organ failu

BACKGROUND: CVT-510, N-(3(R)-tetrahydrofuranyl)-6-aminopurine riboside, is a selective A(1)-adenosine receptor agonist with potential potent antiarrhythmic effects in tachycardias involving the atrioventricular (AV) node. This study, the first in humans, was designed to determine the effects of CVT-510 on AV nodal conduction and hemodynamics.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients in sinus rhythm with normal AV nodal function at electrophysiologic study (n = 32) received a single intravenous bolus of CVT-510. AH and HV intervals were measured during sinus rhythm and during atrial pacing at 1, 5, 10, 1

BACKGROUND: In resting-state EEG, the ratio between frontal power in the slow theta frequency band and the fast beta frequency band (the theta/beta ratio, TBR) has previously been negatively related to attentional control. Also, increased theta and reduced beta power were observed during mind wandering (MW) compared to episodes of focused attention. Thus, increased resting-state frontal TBR could be related to MW, suggesting that previously observed relationships between TBR and attentional control could reflect MW episodes increasing the average resting state TBR in people with low attentiona

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia and has an increasing incidence. The neuropathogenesis of AD is suggested to be a result of the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides in the brain. To date, Aβ-induced cognitive and neurophysiologic impairments have not been illuminated sufficiently. Therefore, we aimed to examine how spontaneous brain activities of rats changed by injection of increasing Aβ doses into the brain hemispheres, and whether these changes could be used as a new biomarker for the early diagnosis of the AD. Rats were randomized into following groups: s

The experiments on rats have shown that the effect of millimeter range electromagnetic radiation on the bioelectric brain activity is dependent on the initial functional state of central nervous system. Microwaves are able to cause a nonspecific electroencephalographic reaction of synchronization and probably the lower the bioelectric brain process dynamics of active rats. Enrichment of electrocorticograms with high-frequency rhythms and increase in degree of bioelectric brain dynamics can be observed in narcosis conditions. The appearance of biological resonance in the brain of narcotized rat

OBJECTIVE: Melatonin is a mediator in the establishment of the circadian rhythm of biological processes. It is produced in the pineal gland mainly during the night by stimulation of adrenergic beta1- and alpha1-receptors. Sleep disturbances are common side-effects of beta-blockers. The influence of specific beta-blockade as well as that of combined alpha-and beta-blockade on melatonin production has not been investigated in humans before.
METHODS: We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study in 15 healthy volunteers. Subjects received single oral doses of 40 m
