Red blood cell alloimmunisation after transfusion of red blood cell concentrates carries a risk for every recipient. This risk is particularly high for patients with conditions such as sickle cell disease. However, red blood cell alloimmunisation can also occur after platelet concentrate transfusion. All blood group systems other than ABO are affected, and there are several mechanisms responsible for this alloimmunisation. The practical implications of this are a need to match red blood cell concentrates in all alloimmunised patients and, in pregnant women, recongnition of the risk of developi

OBJECTIVE/AIMS: To identify factors influencing perioperative blood loss and transfusion practice in craniosynostotic corrections.
BACKGROUND: Craniosynostotic corrections are associated with large amounts of blood loss and high transfusion rates.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of all pediatric craniosynostotic corrections during the period from January 2003 to October 2009. The primary endpoint was the receipt of an allogeneic blood transfusion (ABT) during or after surgery. Pre-, intra-, and postoperative data were acquired using the electronic hospital registration system…

Renal allograft survival is prolonged after pretransplantation blood transfusion. The aim of this study was to test retrospectively the development and persistence of microchimaerism after pretransplantation blood transfusion and to assess whether the type of blood transfusion (partially matched [= sharing of at least one HLA-B and one HLA-DR antigen between blood donor and recipient] versus mismatched) influences the (continued) presence of donor-type cells. A sensitive nested PCR technique based on HLA-DRB1 allele-specific amplification using sequence-specific primers (detection level: one d…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The high prevalence of numerous transfusion-transmitted infectious diseases such as HIV, HBV, HCV and syphilis in sub-Saharan Africa affects blood safety for transfusion recipients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and incidence of transfusion-transmissible infectious diseases among blood donors in Burkina Faso.
METHODS: A retrospective study of blood donors' records from January to December 2009 was conducted. Prevalence and incidence of viral infections were calculated among repeat and first-time blood donors.
RESULTS: Of the total of 31405 fir

Background Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a prevalent inherited hemoglobinopathy characterized by chronic hemolytic anemia, vaso-occlusive crises (VOC), and multi-organ complications. Blood transfusion plays a critical role in the management of both acute and chronic complications associated with SCD, including stroke, acute chest syndrome (ACS), and splenic sequestration. However, the variability in transfusion practices and associated risks, such as alloimmunization and iron overload, necessitates further investigation into optimizing transfusion strategies in pediatric SCD patients. Objective…

We evaluated transfusion requirements in a retrospective study of 245 patients with various categories of Dengue infection. The majority (155/245) of our patients were of the Dengue fever (DF) category. There was no correlation between clinical bleed and platelet count as 81 non-bleeding patients were having counts < 20 x 10(3)/microL. Coagulopathy was observed in 37% of the patients with Dengue hemorrhagic fever or Dengue shock syndrome. A rapid response to platelet and fresh frozen plasma (FFP) transfusion was observed in all cases. However, inappropriate transfusion was a major concern as t

Assessing the function of transfused blood components within the dynamic environment of the vascular system remains challenging, as conventional assays are largely static and poorly represent the dynamic mechanical and biochemical interactions between blood cells and the vessel wall. Microfluidic approaches, which study blood flow within small-scale channels, provide an opportunity to bridge this gap by introducing physiologically relevant flow and shear rates into experimental models. This review synthesises the current literature describing the application of microfluidic technologies to the

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Small-volume transfusions of red blood cell (RBC) aliquots are a very common practice across the world; however, there is a lack of data on various strategies of aliquot preparation and their utilization.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive retrospective study, from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022, was conducted at the blood center of a government-owned children's teaching hospital in India. The study aimed to analyze the practices of preparation, utilization, and practice of various number of RBC aliquots prepared.
RESULTS: A total of 222 RBC units were div

INTRODUCTION: Leukocytosis is a condition marked by abnormal increase in leukocyte count due to an inflammatory response as a defense against most of the infections, or bone tumors; including leukemia. The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of blood transfusion in leukocytosis patients with favism as compared to patients treated with antibiotics or combination of both.
METHODS: A total of 97 patients with favism who were referred to the University hospital in 2016-2017 were studied.
KEY FINDINGS: These patients experienced acute hemolysis following beans meal. These patients were eit…

A safe supply of blood and the knowledge, skill, and resources for the appropriate use of blood are essential for medical services. Many problems are faced in the development of transfusion services in low- or medium-income countries (LMICs). Unfortunately, in many countries, providing safe blood is made more difficult by a lack of blood donors and the high frequency of transfusion-transmissible infections. The problems are compounded by the frequent need for urgent life-saving transfusions. This article examines the problems in supply, safety, and use of blood and how they are being addressed

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In this study, we compare variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) cases definitely linked to blood transfusion, those with a history of blood transfusion in which no donor has developed vCJD and primary cases with no history of blood transfusion. The aim is to determine whether there are any differences in the demographics or clinical phenotype in these groups that might suggest additional cases of transfusion transmission of vCJD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All cases of vCJD who are old enough to donate blood (i.e. >17 years old) are notified to the UKBTS at diagnosis…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) increases with age and blood transfusion is frequently given for the management of GIB. In this report, we summarized our data of the patients with GIB and discussed the relationship between blood transfusion and age in patients with GIB.
METHODOLOGY: The patients were divided into two groups according to age, following elderly (≥75 years old) and younger (<75 years old) group. The causes and clinical outcome (blood transfusions, management) of each group were compared.
RESULTS: One-hundred and twenty patients with GIB were ho…
