Combined effects of bisphenol A and cadmium on growth and nitrate assimilation of soybean seedling roots.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and cadmium (Cd) pollution exist simultaneously in many regions. However, little information is available regarding the combined effects of BPA and Cd pollution on plants. Plant roots are in direct contact with the soil, which is an important compartment of BPA and Cd. In the present study, the effects of combined BPA and Cd pollution on soybean seedling roots were evaluated in pot experiments. Combined treatment with BPA and Cd at low concentrations (1.5 mg/kg BPA and 0.2 mg/kg Cd) improved soybean seedling root growth. However, other combined BPA and Cd treatments, includin

Bisphenol A exposure alters developmental gene expression in the fetal rhesus macaque uterus.

Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure results in numerous developmental and functional abnormalities in reproductive organs in rodent models, but limited data are available regarding BPA effects in the primate uterus. To determine if maternal oral BPA exposure affects fetal uterine development in a non-human primate model, pregnant rhesus macaques carrying female fetuses were exposed orally to 400 µg/kg BPA or vehicle control daily from gestation day (GD) 50-100 or GD100-165. Fetal uteri were collected at the completion of treatment (GD100 or GD165); tissue histology, cell proliferation, and expression o

Cd-doped ZnO quantum dots-based immunoassay for the quantitative determination of bisphenol A.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant in food products and aquatic ecosystems. Its endocrine and developmental toxicity presents a serious concern to human health and an effective high-throughput method for its detection is desirable. In this paper, water-soluble quantum dots (QDs) have been conjugated covalently with BPA antibodies and the conjugate has been utilized in a competitive fluorescence-linked immunoassay (FLISA). Cd-doped ZnO QDs were functionalized with poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers, as evidenced by ultraviolet absorption spectrum and fluorescence emiss

Levels of bisphenol-A in thermal paper receipts from Belgium and estimation of human exposure.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a commonly used color developer in thermal paper. In this application, BPA is present in its free, unbound form and can be readily released, making thermal paper a potential source for human exposure. In this study, BPA was determined in 44 thermal paper samples collected in Belgium. BPA was detected in all the samples; 73% of the samples had concentrations between 0.9% and 2.1% (between 9 and 21 mg BPA/g paper), while the remaining 27% of the samples had concentrations below 0.01% (0.1mg BPA/g paper). The BPA concentrations measured in thermal paper were comparable with t

Influence of the presence of heavy metals and surface-active compounds on the sorption of bisphenol A to sediment.

The effects of different heavy metals (Cd, Pb), cationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), anionic surfactant sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) and the chemistry of the solution (pH and ionic strength) on the sorption of bisphenol A (BPA) to sediment were studied. Results showed that the presence of Cd and Pb caused a significant increase on the sorption of BPA to sediment and the sorption isotherms were in good agreement with Freundlich equation. The effect of surfactants on the adsorption of BPA onto sediment was found to strongly depend on the type of the surfactants. T

Dynamic changes in dopaminergic neurotransmission induced by a low concentration of bisphenol-A in neurones and astrocytes.

One of the most common chemicals that behaves as an endocrine disruptor is the compound 4,4'-isopronylidenediphenol, called bisphenol-A (BPA). We previously reported that prenatal and postnatal exposure to BPA potentiated central dopaminergic neurotransmission, resulting in supersensitivity to psychostimulant-induced pharmacological actions. Many recent findings have supported the idea that astrocytes, which are a subpopulation of glial cells, play a critical role in neuronal transmission in the central nervous system. The present study aimed to investigate the role of neurone-astrocyte commun

Associations of prenatal exposure to bisphenols and phthalates with the fetoplacental ratio in the New York University Children's Health and Environment Study (NYU CHES).

Fetoplacental ratio (FPR), the ratio of birthweight (BW) to placental weight (PW), indicates placental efficiency. Changes in FPR are linked to poor pregnancy outcomes and child health risks. Bisphenols and phthalates are endocrine disruptors found in plastics and personal care products that can cross the placenta and have been linked to pregnancy complications and adverse child health outcomes. We examined prenatal exposure to these chemicals in relation to FPR as a possible explanation for these risks. Our analysis included 393 participants in the New York University Children's Health and En…

Bisphenols as promoters of the dysregulation of cellular junction proteins of the blood-testis barrier in experimental animals: A systematic review of the literature.

Daily, people are exposed to chemicals and environmental compounds such as bisphenols (BPs). These substances are present in more than 80% of human fluids. Human exposure to BPs is associated with male reproductive health disorders. Some of the main targets of BPs are intercellular junction proteins of the blood-testis barrier (BTB) in Sertoli cells because BPs alter the expression or induce aberrant localization of these proteins. In this systematic review, we explore the effects of BP exposure on the expression of BTB junction proteins and the characteristics of in vivo studies to identify p…

Dual-readout smartphone-assisted and spectrophotometric colorimetric nanosensor for enzymeless bisphenol A detection.

