Neurotransmitter-mediated gut-brain axis: a bibliometric analysis of research trends and knowledge structure.

INTRODUCTION: The gut-brain axis constitutes a bidirectional network linking the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system through neural, endocrine, metabolic, and immune pathways. Neurotransmitters play a central role in mediating this crosstalk, serving as intermediates through which the gut microbiota influences brain function. Although important mechanistic advances have been made, research on the neurotransmitter-mediated gut-brain axis remains fragmented across disciplines. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive bibliometric overview of this field. METHODS: We conducted a

The Copper-Gut-Brain Axis: A Triple Inflammatory Pathway Driving Neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's Disease.

Serum copper increases progressively with normal aging, yet its downstream consequences for the gut microbiome and neuroinflammation remain unexplored. Gut microbiota dysbiosis and elevated lipopolysaccharide levels are established features of Alzheimer's disease, and growing evidence indicates that this dysbiosis drives neuroinflammatory disease progression. Yet the upstream trigger initiating this dysbiosis remains unknown. We propose that age-related copper dyshomeostasis serves as this missing trigger. The redox-active copper content of ceruloplasmin increases across the adult lifespan, an

The maternal gut-fetal brain axis: role of maternal microbial metabolome in early neurodevelopment.

Fetal neurodevelopment is a critical phase modulated by the maternal microbiome. While certain specific signaling pathways have been identified, the complete signaling network and the spatial and temporal complexity remain largely unknown. Maternal metabolites are essential for fetal growth and certain metabolites are subject to dynamic adaptation during pregnancy. Alteration of maternal microbe richness and diversity, caused by malnutrition, psycho-social distress, and or infection, are cues known to impair fetal neural developmental circuits concomitant with increased risk of cognitive dysfu

Engineered E. coli Nissle 1917 alleviates colitis-associated depression via gut-brain axis restoration.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients disproportionately suffer from depression and anxiety, which exacerbate clinical outcomes yet remain inadequately addressed by current anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) biologics. To bridge this therapeutic gap, we engineered Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (eEcN) as a clinically translatable living microbial therapeutics platform for dual-targeted intervention. eEcN is designed to autonomously secrete immunomodulatory outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) bearing TNFα-neutralizing nanobodies (TNFαnb). These bioengineered nanovesicles specifically target inflamed

Nardosinone improves levodopa-induced dyskinesia in Parkinsonian rats through the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID) is a side effect of Parkinson's disease (PD) treated with L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA). Nardosinone is the major active component of the dried root and rhizome of Nardostachys jatamansi DC, which is effective for treating PD. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of nardosinone on LID and the underlying mechanism involving the microbiota-gut-brain axis. A PD rat model was established with rotenone. Behavioral and immunohistochemical staining experiments were used to investigate the synergistic effect of nardosinone on L-DOPA in PD rats.

Postbiotics in Functional Foods: Preparation-Based Characterization, Gut-Brain Axis Interactions, and Translational Perspectives.

Postbiotics are defined as preparations of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confer a health benefit on the host. Although interest in postbiotics has increased substantially, their translational use in functional foods remains insufficiently characterized with respect to preparation identity, production methodology, food-matrix compatibility, mechanistic specificity, and regulatory positioning. This PRISMA-guided structured review aims to synthesize current evidence on postbiotics in functional food and nutraceutical contexts, with particular emphasis on preparation-based

Dietary sulforaphane glucosinolate alleviates stress-induced depression and demyelination through gut-brain axis modulation.

Chronic stress is a major risk factor for depression and white matter injury, yet effective preventive strategies remain limited. Here, we investigated whether an 8-week diet supplemented with 0.1% sulforaphane glucosinolate (SGS) could prevent depression-like behaviors and corpus callosum (CC) demyelination in C57BL/6 mice exposed to 14 d of chronic restraint stress (CRS). SGS pre-treatment significantly reduced immobility in the forced swim test and showed a trend toward preserving sucrose preference compared with stressed controls. Consistently, Black-Gold II staining and myelin basic prote

The gut-brain axis in avian appetite regulation: Integrating peripheral signals with central neurocircuitry.

The precise regulation of energy homeostasis is essential for sustainable poultry production. Dysregulation of the avian gut-brain axis (GBA) contributes to metabolic disorders such as ascites and sudden death syndrome, impaired feed efficiency, and welfare problems in high-yield broilers. The avian GBA is a specialized bidirectional network that integrates hormonal, neural, and microbial signals to match feeding behavior with acute nutrient availability and long-term metabolic demands. Unique avian traits include a simplified gustatory system, lack of a functional T1R2 sweet receptor, a diver

