[Efficacy of percutaneous caffeine in the treatment of apnea in the premature infant].

In 18 prematures (gestational age less than 32 weeks), an aqueous monohydrated caffeine colloidal gel was administered topically. High plasma levels were rapidly obtained with a loading dose divided in 4 applications by massaging, 1 ml of gel per kg body weight, at 12 hour intervals (18 mg caffeine base/kg). Maintenance was then instituted with a dose of 0.5 ml/kg/day. Treatment was initiated before 8 days of life, in children under assisted ventilation but without severe pulmonary involvement, during the period of weaning from the respirator. A good local and general tolerance was invariably

New Therapeutic Strategies for Eating Disorders and Obesity Treatment.

Eating disorders are disabling, deadly, and costly mental disorders that considerably impair physical health and disrupt psychosocial functioning. Disturbed attitudes towards weight, body shape, and eating play a key role in the origin and maintenance of eating disorders. Eating disorders have been increasing over the past 50 years and changes in the food environment have been implicated. All health-care providers should routinely enquire about eating habits as a component of overall health assessment. Six main feeding and eating disorders are now recognised in diagnostic systems: anorexia ner

Changes in Leptin Signaling by SOCS3 Modulate Fasting-Induced Hyperphagia and Weight Regain in Mice.

Weight regain frequently follows interventions that reduce body weight, leading to a failure in long-term obesity treatment. Inhibitory proteins of the leptin signaling pathway, such as the suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3), have been studied in conditions that predispose animals to obesity. However, whether SOCS3 modulates postrestriction hyperphagia and weight regain remains unknown. Mice lacking SOCS3 protein specifically in leptin receptor (LepR)-expressing cells (LepR SOCS3 knockout [KO]) were generated and studied in fasting and refeeding conditions. LepR SOCS3 KO mice exhibited

Cultural attitudes toward weight, diet, and physical activity among overweight African American girls.

INTRODUCTION: The growing epidemic of childhood obesity has led to an increasing focus on strategies for prevention. However, little is known about attitudes and perceptions toward weight, diet, and physical activity among American youth, and particularly among young African American females. This pilot study sought to qualitatively explore cultural attitudes and perceptions toward body image, food, and physical activity among a sample of overweight African American girls. METHODS: We recruited 12 overweight girls, aged 12 to 18 years, from a hospital-based pediatric diabetes screening and pr

Effects of 1 year of exercise training versus combined exercise training and weight loss on body composition, low-grade inflammation and lipids in overweight patients with coronary artery disease: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidaemia and low-grade inflammation are central in atherogenesis and linked to overweight and physical inactivity. Lifestyle changes are important in secondary prevention of coronary artery disease (CAD). We compared the effects of combined weight loss and interval training with interval training alone on physical fitness, body composition, dyslipidaemia and low-grade inflammation in overweight, sedentary participants with CAD. METHODS: Seventy CAD patients, BMI 28-40 kg/m2 and age 45-75 years were randomised to (1) 12 weeks' aerobic interval training (AIT) at 90% of peak hea

Exploring the optimal indicator of short-term peridiagnosis weight dynamics to predict cancer survival: A multicentre cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Body weight and its changes have been associated with cancer outcomes. However, the associations of short-term peridiagnosis weight dynamics in standardized, clinically operational time frames with cancer survival remain largely unknown. This study aimed to screen for and evaluate the optimal indicator of short-term peridiagnosis weight dynamics to predict overall survival (OS) in patients with cancer. METHODS: This multicentre cohort study prospectively collected data from 7460 patients pathologically diagnosed with cancer between 2013 and 2019. Body weight data were recorded 1 m

Introducing TOPMAST, the first double-blind randomized clinical trial specifically dedicated to perioperative maintenance fluid therapy in adults.

BACKGROUND: Although prescribed to every patient undergoing surgery, maintenance fluid therapy is a poorly researched part of perioperative fluid therapy. The tonicity of the chosen solutions, could be an important cause of morbidity, with hyponatremia being a potential side effect of hypotonic solutions, where isotonic solution could lead to fluid overload. METHODS: The TOPMAST-trial is an ongoing prospective single-center double-blind randomized trial comparing an isotonic and a hypotonic maintenance fluid strategy during and after surgery in patients undergoing different types of major tho

Effectiveness of non-surgical weight loss interventions on obstructive sleep apnoea severity and cardiometabolic outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a prevalent disorder closely linked to obesity. While weight loss is a recommended strategy to target its root cause, evidence on the efficacy and sustainability of non-surgical interventions remains unclear. This meta-analysis aimed to systematically evaluate their effects on OSA severity and cardiometabolic outcomes, and to explore sources of heterogeneity. METHODS: This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO: CRD420250641507). We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for t

Can Self-Reported Seasonality Predict Prospectively Assessed Seasonal Changes of Self-Reported Mood, Food Cravings, Body Weight, Insomnia, and Physical Activity?

