OBJECT: Children 0-3 years old present a completely different neurotraumatic pathology. The growing and the development processes in this age group imply specific anatomical and pathophysiological features of the skull, subarachnoid space, CSF flow, and brain. Most common specific neurotraumatic entities in children 0-3 years old are cephalhematoma, subaponeurotic (subgaleal) hematoma, diastatic skull fracture, grow skull fracture, depressed ('ping-pong') skull fracture, and extradural hematoma.
METHODS: We present our 10 years experience in neuropediatric traumatic brain injuries, between 19

The aim of this study is to assess the effects of alcohol on traumatic brain injury by using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and evaluate aquaporin-4(AQP4) expression changes in rat brainstems following acute alcohol intoxication with diffuse axonal injury (DAI). We further investigated the correlation between the AQP4 expression and DTI in the brain edema. Eighty-five rats were imaged before and after injury at various stages. DTI was used to measure brainstem apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA), with immunostaining being used to determine AQP4 expression. After

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) contributes to a significant portion of the injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes, falls, and sports collisions. The development of advanced countermeasures to mitigate these injuries requires a complete understanding of the tolerance of the human brain to injury. In this study, we developed a new method to establish human injury tolerance levels using an integrated database of reconstructed football impacts, subinjurious human volunteer data, and nonhuman primate data. The human tolerance levels were analyzed using tissue-level metrics determined using har

The neurosurgical management of traumatic brain injury (TBI) plays a critical role in ensuring acute survival and mitigating secondary brain damage, which significantly impacts patients' quality of life. TBI is defined as an external force impacting the skull, leading to brain injuries and subsequent functional impairments. It is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity, particularly among young individuals. The initial clinical examination is crucial, with external signs like scalp injuries, hematomas, nasal fluid leakage, skull deformities, and neurological deficits providing important clu

Thrombomodulin (TM), which is located in the surface of the endothelium in the arteries, veins, and capillaries of major organs such as the brain, lungs, liver, kidneys, skeletal muscles, and gastrointestinal tract, is one of several indicators of endothelial injury. Von Willebrand factor (vWf), which is synthesized by endothelial cells, is also an endothelial specific glycoprotein. The serum level of vWf increases in response to various stimuli without endothelial injury. An elevated serum level of vWf may suggest endothelial activation in severe head injury. We hypothesize that the degree of

Athletes in collision sports frequently sustain repetitive head impacts (RHI), which, while not individually severe enough for a clinical mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) diagnosis, can compromise neuronal organization by transferring mechanical energy to the brain. Although numerous studies target athletes with mTBI, there is a lack of longitudinal research on young collision sport participants, highlighting an unaddressed concern regarding cumulative RHI effects on brain microstructures. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the microstructural changes in the brains' of high school ru

BACKGROUND: Significant elevations of serum sialic acid level have been documented in various diseases including in a variety of central nervous system disorders. But, in head injury, there is no any study on the serum and brain tissue sialic acid levels. So, we planned an experimental study to evaluate serum and brain tissue sialic acid levels in head injury.
METHODS: Marmarou's impact-acceleration model was used in rats to produce diffuse brain injury. Rats were divided into equal three groups. In Group I, 450 g weight was fell from 1 m height to heads of subjects, and from 2 m in Group II.

Diffuse brain injury is better described as multi-focal, where pathology can be found adjacent to seemingly uninjured neural tissue. In experimental diffuse brain injury, pathology and pathophysiology have been reported far more lateral than predicted by the impact site. We hypothesized that local thickening of the rodent skull at the temporal ridges serves to focus the intracranial mechanical forces experienced during brain injury and generate predictable pathology. We demonstrated local thickening of the skull at the temporal ridges using contour analysis on magnetic resonance imaging. After

Cognitive dysfunction is a devastating consequence of traumatic brain injury that affects the majority of those who survive with moderate-to-severe injury, and many patients with mild head injury. Disruption of key monoaminergic neurotransmitter systems, such as the dopaminergic system, may play a key role in the widespread cognitive dysfunction seen after traumatic axonal injury. Manifestations of injury to this system may include impaired decision-making and impulsivity. We used the Cambridge Gambling Task to characterize decision-making and risk-taking behaviour, outside of a learning conte