Gut-Brain Axis-mediated Neurological Manifestations in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Mechanisms and Disease Spectrum.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic immune-mediated disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that is frequently associated with neuropsychiatric comorbidities, such as anxiety, depression, and other neurological disorders. Accumulating evidence suggests that these neuropsychiatric disorders are secondary conditions caused by impaired gut-brain communication. The gut-brain axis connects the gut and the brain via neural, endocrine, and immune signaling pathways, disruption of which is usually caused by intestinal microbiota imbalance, intestinal barrier damage, neuroinflammation and immu

The brain-gut axis in autism spectrum disorder: from gastrointestinal dysfunction to neuroimmune mechanisms.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social deficits and repetitive behaviors, often accompanied by gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Emerging evidence highlights the gut-brain axis as a key pathway linking GI dysfunction to ASD pathophysiology. This review synthesizes current findings on the interplay among dietary patterns, gut microbiota dysbiosis, intestinal barrier dysfunction, and neuroimmune activation in ASD. We also discuss shared genetic vulnerabilities and environmental factors influencing

The microbiota-gut-brain axis in epilepsy: Mechanistic insights and emerging probiotic-based therapeutics.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder affecting more than 50 million people globally. Over one-third of patients remain pharmacoresistant to conventional antiepileptic therapy, creating a substantial healthcare and societal burden. Recently, the gut-brain axis has emerged as a novel and pivotal route in the pathophysiology and progression of epilepsy. The gut microbiota regulates brain function by influencing immune responses, neurotransmitter levels, and the integrity of the gut-brain barrier. Studies increasingly show that epilepsy is linked to gut dysbiosis, reflected by reduced abund

Psychological stress and immune dysregulation: Insights from neuroimmunology and the gut-brain-immune axis.

The interplay between mental health, immune function, and gut microbiota has garnered increasing attention in recent years, with mounting evidence indicating that psychological stress and depression are increasingly associated with alterations in immune responses and systemic health. Chronic stress and depression are closely associated with immune dysregulation and have been implicated in the onset and progression of autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disorders, cancer, and other inflammation-related conditions, although these relationships are complex and not strictly causal. Critical Role of Calcitonin Gene-related Peptide (CGRP) in the Microbiome-gut-brain Axis.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a neuropeptide with α and β isoforms, is a pivotal regulator connecting the neural, immune, and gastrointestinal systems. This comprehensive analysis delineates the evidence-based mechanistic roles of CGRP within the microbiome-gut-brain axis, focusing on its bidirectional modulation of enteric and central nervous system pathways. Both α- and β-CGRP are widely expressed in sensory and enteric neurons, where they govern vasodilation, intestinal motility, secretion, and mucosal homeostasis. CGRP-mediated signaling integrates gut microbiota-derived cues wit

Pharmacological interventions targeting the gut-brain axis in neurological disorders: mechanisms and translational applications.

The microbiota-gut-brain axis represents a complex bidirectional communication network linking the gastrointestinal system and the central nervous system and has been increasingly recognized as a key contributor to neurological and psychiatric disorders. Growing evidence indicates that alterations in gut microbiota composition and function can influence brain development and function through neural, immune, endocrine, and metabolic pathways, thereby modulating neuroinflammation, neurotransmission, and blood-brain barrier integrity. Dysregulation of this axis has been implicated in a range of c

Translational Perspectives on Anti-Inflammatory Interventions for Neurodegenerative Disorders: Evidence from Gut-Brain Axis.

The Gut-Brain Axis (GBA) has a complex role in chronic neuroinflammation, which is increasingly connected to neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's Disease (PD), and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Through neuronal, endocrine, and immunological pathways, the GBA enables twoway communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. According to recent research, the pathophysiology of neuroinflammatory responses in NDDs may be significantly influenced by gut dysbiosis, increased intestinal permeability, and modified microbial metabolite

Alginate-gelatin hydrogel scaffolds for establishing physiological barriers on a gut-brain-axis microchip.

Organ-on-chips (OOCs) technique has transferred real animal models to the in vitro models, especially for the exploration of the gut-brain-axis. In this work, we proposed a novel hydrogel-based microchip system to simulate two of the most indispensable physiological barriers in the gut-brain-axis, providing a feasible tool for studying the bacteria-induced regulations of tryptophan metabolism on cells. Using UV-light-induced hydrogel of alginate-gelatin mixture filled within the microchip as the cell scaffold, different cell layers were successfully inoculated and formed an intestinal barrier

The Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis in Depression: Mechanisms, Microbiota-Targeted Interventions, and Translational Challenges.

Depression, a global mental health pandemic, persists with unmet therapeutic needs due to the limitations of conventional antidepressants. Emerging evidence suggests that the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGB axis) is a crucial regulator of depressive pathophysiology, facilitating bidirectional communication between the gut microbiota and the central nervous system (CNS) through neural, immune, endocrine, and metabolic pathways. This review explores the complex mechanisms underlying MGB dysfunction in depression, including vagus nerve-mediated signaling, cytokine-driven neuroinflammation, and hyp