Controversy about seasonal affective disorder lies in the poor match between its definition and the available screening methods, as well as little knowledge about the predictive value of specific seasonal symptoms assessed by those methods. We examined whether the overall score as well as sub-domains of the seasonal pattern assessment questionnaire can predict seasonal changes in mood, sleep, appetite, weight, and physical activity in a one-year prospective study. In a sample of 336 Icelandic residents, we administered an online questionnaire once in each season, including the seasonal pattern

Association of long-term weight management pharmacotherapy with multiple health outcomes: an umbrella review and evidence map.

BACKGROUND: Multiple meta-analyses (MAs) have demonstrated that six pharmacotherapies, including orlistat, liraglutide, phentermine/topiramate, naltrexone/bupropion, semaglutide, and tirzepatide, improve weight loss and weight maintenance. However, few studies have synthesized and evaluated the quality of this evidence. OBJECTIVE: To identify the relevant MAs of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that explored the association between the six pharmacotherapies and obesity-related health outcomes and adverse events (AEs). METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Coch

Long-term weight changes and risk of rheumatoid arthritis among women in a prospective cohort: a marginal structural model approach.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of long-term weight change with RA risk in a large prospective cohort study. METHODS: The Nurses' Health Study II started in 1989 (baseline); after exclusions, we studied 108 505 women 25-42 years old without RA. Incident RA was reported by participants and confirmed by medical record review. Body weight was reported biennially through 2015. We investigated two time-varying exposures: weight changes from baseline and from age 18; change was divided into five categories. We used a marginal structural model approach to account for time-varying weight change

Physiological, emotional and neural responses to visual stimuli in eating disorders: a review.

BACKGROUND: Overconcern with food and shape/weight stimuli are central to eating disorder maintenance with attentional biases seen towards these images not present in healthy controls. These stimuli trigger changes in the physiological, emotional, and neural responses in people with eating disorders, and are regularly used in research and clinical practice. However, selection of stimuli for these treatments is frequently based on self-reported emotional ratings alone, and whether self-reports reflect objective responses is unknown. MAIN BODY: This review assessed the associations across emoti

Weight Bias Internalization Is Negatively Associated With Weight-Related Quality of Life in Persons Seeking Weight Loss.

Research has shown a negative relationship between weight bias internalization (WBI) and general measures of health-related quality of life (QOL), such as the Short Form-36. Less is known about the impact of WBI on weight-specific domains of QOL. This study examined the relationship between WBI and weight-related QOL, as measured by the Impact of Weight on Quality of Life (IWQOL-Lite) scale. Participants were 178 adults with obesity [71.3% black, 87.6% female, mean body mass index (BMI) = 40.9 ± 5.9 kg/m2] enrolled in a weight loss trial testing the effects of lorcaserin on weight loss mainten

Liraglutide for Weight Management in the Real World: Significant Weight Loss Even if the Maximal Daily Dose Is Not Achieved.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a global health challenge, and pharmacologic options are emerging. Once daily subcutaneous administration of 3 mg liraglutide, a glucagon like peptide-1 analogue, has been shown to induce weight loss in clinical trials, but real-world effectiveness data are scarce. METHODS: It is a single-centre retrospective cohort study of patients who were prescribed liraglutide on top of lifestyle adaptations after multidisciplinary evaluation. In Belgium, liraglutide is only indicated for weight management if the BMI is >30 kg/m2 or ≥27 kg/m2 with comorbidities such as dysglycaem

Comparison of different weight-based scalars of remimazolam for anesthesia induction in patients with obesity: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Patients with obesity pose unique anesthetic challenges. Remimazolam, a short-acting benzodiazepine, is useful for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia, and its pharmacokinetic profile renders it a valuable alternative to traditional anesthetic agents in this population. We aimed to compare its induction doses based on total body weight (TBW) vs lean body weight (LBW) in patients with obesity. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, single-centre, randomized controlled trial between February 2022 and June 2023 at the Eye and Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Hospital of Fudan Unive
