Neurodevelopmental outcomes of very low birth weight and extremely low birth weight infants at 18 months of corrected age associated with prenatal risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Very premature infants occasionally have neurodevelopmental disabilities. However, there have been quite limited data on prenatal risk factors associated with their neurodevelopmental outcomes. AIM: To clarify the relationship between prenatal risk factors and neurodevelopmental outcomes of very premature infants. STUDY DESIGN: The study design is a retrospective review. SUBJECTS: One hundred seventy Japanese women with a singleton pregnancy and their infants whose birth weight being less than 1500 g were included. We classified those infants into 118 appropriate for gestational…

Low birth weight in Aboriginal babies--a need for rethinking Aboriginal women's pregnancies and birthing.

Low birth weight in Aboriginal babies has become a persistent quandary as their average birth weight continues to be lower than that of non-Aboriginal babies. Arguments, reviews and research abound to explain this difference which is deemed unacceptable and needing resolution. A précis review of current theories and findings around low birth weight in Aboriginal babies is presented as a background for much needed alternative considerations of this issue. The low birth weight dilemma requires urgent rethinking of Aboriginal women's experiences and feelings of their pregnancies and possible effe…

Physical and social predictors for pre-term births and low birth weight infants in Taiwan.

The purpose of this study was to examine the risk factors associated with pre-term labor (PTL) (< 37 gestational weeks) and low birth weight (LBW) (< 2500 gm) infants in a healthy Taiwanese population. From December 1998 through June 1999, a total of 633 healthy pregnant women were recruited at three teaching hospitals in Taipei. Using a prospective study design, the pregnancy outcome information was followed up by telephone or from medical records during the first month postpartum. Data were statistically analyzed by multiple logistic regression. The prevalence of premature births was 5.4%, a…

Associations of severe adverse perinatal outcomes among continuous birth weight percentiles on different birth weight charts: a secondary analysis of a cluster randomized trial.

OBJECTIVE: To identify neonatal risk for severe adverse perinatal outcomes across birth weight centiles in two Dutch and one international birth weight chart. BACKGROUND: Growth restricted newborns have not reached their intrinsic growth potential in utero and are at risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality. There is no golden standard for the confirmation of the diagnosis of fetal growth restriction after birth. Estimated fetal weight and birth weight below the 10th percentile are generally used as proxy for growth restriction. The choice of birth weight chart influences the specific cut-of…

Comparison of birth weight corrected for gestational age and birth weight alone in prediction of development of childhood leukemia and central nervous system tumors.

INTRODUCTION: High birth weight (HBW) is an established risk factor for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The purpose of this study was to evaluate if birth weight (BW) corrected-for-gestational age is a better predictor than BW alone for occurrence of ALL and other malignancies in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Birth certificate data of 2,254 children with cancer who were younger than 5 years old at diagnosis and registered at Texas Cancer Registry during 1995-2003 were compared to 11,734 age-matched controls. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare models with BW…

Association of maternal birth weight with the risk of low birth weight and small-for-gestational-age in offspring: A prospective single-center cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Although low birth weight in Japan has slightly increased over the past several decades, the association between maternal birth weight and pregnancy outcomes remains poorly understood. METHODS: In this hospital-based, prospective cohort study conducted at the National Center for Child Health and Development, we obtained information on pregnant women's birth weight via their maternal and child health handbook. We analyzed 944 women born at term after dividing them into five categories according to their birth weight: <2500 g, 2500-2999 g, 3000-3499 g, 3500-3999 g, and ≥4000 g. Mult…

Correlation between tobacco control policies and preterm births and low birth weight in Europe.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the correlation between tobacco control policies- particularly smoking bans in work and public places-and the prevalence of preterm births and low birth weight in the European countries. METHODS: This is an ecological study and the unit of analysis set at the country level. Tobacco control data in Europe were obtained for the years 2010 and 2013 as measured by the Tobacco Control Scale (TCS), which reflects the level of implementation of tobacco control policies. Prevalence data for preterm births and low birth weight were obtained from two sources: the European Perinatal…

The association between periodontitis and pre-term birth and/or low birth weight: a literature review.

Infections have been strongly associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes like pre-term and/or low birth weight (PTLBW). There is substantial evidence on the direct association of genito-urinary infections and the incidence of PTLBW. Numerous cases of adverse pregnancy outcomes without maternal genito-urinary infection but nevertheless high levels of the tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in the amniotic fluid, have been recorded. These findings alluded to the presence of infection elsewhere in the body. This paper reviews the literature on the association betw…

Birth and developmental correlates of birth weight in a sample of children with potential sensory processing disorder.

BACKGROUND: Most research examining birth history (i.e. related birth complications) and developmental milestone achievement follow outcomes for infants at-risk with very specific birth weight categories and gestational age classifications. The purpose of this study was to examine how birth weight relates to infants' birth histories and developmental milestone achievement when they fall into a variety of birth weight and gestational age categories. METHODS: In the current study, we examined birth histories and onset ages for developmental milestones by analyzing a convenience sample of anonym…

Weight gain and spontaneous preterm birth: the role of race or ethnicity and previous preterm birth.

OBJECTIVE: To study how the relationship between gestational weight gain and spontaneous preterm birth interacts with maternal race or ethnicity and previous preterm birth status. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of singleton births to women of normal or low prepregnancy body mass index. Gestational weight gain was measured as total weight gain divided by weeks of gestation at delivery, and weight gain was categorized as low (less than 0.27 kg/wk,), normal (0.27-0.52 kg/wk), or high (more than 0.52 kg/wk). Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed on the relationship

Mortality in low birth weight infants according to level of neonatal care at hospital of birth.

OBJECTIVE: In 1976, the Committee on Perinatal Health recommended that hospitals with no neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or intermediate NICUs transfer high-risk mothers and infants that weigh <2000 g to a regional NICU. This standard was based on expert opinion and has not been validated carefully. This study evaluated the effect of NICU level and patient volume at the hospital of birth on neonatal mortality of infants with a birth weight (BW) of <2000 g. METHODS: Birth certificates of 16 732 singleton infants who had a BW of <2000 g and were born in nonfederal hospitals in California in…

Weight-Based Estimation of Insertion Length of the Nasogastric Tube in Extremely Low Birth-Weight Infants.

BACKGROUND: Nasogastric (NG) tubes are used in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for various indications. However, evidence of the best practice for estimating the NG tube insertion length in extremely low birth-weight (ELBW) infants is limited. PURPOSE: To determine a weight-based estimation formula of NG tube length in ELBW infants. METHODS: This prospective study was performed at a single-center level III neonatal intensive care unit. Low birth-weight infants admitted between May 2009 and May 2010 who required radiography for clinical reasons were included. Radiographs of participan

The correlation between weight gain and PICC tip shift in the very low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) is one of the important ways to maintain nutrition in premature infants, especially for very low birth weight infants. There are studies have shown that as premature babies grow up after birth, the tip of the PICC will shift away from the heart. When the catheter remove from the central vein, the risk of complications is suddenly increased. Therefore, it is important to predict the position of catheter tip. METHODS: Select the very low birth weight infant (VLBW) infants who used PICC in our hospital from April 2017 to August 2018. And …