While recent evidence suggests that brain intracellular free magnesium concentration declines following severe diffuse traumatic brain injury, no studies have examined whether magnesium administration following such injury can improve subsequent neurologic outcome. The present study shows that MgSO4 administered as a bolus at 30 min following severe closed head injury in rats significantly improves posttraumatic neurologic outcome as assessed by both rotarod and angleboard tests. Moreover, this improvement in outcome was evident with both intravenous and intramuscular drug administration. We c

The primary objective of this review is to examine the methodology and evidence for neuroplasticity operating in recovery from traumatic brain injury (TBI), as compared with previous findings in patients sustaining perinatal and infantile focal vascular lesions. The evidence to date indicates that the traditional view of enhanced reorganization of function after early focal brain lesions might apply to early focal brain lesions, but does not conform with studies of early severe diffuse brain injury. In contrast to early focal vascular lesions, young age confers no advantage in the outcome of s

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), the principal form of brain injury in the premature infant, is characterized by overt focal necrotic lesions in periventricular white matter and less prominent, more diffuse cerebral white matter injury. The early detection of the latter, diffuse component of PVL is not consistently possible with conventional brain imaging techniques. We demonstrate the early detection of the diffuse component of PVL by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI). In a premature infant with no definite cerebral abnormality detectable by cranial ultrasonography or con

The shaken baby syndrome (SBS) or shaking trauma describes the occurrence of subdural hematoma, retinal hemorrhage and diffuse injury to the brain by vigorous shaking of an infant that has a poor prognosis. Rapid cranial acceleration and deceleration leads to tearing of bridging veins, retinal hemorrhages and diffuse brain injuries. In addition to clinical symptoms, such as irritability, feeding difficulties, somnolence, apathy, seizures, apnea and temperature regulation disorders, vomiting also occurs due to increased intracranial pressure. Milder forms of SBS often go undiagnosed and the num

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is now recognized as an insult triggering a dynamic process of degeneration and regeneration potentially evolving for years with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) as one major complication. Neurons are at the center of the clinical manifestations, both in the acute and chronic phases. Yet, in the acute phase, conventional neuropathology detects abnormalities predominantly in the axons, if one excludes contusions and hypoxic ischemic changes. We report the finding of ballooned neurons, predominantly in the anterior cingulum, in three patients who sustained seve

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mentalization or theory of mind as an aspect of our social cognition, is our ability to infer mental states of others (intentions, desires, thoughts, emotions) and to predict their behavior accordingly. This function significantly affects our participation and orientation in the social world and plays an important role in conversational situations, social interactions, social integ-ration and adaptation. The brain regions that serve as the basis for mind-reading function can be damaged as a consequence of traumatic brain injury, which frequently occurs among the younger

There is substantial interest in the potential for traumatic brain injury to result in progressive neurological deterioration. While blood biomarkers such as glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) and neurofilament light have been widely explored in characterizing acute traumatic brain injury (TBI), their use in the chronic phase is limited. Given increasing evidence that these proteins may be markers of ongoing neurodegeneration in a range of diseases, we examined their relationship to imaging changes and functional outcome in the months to years following TBI. Two-hundred and three patients we

Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) is a subtype of traumatic brain injury that causes acute-phase consciousness disorders and widespread chronic-phase brain atrophy. Considering the importance of brainstem damage in DAI, a valid method for evaluating brainstem volume is required. We obtained volume measurements from 182 healthy adults by analyzing T1-weighted magnetic resonance images, and created an age-/sex-/intracranial volume-based quantitative model to estimate the normal healthy volume of the brainstem and cerebrum. We then applied this model to the volume measurements of 22 DAI patients, most

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) present a major public health challenge, demanding an in-depth understanding of age-specific symptoms and risk factors. Aging not only significantly influences brain function and plasticity but also elevates the risk of hospitalizations and death following TBIs. Repetitive mild TBIs (rmTBI) compound these issues, resulting in cumulative and long-term brain damage in the brain. In this study, we investigate the impact of age on brain network changes and white matter properties following rmTBI by employing a multi-modal approach that integrates resting-state functi

The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities in the acute phase of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the association with brain injury severity and outcome. In contrast to neurovascular diseases, sparse information is available on this issue. Data of adult patients with severe TBI admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for intracranial pressure monitoring of a level-1 trauma center from 2002 till 2018 were analyzed. Patients with a cardiac history were excluded. An ECG recording was obtained within 24 h after ICU admission. Admission