A proof-of-concept approach is introduced that uses silver nanoparticles modified with Epimedium plant extract (EE-AgNPs) for BPA detection. The EE-AgNPs aggregate in the presence of BPA, demonstrating a measurable color change. This color change is monitored via a smartphone, enabling the prompt on-site determination of BPA. The sensor exhibited a linear response within the range 0.1-50 µM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 22 nM, which is below the thresholds set by the United States Food and Drug Administration, the National Health and Family Planning Commission of China, and European Union'

Deglycosylation Enhances the Toxicity of Plant-Derived Glycosyl Bisphenol A during Gastrointestinal Digestion.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most used plasticizers and a known endocrine disrupting chemical. In plants, BPA is easily conjugated to form conjugates such as glycosyl BPA, and humans can be exposed to such conjugates when ingesting BPA-contaminated plant foods. This study considered the potential of deconjugation of glycosyl BPA in a simulated human gastrointestinal tract system and evaluated the subsequent changes in biological activity using the Caco-2 colon cell model. Glycosyl BPA was found in both soil and lettuce with concentrations ranging from not detected (ND) to 82.51 ng/g dry wei

Bisphenol A disrupts mitochondrial homeostasis and promotes metabolic alterations in cervical cancer cells.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic endocrine-disrupting chemical, has been implicated in several diseases, including cancer. However, its effects on mitochondrial function in cervical cancer (CC) remain poorly understood. We investigated the effects of BPA on mitochondrial structure and function in SiHa and CaSki CC cell lines. Confocal microscopy revealed that BPA (1 nM-1 µM) disrupted mitochondrial morphology, increased circularity (*p < 0.05), and reduced branch length and content. BPA increased mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) and Ca2⁺ levels, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and mito

Polydiacetylene (PDA) coated paper-based fluorescence sensor for the detection and quantification of bisphenol.

Bisphenol (BPA) is a common environmental contaminant found in water, food, packaging, and human biological samples, raising significant health concerns due to its endocrine-disrupting properties, particularly its interference with estrogen receptors. We have developed a novel, portable paper-based sensor that utilizes a polydiacetylene (PDA) dye coated on filter paper. This sensor exhibits a distinct, concentration-dependent color change from blue to red when exposed to BPA. The colorimetric and fluorescence responses are driven by hydrogen bonding interactions between BPA's phenolic hydroxyl

Bisphenol A and its analogues in thyroid diseases: Evidence from dysfunction, autoimmunity, and cancer.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues are widely used industrial chemicals in the production of polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins, and related polymeric materials. Their extensive production and application have led to pervasive environmental contamination, enabling human exposure via ingestion, inhalation, and dermal absorption. As endocrine disruptors, BPA and its analogues (such as bisphenol S and bisphenol F) can influence thyroid homeostasis through interference with hormone synthesis, metabolism, and receptor signaling pathways. Recent studies suggest that exposure to bisphenols may con…

Bisphenol A remodels brown adipose tissue via apoptosis, whitening, and inflammatory stress.

Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure may be particularly detrimental to brown adipose tissue (BAT) due to its unique cellular composition, lifelong thermogenic function, and higher BPA accumulation than white adipose tissue, yet the mechanisms by which BPA affects BAT remain unclear. In this study, BPA exposure for six weeks in male mice remodeled the interscapular adipose tissue depot by reducing BAT mass and increasing white adipose tissue, with minimal impact on overall depot weight. The decrease in BAT substantially resulted from increased apoptosis and whitening of brown adipocytes, characterized b

The dual toxicity of bisphenol A in Larimichthys polyactis: Inhibition of growth and impairment of gonadal development.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely distributed endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDCs) in aquatic ecosystems. Larimichthys polyactis is an economically important fish species in China's nearshore waters, characterized by unique sexual differentiation patterns. However, research on the effects of BPA exposure on this species remains limited. This study used 30 days post-hatching (dph) L. polyactis to assess the impact of BPA exposure at three concentrations: 1 μg·L-1, 50 μg·L-1, and 500 μg·L-1, with a control group (WT), over a 60-day immersion period. Survival rate, growth, gonadosomatic index (GSI),

Integration of network toxicology and zebrafish models to elucidate bisphenol BP-induced cardiotoxicity.

Bisphenol BP (BPBP), a structural analog of bisphenol A (BPA), is increasingly utilized in industrial applications; however, its potential hazards to the cardiovascular system remain unexplored. This study employed an integrated strategy combining network toxicology, molecular docking, and in vivo zebrafish models to systematically elucidate the cardiovascular toxicity of BPBP. Network toxicology identified several candidate hub genes and pathways potentially associated with BPBP-induced cardiotoxicity. Molecular docking further suggested favorable predicted interactions between BPBP and selec

Migration of Bisphenol A (BPA) into PET-Bottled Beverages: A Comprehensive Review and Bibliometric Analysis.

The presence of bisphenol A (BPA) in beverages packaged in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has attracted increasing attention due to its endocrine-disrupting effects and the controversy over its origin, since virgin PET does not use BPA as a monomer. This review aimed to analyze evidence on BPA occurrence in PET-packaged beverages, migration from PET itself, associated factors, analytical methodologies, and potential contamination sources. A literature search was conducted in Scopus following PRISMA guidelines, resulting in 60 studies analyzed using Bibliometrix (Biblioshiny), VOSviewer, and
